Midterms’ biggest abortion battleground: Pennsylvania

May 8, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Pro-abortion protests erupted in several parts of the US in first week of May (Image: AP) Jan Downey, who calls herself “a Catholic Republican,” is so unhappy about the Supreme Court’s likely reversal of abortion rights that she is leaning toward voting for a Democrat for Pennsylvania governor this year. “Absolutely,” she said. “On that issue alone.” Linda Ward, also a Republican, said the state’s current law allowing abortion up to 24 weeks was “reasonable.” But Ward said she would vote for a Republican for governor, even though all the leading candidates vowed to sign legislation sharply restricting abortion. She is disgusted with inflation, mask mandates and “woke philosophy,” she said. “After what’s happened this past year, I will never vote for a Democrat,” said Ward, a retired church employee. “Never!” Close Pennsylvania, one of a handful of states where abortion access hangs in the balance with midterm elections this year, is a test case of the … [Read more...] about Midterms’ biggest abortion battleground: Pennsylvania

May 23, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

(CNN) Five times stronger than steel , spider silk's unique qualities were recognized by the Ancient Greeks — and more recently, scientists have looked at applications from medicine to engineering. Now, one Japanese startup, Spiber , is exploring how spider webs could transform the textile industry. The biotech company started by making a spider silk replica in the lab and has since spun out its fabric range to include more sustainable alternatives to wool, cashmere and denim, says Kenji Higashi, head of business development at Spiber. The company's trademarked fiber, Brewed Protein, has been used in limited edition collections with brands including Japanese streetwear label Sacai and outdoor apparel specialists The North Face Japan. Currently scaling up production and getting ready for a full commercial launch of its textiles, Spiber hopes its technology will help to "solve some of the big global challenges that we're facing," says Higashi. … [Read more...] about Inspired by spiders, one Japanese startup is inventing a new generation of textiles

SEA Games: Gilas Pilipinas’ reign ends as Indonesia gets basketball gold

May 22, 2022 by sports.inquirer.net

June Mar Fajardo swarmed by Indonesian defenders in their 31st SEA Games match up. SEA GAMES POOL Playing a retooled enemy eager to assert its might in the region, the Philippines bowed to sweet-shooting Indonesia, 85-81, in the 31st Southeast Asian Games on Sunday, ending a golden rule that had spanned 33 years. Gilas Pilipinas was roughened up early in the contest at Thanh Tri Gymnasium in Hanoi, and then struggled to counter the Indonesians, who shot the lights out from deep. Matthew Wright led the way for Gilas Pilipinas with 23 points, June Mar Fajardo added 20 more as the Nationals settled for a silver medal in the first since 1989. Thirdy Ravena and Troy Rosario finished with 17 and 12 points, respectively, but Gilas struggled to draw production from its supporting cast. That enabled Indonesia’s trio of naturalized players Marques Bolden, Derric Xzavierro, and Abraham Grahita to assert themselves and keep the Filipinos at the backseat as the game plodded along. … [Read more...] about SEA Games: Gilas Pilipinas’ reign ends as Indonesia gets basketball gold

Representative Image (Image: Reuters) By Matthew Shinkman Cloud computing is growing in popularity and has become a solution for issues that have plagued organisations and overtaxed IT departments for years. In fact, the number of cloud managed service providers is predicted to triple by 2020. While executives are keen to expand into cloud services and make them an integral part of their digital business initiatives, there are some concerns. Extreme financial and reputational damage has yet to occur as a result of cloud computing failures, but the possibility worries risk executives nevertheless. Close Despite the advantages, cloud computing comes with added vulnerability if data is stored … [Read more...] about Cloud computing tops list of emerging risks, reveals Gartner survey

British Monarchy In Transition: Is it Time For ‘King Charles’?

November 27, 2019 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Rumors are spreading throughout the British media that the ousting of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, from his royal status began with a call from Prince Charles , his older brother and heir to the throne, to their 93-year-old mother, the Queen . “He has to leave” — he allegedly told her and she responded by issuing the order. As with so many things related to the British royals, the conversation has no official confirmation but that hasn’t stopped a new wave of speculation ranging from ‘it’s time to put an end to the useless monarchy’ to ‘it’s a purge and Charles is behind it’ to ‘it’s time for the queen to retire and finally give Prince Charles his chance.’ “Future historians may conclude that Prince Andrew’s defining achievement was to give the nation a new verb,” concluded Jamie Doward in The Guardian , referring to the world “de-royaled,” coined by historian Robert Lacey, who advises the Netflix series The … [Read more...] about British Monarchy In Transition: Is it Time For ‘King Charles’?

May 22, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

This article is from Capital & Main , an award-winning publication that reports from California on economic, political, and social issues. After decades of decline in overtime pay, the Biden administration is considering action to sharply expand access in a time of high inflation. This is the fourth article of a four-part series examining the 40-year effort by big business and elected officials to deny Americans extra pay for extra work. advertisement advertisement With Americans struggling with inflation, workers’ advocates are banking on a White House that has promised to make millions more workers eligible for overtime wages that pay time and a half. Two presidents who made similar promises over the last 45 years failed to deliver, resulting in outdated federal overtime guidelines and underfunded labor enforcement. But during decades in which lawmakers and lobbyists cut away at overtime access, states like Washington and California … [Read more...] about How several states are taking the lead on restoring overtime pay
