Air pollution likely contributed to nearly six million premature births and almost three million underweight babies around the world in 2019, according to a study published on Wednesday. Researchers at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and University of Washington in the US quantified the effects of indoor and outdoor pollution around the world using data from 204 countries. The finding, published in the journal PLOS Medicine, is the most in-depth look yet at how small particulate matter (PM2.5) affects several key indicators of pregnancy, including gestational age at birth, reduction in birth weight, low birth weight, and preterm birth. It is the first global burden of disease study of these indicators to include the effects of indoor air pollution, mostly from cook stoves, which accounted for two-thirds of the measured effects, the researchers said. Total assets under custody of Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) increased by 3.4 percent owing to the strong macroeconomic fundamentals of the Indian economy and improvement in market risk appetite from time to time, according to the Economic Survey 2022-23 released by the Finance Ministry on January 31. Despite the uncertain macro environment considering the inflation and geopolitical concerns, the total assets under custody of FPIs increased to Rs 54.0 lakh crore at the end of November 2022 as compared to Rs 52.2 lakh crore at the end of November 2021. As per the C40 report, the current proposed coal expansion by 64 GW around Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Chennai could cause 52,700 premature deaths, 31,300 preterm births, and 5,700 new asthma cases among children, over just a decade. India is the second-largest coal user in the world, with 55 percent of the country’s coal-generated electricity coming from areas within 500 km of these five megacities.
