Sonali Bendre in 'The Broken News', an adaptation of British show 'Press'. After a long hiatus from movies and fictional shows, actress Sonali Bendre has made her OTT debut with The Broken News , released June 10, 2022, on Zee5. The Hindi adaptation of British TV series Press also stars Jaideep Ahlawat and Shriya Pilgaonkar in leading roles along with Bendre, who plays a journalist in the show. Edited excerpts from a conversation with Bendre: Your last acting stint in a fiction project was the television series 'Ajeeb Daastaan Hai Ye' in 2014, and a year before that, it was a cameo in the movie 'Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara'. What kept you away? I had always maintained that once I have my baby, I will not do fiction for the initial 7-8 years as I did not want to travel. I did reality TV because it was the closest to being in office in terms of timing and working around my son’s schedule. Then I did Ajeeb Daastaan … which was a fabulous subject but the story … [Read more...] about Sonali Bendre on ‘The Broken News’: “It’s a relevant story and my character has a voice”

How Piolo Pascual and Lovi Poe ‘Filipinized’ K-drama series ‘Flower of Evil’
Scene from “Flower of Evil” Piolo Pascual and Lovi Poe, stars of the local adaptation of the South Korean series “Flower of Evil,” see nothing wrong with remaking old concepts as opposed to creating original ones. “I completely understand why some people say we should focus on creating our own stuff, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong or I don’t think it’s bad to acknowledge other people’s works, especially if it’s something this beautiful,” Lovi told Inquirer Entertainment in a recent media junket. “A lot of countries are doing it, and so have we, for many years now. Of course, you always want to do something original, but the bottom line here is that if we would be able to give the old concept a new and different take, then I think it’s still worth doing,” added Piolo, who swore that the series will be appreciated even by non-KDrama fans. “We Filipinized it, so it’s not KDrama at all. It’s made in such a way that even people who prefer stuff other than KDrama will fall … [Read more...] about How Piolo Pascual and Lovi Poe ‘Filipinized’ K-drama series ‘Flower of Evil’
Five Creative Ways Airlines Are Addressing The Pilot Shortage
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Is there a pilot shortage, or not? Depending on who you ask, you can get different answers . Flights are getting cancelled due to a lack of pilots, and small cities are losing service as a result. Over time this problem will correct itself with changes in pay, new training, and perhaps regulatory reform. None of these solutions will fix this summer, however. With strong demand for air travel both domestically and internationally, the airline industry has a challenge to make this summer work. To address this near-term challenge, airlines have started to adopt some creative tactics. Not all of these may work, but they get to the heart of the matter - finding more pilots quickly. Here are some of the best ideas that are being tried: Use Higher Pay As An Incentive Incentives work, and often monetary incentives work the best. In order to keep pilots flying and maybe not jumping to a bigger airline, some airlines are offer … [Read more...] about Five Creative Ways Airlines Are Addressing The Pilot Shortage
The ultimate guide to purposeful productivity (your mental health will thank you)
Have you ever looked at another person’s daily accomplishments and thought, “How do they do it”? By the time most are pouring a second cup of coffee in the morning, some super-achievers have gone for a 5-mile run, hit inbox zero, and nailed the rough draft of that report due next week. Oh, and they figured out the day’s Wordle, too. advertisement advertisement After more than a decade of writing and practicing productivity techniques, I’ve learned that these folks generally do know more about how to get more done. And you can adopt those practices, too. But, why would you? Getting more done in less time can mean that you have more free time to do the things you love with the people you love. Or, it can create space to fill with more work that could have a detrimental effect on your mental and physical health. I learned this the hard way last year. advertisement advertisement Don’t make the same mistakes. Instead, practice … [Read more...] about The ultimate guide to purposeful productivity (your mental health will thank you)
Chinese firms are dominating key parts of Hong Kong’s economy
- A + A (June 28): Half way to the point when Hong Kong will officially be enveloped by China, Beijing is not just calling the shots politically, but in vast swathes of the city’s US$344 billion economy. From the stock exchange to brokerages, construction projects to the retail sector, Chinese state-controlled firms are increasingly dominating, taking market share away from the local tycoons and British trading houses that thrived under the final decades of UK rule. Those behind the growing Chinese influence view Hong Kong’s economy as stagnant, slow to embrace the technology-driven, new economy industries that have been catalysts for growth on the mainland. Chinese enterprises have been handed more political power in the city, including a recent revamp of the electoral system that reduced the influence of local businesspeople and added greater representation for state-backed companies. “Hong Kong has come to a crucial crossroads,” said Simon Lee, a Hong Kong … [Read more...] about Chinese firms are dominating key parts of Hong Kong’s economy
The Broken News review: The news is dead, long live the news
Sonali Bendre as Amina Qureshi and Shriya Pilgaonkar as Radha Bhargava in 'The Broken News'. (Image: Screen grab) “Deals” and “ideals”; fiction and truth; TRP and integrity— The Broken News , the new eight-episode series on Zee5, revolves around dualities and contrasts. Set in Mumbai in post-Covid times, but harking back to an era in television journalism when the media-corporate-politics triad was the only impediment to unbiased news reporting—as opposed to the fakery, non-truth and propaganda that informs the satellites now— The Broken News , directed by Vinay Waikul (who also directed Netflix’s Aranyak ) and written and adapted from the original British series Press by Sambit Mishra, is one of the most convincing media dramas to have come out of the Indian OTT universe in recent times. The polarities are established from the word go. Dipankar Sanyal (Jaideep Ahlawat) is the monarch of Josh 24x7. His prime time slot is a one-man show—the entire newsroom is a … [Read more...] about The Broken News review: The news is dead, long live the news

Gun Law Changes Will Impact Legal Advisors
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Legal advisors will need to come up to speed on the new gun law changes. I hope that this helps. On Tuesday, June 21, the Senate advanced a gun safety bill, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, with a vote of 64-34. Just days later, the Supreme Court announced its decision in New York Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, where the court struck down New York’s law requiring applicants for a concealed handgun license show “proper cause” before receiving their permit. Here’s what the proposed bill seeks to accomplish : 1. Close the boyfriend loophole. Currently, federal law prevents those who have been convicted of domestic abuse against a partner they are married to, living with or share children with from purchasing a gun —but does not apply to those convicted of abuse against a person they are merely dating or have no romantic relationship with. The updated text would define “misdemeanor crime of domestic … [Read more...] about Gun Law Changes Will Impact Legal Advisors

Great organisations and leaders actively look for data on their errors, so they can drive improvements. This flips the dynamic from ‘closed and defensive’ to ‘open and adaptive’. (Representational image: The Blowup via Unsplash) In a knowledge-rich world, progress does not lie in the direction of reading information faster, writing it faster, and storing more of it. Progress lies in the direction of extracting and exploiting the patterns of the world… And that progress will depend on … our ability to devise better and more powerful thinking programs for man and machine. - Herbert Simon, ‘Designing Organizations for an Information-rich World’, 1969. One of the best accounts of the Middle Eastern part of the Silk Road is that by Ruy Gonzalez de Clavijo (d. 1412), who was sent as ambassador to Tamerlane by King Henry III of Castile and Leon in Spain.
