Overhauling Denver’s campaign finance rules was popular with voters in 2018. More than 70% of Denverites who cast ballots that year voted for Referred Measure 2E. The sweeping change to the city’s campaign rules ratcheted down contribution limits for candidates seeking every seat from mayor to the city auditor, banned direct corporate and union campaign contributions and established a fair elections fund to provide public financing for candidates who agreed to abide by even lower contribution limits and other rules. Participate in the fair elections fund and receive a 9-to-1 public funding match on contributions from Denver residents between $5 and $50. In other words, a $50 donation becomes $500 with taxpayer money so long as the donor hails from the city and county. A lot has happened since then. GAS LINES IN AMERICA… Four Governors Declare States Of Emergency Due To Gasoline Shortage Four governors declared states of emergency in response to gas shortages brought on by the Colonial Pipeline hack. Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency on Monday due to his state’s gas shortage. Republicans Govs. Brian Kemp of Georgia and Ron DeSantis of Florida, and Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam declared states of emergency on Tuesday. Republican South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster announced that he would not declare a new state of emergency because the state was already in one due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kemp suspended Georgia’s gas taxes, while Cooper eliminated transportation regulations. McMaster instituted anti-price gouging laws. In my last post , I wrote about how impressed I was with Indianapolis as a tourist city and as a host for what had to be the smoothest, best run Super Bowl imaginable. In a week filled with parties, big name concerts and all sorts of VIP events, the Taste of the NFL and its Party With A Purpose took the cake - except in this case the cake was a huge depiction of a football field complete with edible Eli Manning and Tom Brady jerseys and even the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Leila de Lima and her former aide, Ronnie Dayan, as it found no probable cause for the accusation. The resolution ordering the dismissal of the case was dated July 22 but was released only on Tuesday, Aug. 9. The resolution said there were glaring inconsistencies in the testimonies provided by the complainant, the Special Investigation Team of the Office of the Ombudsman. De Lima was supposed to have received bribe money – collected by Dayan —  from convicted drug dealer Kerwin Espinosa. I’ll Have Another, as in I’ll Have Another Kentucky Derby, hopefully as soon as next year. I just returned from Louisville, Churchill Downs, and “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” and I can sum my experience up in one word: Awesome. I’ve been to a lot of major sporting events, including the Super Bowl, and the argument could be made that the Kentucky Derby is the best of all, mainly because it is about so much more than the race itself. Go to the World Series or NBA Finals and you get 3 hours of entertainment. Much of the fun surrounding the Super Bowl is in the form of invitation-only parties and VIP events, not the game. But the Kentucky Derby is the complete package, morning to night fun - for two full days - at a minimum.
