Representative image (Image: AP) Sweden said on Thursday it would tighten laws covering membership of terrorist organisations months after an agreement with Turkey on fighting terrorism aimed at overcoming its objections to Swedish NATO membership. The new law, which the government hopes will come into force in June, will give authorities much wider powers to detain and prosecute individuals who support terrorist organisations, either through financing or other means. "We are talking about extremely far-reaching criminalisation," Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer told reporters. Until now it had been hard to prosecute people unless their actions could be coupled to a specific terrorist act, Strommer said. The new law would cover all forms of participation. Strommer said that the need for tighter laws had been highlighted by the attack in central Stockholm in 2017 in which a man mowed down pedestrians on a busy shopping street, killing five. Two young Thai activists in serious condition after staging hunger strike over lèse-majesté law
Two Thai activists are reportedly in serious condition after staging a hunger strike over Thailand’s lèse-majesté law. The young women activists, 21 year old Tantawan Tuatulanon “Tawan,” and 23 year old Orawan Phupong “Bam,” were accused of insulting the monarchy after holding up a poster in a mall that allegedly defamed the monarchy. The poster’s writing asked whether people thought the royal motorcade created trouble for the country’s residents since it created road blockages and traffic jams. According to The Guardian , Tawan and Bam are on strike to demand the lese majeste law be repealed, along with other changes that include the courts allowing activists to be released on bail. Both of them started refusing water and food on Saturday, January 18, 2023 and were both hospitalised two days later. Does newly surfaced video show Michelle Obama staging sit-in at Harvard Law?
Newly surfaced footage shows a young woman who appears to be Michelle Obama, and several other students, staging a sit-in in the Harvard Law School dean’s office in 1988. According to J. Christian Adams of Pajamas Media, the video depicts the students — including the woman who appears to be Mrs. Obama — conducting a protest to “solve the minority faculty problem,” as one student puts it, by implementing race-based hiring practices. President Obama’s time at Harvard Law has received fresh scrutiny lately, including new attention on relationship with Derrick Bell, the first tenured black law professor at Harvard and the main author of the controversial “Critical Race Theory.” The White House did not immediately respond to The Daily Caller’s request for comment regarding identifying the woman who appears to be Michelle Obama. Job one is getting Chinese surveillance balloon out of US airspace: Antony Blinken
Blinken reiterated that the US is confident this is a Chinese surveillance balloon. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday said the first task at their disposal is to ensure that the Chinese surveillance balloon which is hovering over its sky is out of its territory, as he defended his decision to postpone his planned trip to Beijing. "Job one is getting it out of our airspace. We continue to believe that having open lines of communication is important. Indeed, this incident only underscores the importance, and that’s why we will maintain them. That’s why, when conditions permit, I plan to go to China. But the most important thing right now is to see that this surveillance asset gets out of our airspace, and we’ll take it from there," Blinken told reporters at a news conference here. China’s latest IPO reform seen unlikely to flood markets with new issuance
SHANGHAI – China’s move this week to streamline stock market listing rules is unlikely to result in a flood of initial public offerings, bankers say, citing the prospect of state intervention on national security and other grounds that would result in delays. Beijing published draft rules on Wednesday to broaden its fledgling registration-based IPO system, expand the U.S.-style mechanism to all corners of China’s stock market in a shift designed to speed up listings and corporate fundraising. Under the new system, China’s stock exchanges will themselves vet IPOs with a focus on information disclosure. Currently, IPOs on China’s blue-chip boards need clearance from the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) under an approval-based system – one that means long delays and IPO prices capped by the regulators. The reform was hailed by state media and analysts as a key milestone that would make China’s IPO market more inclusive, transparent and efficient. But in reality, … [Read more...] about China’s latest IPO reform seen unlikely to flood markets with new issuance

RCap’s second auction continues to be on hold as lenders withdraw NCLAT appeal
Reliance Capital’s (Rcap) second round of auction continues to remain on hold as the lenders on January 25 chose to withdraw the appeal from National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) challenging the order of National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) postponing the company’s insolvency proceedings. The appellate tribunal observed that it would not be appropriate for it to comment on the case on merits, as NCLT is yet to pronounce the order. What was argued? Appearing for the lenders, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal argued that they were losing money every week as the company’s auction is yet to be finalised. He stated that a huge public interest is involved as the lenders include entities such as Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) and Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), thus urging the NCLAT to vacate the status quo order. Sibal further said that a private company cannot get an order from the NCLT barring the lenders from discovering higher value for the company. … [Read more...] about RCap’s second auction continues to be on hold as lenders withdraw NCLAT appeal
Oklahoma Treasurer Presses Financial Institutions To Say Whether They’re Boycotting Energy Firms
Republican State Treasurer Todd Russ of Oklahoma sent a letter to over 100 financial institutions to determine if their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) policies disqualify them from working with the Oklahoma government, Russ’ office announced Wednesday. Companies will have until March 31 to respond to a series of 19 questions that the state of Oklahoma will use to determine if the company is violating Oklahoma law by engaging in a boycott of energy companies, according to the letter obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation. Russ specifically mentioned BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager and frequent target of GOP criticism for its consistent support of ESG investing, which Republican critics allege violates its fiduciary duty to its clients, in a statement to the DCNF. “This list is crucial to provide accountability for our government entities, including organizations responsible for pension funds such as the Oklahoma Public Employees Retirement … [Read more...] about Oklahoma Treasurer Presses Financial Institutions To Say Whether They’re Boycotting Energy Firms
