Kirkland Crawford Detroit Free Press Published 1:38 PM EST Feb 18, 2019 ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. published his second mock draft on Monday because ... well, why not? Detroit Lions fans and observers may be more intrigued with Kiper's prediction for the eighth overall pick in April's draft. A month ago, Kiper had the Lions taking LSU linebacker Devin White. Now? Say hello to Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson. "Hockenson (6-5, 250) is a complete player who can run routes out of the slot on one play, then line up next to a tackle and blow up an edge defender in the running game on the next," Kiper wrote. "I'm not going to call him a Rob Gronkowski clone, but there are similarities, particularly when you see each as blockers." For what it's worth, Free Press sports writer Dave Birkett highlighted Hockenson as someone to watch for the Lions ... in the second round. Lions mailbag: Here's who I'd pick at No. 8 in NFL draft Hockenson, who entered the draft … [Read more...] about NFL mock draft: Detroit Lions take TE in first round?

Justin Rogers The Detroit News Published 10:59 AM EST Feb 7, 2019 Among the Detroit Lions' many needs this offseason is finding a more reliable playmaker opposite Darius Slay in the secondary. In his latest mock draft, ESPN's Todd McShay has the Lions plugging that hole with the No. 8 pick, slotting LSU's Greedy Williams to Detroit. "Detroit needs an edge rusher with Ezekiel Ansah likely headed out of town, and the Lions would love to add a solid tight end, but Williams is the best need-value match at No. 8," McShay writes. "The Lions tied for second-fewest interceptions in the league with seven, and the tall LSU corner has the closing speed to bait quarterbacks and then pounce on their mistakes. Motor City hasn't gone cornerback in the first round since Terry Fair in 1998." Last season, the Lions cycled through four options opposite Slay: Nevin Lawson, DeShawn Shead, Teez Tabor and undrafted rookie Mike Ford. Lawson saw the field the most from … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions select LSU’s Greedy Williams in Todd McShay’s mock draft
Justin Rogers The Detroit News Published 11:15 AM EST Jan 17, 2019 With the Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator search wrapped up, it's time to shift focus to the roster-building components of the offseason, namely free agency and the draft. Thankfully, Mel Kiper is happy to help. The longtime ESPN analyst released his first mock draft Thursday morning, and in it he has the Lions selecting LSU linebacker Devin White. "This is a spot to watch for a pass-rusher, as the Lions could part ways with free agent Ezekiel Ansah," Kiper writes. "In fact, coach Matt Patricia could use improvements at every level of his defense. White is a fly-to-the-football linebacker with similar athletic traits as Detroit middle linebacker Jarrad Davis, who was taken in the first round in 2017. The two could form a stellar tandem, as both are three-down linebackers. White isn't a true pass-rusher, but he makes plays in the backfield." That blurb isn't likely to inspire … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions take linebacker Devin White in Mel Kiper’s mock draft
The Detroit News Published 10:33 AM EST Jan 16, 2019 Rashan Gary, Detroit Lions defensive end? That’s a likely scenario described by Nate Davis of USA Today, who has Gary, the former Michigan star, going to the Lions with the No. 8 pick in Davis’ mock draft, published Wednesday. “Detroit didn't get much on passing downs from its D-line, and it won't help losing free agent Ziggy Ansah, as unreliable as he could be,” Davis says. “Gary could not only solidify a deficiency, he has the versatility to move around, a trait Matt Patricia would value given his affinity for employing multiple fronts.” Gary (6-5, 283) left Michigan with one year of college eligibility remaining, to enter the NFL draft. He finished his Michigan career with 136 tackles (23.5 TFL) and 10.5 sacks in 35 games. Kentucky linebacker Josh Allen, considered a possible landing spot for the Lions at No. 8, goes to the Bills at No. 9 in Davis’ projections. Interestingly, … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions go for Michigan Wolverines’ Rashan Gary in mock draft
