There’s a caveman-sized gap in the wellness industry. Brian Johnson, better known as Liver King, has embodied the “ancestral living” movement for the past couple of years, his jacked, sunburnt, Caucasian physique defining the aesthetic for his millions of devotees, regardless of what their own actual ancestors may have looked like. Johnson’s Instagram and TikTok accounts, followed by more than 5 million people, showcase his ripped body—supposedly built solely through lengthy, grueling workouts and regular consumption of raw beef liver and testicles—and he has popularized certain phrases, such as “Why eat vegetables when you can eat testicles?” through a volume-forward posting strategy. His thriving retail operation, Ancestral Supplements, hawks desiccated cow liver and bull testicle capsules. His “Nine Ancestral Tenets,” a collection of nouns and verbs, are “sleep, eat, move, shield, connect, cold, sun, fight, and bond.” Today, Johnson is also the defendant in a … [Read more...] about After Liver King’s fall, the ancestral living movement will need a new dad

China’s gold demand slated to support high prices ahead of Chinese New Year
A relaxation in COVID-19 restrictions and the anticipation of higher demand ahead of the Chinese New Year are driving a rise in gold prices in China. Gold prices reached their highest level earlier this week on 17th January after six months as spot gold jumped to $1,816.69 per ounce by 1:52 p.m. ET (1852 GMT), rising to $1,832.99. "Gold is following the decisions by China to further ease COVID restrictions," on the anticipation of higher demand from the region and in spite of rising yields," Bob Haberkorn, senior market strategist at brokerage firm RJO Futures told news agency Reuters in an interview. A report by the World Gold Council on China’s gold market predicts that China’s economic recovery and gold consumption are likely to benefit from the relaxation of the strict zero-COVID policy. The report also mentions that local gold consumption is also likely to receive traditional festive boosts from the Chinese New Year’s (CNY) holiday in late January. December 2022: In South America, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times
Supporters of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro storm Brazilian government buildings. (Image: AFP/File) Adages don’t come more prosaic than “football is a game of two halves”. But there is profoundness in the anodyne. Just ask Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, our two stalwarts at the FIFA World Cup final in 2022 in Lusail, Qatar. Argentina and France squared off, each with the divine right to add a third star to their sacred crest. La Albiceleste and Messi on the scoresheet in the first half, a rampant 2-0 and all set to take the Jules Rimet trophy to the Americas. And then, Kylian Mbappe, widely touted to be the greatest since Pele, having already won the last World Cup in his teens, had something to say. Another two goals were scored in this half, except by Les Bleu, and 2-2 it was. Extra Time followed the same script, a goal on each side, 3-3, and then penalties. For a while, it looked like Kylian Mbappe, would have two World Cup titles at the age of 23, a feat achieved by the … [Read more...] about December 2022: In South America, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times
Institute a mechanism to deal with sexual harassment cases in sports
Wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Anshu Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on January 19. (Source: AFP) Winner by fall. That would sound good in a wrestling competition. Sadly, fans of Indian sport are bracing themselves to see the fall of either the Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh or an elite grappler Vinesh Phogat. She made sexual harassment charges against him when staging a protest along with fellow wrestlers at the Jantar Mantar. The image of Indian sport, not just wrestling, has taken a beating. And everyone who cares for sport in the country will agree that things should never have come to such a pass. India is now left with an either-or situation and with nobody coming out of this sordid episode smelling of roses. To be sure, sport must be played in a psychologically safe environment, and it is imperative that it is not just elite sport that gets the attention. While the elite athletes in national camps may have … [Read more...] about Institute a mechanism to deal with sexual harassment cases in sports
I am just waiting for my India debut so that I can fulfil my father’s dream: Sarfaraz Khan
Perhaps no Indian cricketer has been googled as much or trended on social media before playing for India as has Mumbai’s young batsman Sarfaraz Khan. The 25-year-old scored 928 runs at an average of 154.66 in the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy season, 982 runs at an average of 122.75 in the 2021-22 season and over 500 runs in the ongoing season at an average of about 92. Despite his phenomenal run in domestic cricket, Khan hasn’t found a spot on the national team as yet. That’s something unbelievable for someone who at the age of 12 broke the record for the highest score in the Harris Shield interschool tournament in Mumbai, and then proved his potential in the Under-19 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in 2014. In 2015, he became the youngest player to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). And since then, the wait for an India cap has still been on. Moneycontrol.com spoke to Khan on a lot of issues related to his journey, motivation and inspiration. You have been in the news for … [Read more...] about I am just waiting for my India debut so that I can fulfil my father’s dream: Sarfaraz Khan
Hockey debacle highlights Indian sports teams’ tendency to choke
The Indian hockey team in Bhubaneswar during the 2023 World Hockey Cup. (Twitter/@TheHockeyIndia) Last week India failed to reach the quarter finals of the World Cup Hockey tournament after losing to New Zealand , a team ranked six places below it. For the record India hasn’t entered the medals round of the quadrennial event for 48 years. But a bronze medal at the Olympics in 2021 and the privilege of playing at home cheered on by thousands of fans, gave rise to hopes that this time the well-trained team would go deep, at least into the last four stages . In the event, it struggled to beat a young Spanish side and later a Wales team playing in its first ever World Cup. Against New Zealand, the Indian team had a comfortable 3-1 advantage with 20 minutes left. But with the Kiwis capitalized on its opponent’s mounting anxiety and India just seemed to crumble. Not too long ago, the even more fancied Indian cricket team had lost to the same country in the finals of … [Read more...] about Hockey debacle highlights Indian sports teams’ tendency to choke
World Bank cuts 2023 forecasts and warns of global recession
The World Bank slashed its growth forecasts for most countries and regions and warned that new adverse shocks could tip the global economy into a recession. Global gross domestic product will probably increase 1.7% this year, about half the pace forecast in June, the Washington-based lender said Tuesday. That would be the third-worst performance in the last three decades or so, after the contractions of 2009 and 2020. The bank, which also cut its growth estimates for 2024, said persistent inflation and higher interest rates are among the key reasons. It also cited the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and a decline in investment. “The crisis facing development is intensifying” and the setbacks to global prosperity will likely persist, World Bank President David Malpass wrote in a foreword to the bank’s semi-annual Global Economic Prospects report. He said GDP in emerging-market and developing economies at the end of next year will be about 6% below the level … [Read more...] about World Bank cuts 2023 forecasts and warns of global recession

Next Apple Watch May Be Apple Watch X, Not Series 9
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The next Apple watch may be called the Apple Watch X, not the Apple Watch Series 9, according to French website iPhoneSoft . This would be the second time a key Apple mobile tech series has skipped a “9” generation. In 2017, Apple chose to call its lead phone the iPhone X, not the iPhone 9. The official line is this was down to the handset marking 10 years of the iPhone series. “iPhone X” sounded more dynamic and, sure enough, the mobile did represent a major shift in iPhone design. The iPhone X introduced us to the display notch, used to house the tech required for Apple’s face recognition, which was impressive from day one. However, there is another explanation. The number ”9” is considered unlucky in Japan, because when spoken aloud it sounds similar to the word for suffering. Could this be the real reason for the diversion in naming, particularly at a time when the mobile tech market is in the most … [Read more...] about Next Apple Watch May Be Apple Watch X, Not Series 9
