Like many of his neighbors and fellow business owners, Babajide Alao first saw the news while scrolling social media on May 10: A popular stretch of Rockaway Beach would close to the public this summer as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation continue the federally funded, multiyear, $336 million Atlantic Shorefront Resiliency Project . Through the building and restoration of stone groins (similar to rock jetties) in the ocean, the plan is to prevent further sand erosion linked to the climate change-induced rise in sea level. The announcement, which came less than three weeks before Memorial Day--the start of peak season in the tourism-dependent corridor--rocked local morale, especially among business owners, who had hoped for a return to normalcy after two years amid the pandemic. Many area entrepreneurs, who say that city parks officials led them to believe beaches would stay open during construction, now fear that this … [Read more...] about What Happened When Rockaway’s Residents Heard the Beach Would Be Closed This Summer? Malaysia is drowning in uneaten food – 6 steps you can take to help stop food waste
I must admit that I hesitated before putting pen to paper this month, because so much has been written and said about food waste – in this newspaper, in other media, by advocacy groups and others – that I wondered whether there is anything I can usefully say. But food waste is a really serious element of the planetary health crisis and one of the issues that we have the most power to change by our individual behaviours. So let me start with some often-quoted facts and figures: Globally, somewhere around 40% of food that is produced for us is never eaten. It is simply thrown away. On average, Malaysian households throw away around 25% of the food we buy in supermarkets. So with the average family spending around RM900 on food each month, that means around RM225 goes in the bin, and more often than not to a landfill. When you add other forms of food waste such as that produced by restaurants, supermarkets and other sectors, out of the 38,000 tonnes of trash we throw away every … [Read more...] about Malaysia is drowning in uneaten food – 6 steps you can take to help stop food waste

Experts: Under-reporting of long Covid endangers patients’ recovery, healthcare system
KUALA LUMPUR: First, Larissa Lumandan left her mobile phone in the freezer. Next, she could not remember what items she needed to bring when moving to Kuala Lumpur from Sabah or even how to arrange them in her luggage. "It took me three days to pack a simple suitcase. It was, like, as though I didn’t know how to pack things. It’s never happened to me before, never,” the 32-year-old writer told Bernama. It did not stop there. The Kota Kinabalu native said after moving to Kuala Lumpur last month, she would regularly do silly things like trying to find clothes she had chosen to wear while holding the said clothes, and rewashing dishes over and over again because she kept forgetting she had washed them. It was only when she ended up in Avenue K, while trying to get to the Suria KLCC shopping mall via the connecting tunnel - a place she used to go to often as a student in Kuala Lumpur - that she realised something was wrong. She described her mind as being "very blur”. In medical … [Read more...] about Experts: Under-reporting of long Covid endangers patients’ recovery, healthcare system
Geetanjali Shree wins International Booker Prize for first Hindi novel ‘Tomb of Sand’
Author Geetanjali Shree's Hindi novel Tomb of Sand' has become the first book in any Indian language to win the prestigious International Booker Prize. At a ceremony in London on Thursday, the New Delhi-based writer said she was completely overwhelmed with the "bolt from the blue" as she accepted her prize, worth GBP 50,000 and shared with the book's English translator, Daisy Rockwell. Tomb of Sand', originally Ret Samadhi', is set in northern India and follows an 80-year-old woman in a tale the Booker judges dubbed a joyous cacophony and an "irresistible novel". I never dreamt of the Booker, I never thought I could. What a huge recognition, I'm amazed, delighted, honoured and humbled, said Shree, in her acceptance speech. There is a melancholy satisfaction in the award going to it. Ret Samadhi/Tomb of Sand' is an elegy for the world we inhabit, a lasting energy that retains hope in the face of impending doom. The Booker will surely take it to many more people than it would … [Read more...] about Geetanjali Shree wins International Booker Prize for first Hindi novel ‘Tomb of Sand’
