Which Comes First: Inflation or Political Instability?: Stephen Mihm

April 25, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Bloomberg Inflation is often viewed as an economic phenomenon, with mostly economic effects. Policy makers today worry about what inflation will do to the housing market; they express concern about government borrowing costs. They might note changes in individual economic behavior: a shopper pinching pennies at the grocery store. Politicians will worry about being voted out of office if they are blamed for its economic impact. But inflation is associated with more than just economics and electability. It is also linked to political instability. The historical record contains many cases where inflation went hand in hand with major political realignments, coups and even bloody revolutions. This history is worth keeping in mind as countries throughout the world grapple with spiraling prices. That inflation could fuel political instability — or vice versa — may seem self-evident, but teasing out a causal relationship is easier said than done. It’s a classic chicken-and-the-egg … [Read more...] about Which Comes First: Inflation or Political Instability?: Stephen Mihm

Ricky Gervais Says ‘Smart People’ Aren’t Offended By Jokes

May 18, 2022 by dailycaller.com

Ricky Gervais thinks intelligent people don’t find comedy offensive. During a Tuesday night interview on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” the legendary comedian touched on joking about subjects like AIDs, Hitler and more, and he thinks “smart people” understand when a joke is just a joke. Why you need to take right-wing comedy seriously

May 10, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

It was one of the more spectacular TV flops of the 21st century. Late in the second term of President George W. Bush, in 2007, Fox News decided that it had the right-wing alternative to Comedy Central’s popular and influential The Daily Show with Jon Stewart . The 1/2 Hour News Hour would puncture liberal pieties and media bias in the fashion that Stewart and his cast of fake correspondents fired barbs at conservatives and right-wing media like Fox News. The show tanked—hard—more or less after the pilot aired in February 2007. And with its failure, modern progressives (and future leftists) had all the evidence they needed: Conservatives weren’t funny. advertisement advertisement For the last 15 years, that take—frequently informed by one failed late-night show—has stuck among anyone who isn’t a conservative. But all the while, right wingers were making comedy—and succeeding. Some of it flew under the radar in subterranean clubs and YouTube channels, … [Read more...] about Why you need to take right-wing comedy seriously

Ukrainian troops evacuate from Mariupol, ceding control to Russia

May 17, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

KYIV/NOVOAZOVSK, Ukraine (Reuters) -Ukraine's military said on Tuesday it was working to evacuate all remaining troops from their last stronghold in the besieged port of Mariupol, ceding control of the city to Russia after months of bombardment. The evacuation of hundreds of fighters, many wounded, to Russian-held towns, likely marked the end of the longest and bloodiest battle of the Ukraine war and a significant defeat for Ukraine. Mariupol is now in ruins after a Russian siege that Ukraine says killed tens of thousands of people in the city. With the rest of Mariupol firmly in Russian hands, hundreds of Ukrainian troops and civilians had holed up beneath the city's Azovstal steelworks. Civilians inside were evacuated in recent weeks, and more than 260 troops, some of them wounded, left the plant for Russian-controlled areas late on Monday. "The 'Mariupol' garrison has fulfilled its combat mission," the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces said in a statement. "The supreme … [Read more...] about Ukrainian troops evacuate from Mariupol, ceding control to Russia

Union Station was called a “lawless hellhole.” Have 1,200 arrests and citations changed anything?

May 15, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

Police officers from the Regional Transportation District walked slowly through Union Station’s underground bus terminal at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, rousing people from sleep. The air smelled of weed and chemicals. The fluorescent lights cast a blue hue on the people inside. The officers gently shook people sleeping slumped on benches or on the floor, one man with a red lighter in his hand. Another man slept sitting upright on a bench designed to deter sleeping, a square of foil in his hand. An officer woke up a man curled in a bike trailer, only his shoes poking out from under the blankets. “Hello?” Officer Stephen Johnson said. “Are you OK?” Eventually, the men stood up, gathered their things and walked away. It’s a scene that plays out daily in Denver’s largest transit hub, where police have made more than 1,200 arrests and citations in the past six months in a concerted effort to curb drug use and stop people without housing from using the public space as a shelter. The … [Read more...] about Union Station was called a “lawless hellhole.” Have 1,200 arrests and citations changed anything?

Allianz unit to plead guilty, pay billions over hedge fund loss

May 17, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A NEW YORK/FRANKFURT (May 17): A unit of Allianz SE agreed to plead guilty to fraud and pay US$5.8 billion in fines and restitution after a relatively low-risk group of investment funds collapsed in the wake of pandemic market gyrations. Allianz Global Investors (AGI), a New York investment adviser wholly owned by the German insurance giant, will plead guilty to a single count of securities fraud and will pay, along with its parent company, more than US$5 billion to victims. The total payout, including a US$1 billion fine to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), is covered by provisions the company has already taken, it said. Gregoire Tournant, a former executive with the firm, was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged separately for his role in the alleged scheme to defraud investors, Manhattan US Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement. Tournant, the former chief investment officer and co-lead portfolio manager of the Structured Alpha … [Read more...] about Allianz unit to plead guilty, pay billions over hedge fund loss

Allianz fund managers’ paydays could be followed by prison

May 18, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (May 18): He was a hedge-fund manager supposedly under the watchful eye of a “master cop” — an Allianz SE unit that policed his every move. Instead, US authorities say, Greg Tournant sold lies to investors that cost customers, and now Allianz, billions of dollars, and resulted in a guilty plea to federal charges of securities fraud by Allianz Global Investors US. News on Tuesday that the US unit of the German insurance giant was admitting guilt over the collapse of its Structured Alpha group of hedge funds leaves many questions unanswered, including a big one: Will Tournant, who had told investors Structured Alpha would do well whether markets went up or down, end up in prison? For Allianz SE, Tuesday’s development brought an end to legal headaches that have engulfed the German insurer since the funds imploded in March 2020, when financial markets reeled during the early days of the pandemic. The demise of the Structured Alpha funds is just the latest … [Read more...] about Allianz fund managers’ paydays could be followed by prison

New Hertz CEO Says Customer False Arrests Are ‘Not Acceptable’

April 9, 2022 by www.inc.com

New Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr has publicly admitted for the first time that some customers have been arrested for driving cars they rented . "It's not acceptable to Hertz to have any customer, a single customer, sort of, caught up in some of what's happened," Scherr told CNBC on Monday, about a month after starting his new job. The admission is a huge change for Hertz, to say the least. For more than a decade, the company has fought these claims in various courts, arguing that any customer arrests are the customers' own fault. " The vast majority of these cases involve renters who were many weeks or even months overdue returning vehicles and who stopped communicating with us well beyond the scheduled due date," a Hertz representative told Inc.com late last year. "Situations where vehicles are reported to the authorities are very rare and happen only after exhaustive attempts to reach the customer." The representative went on to disparage the reputation of the attorneys … [Read more...] about New Hertz CEO Says Customer False Arrests Are ‘Not Acceptable’

Why Tesla Could Become The Netflix Of The EV Market

May 19, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Netflix NFLX was a pioneer in the online streaming industry. This year, it became clear that the incumbents had finally caught up. What’s more, Netflix is not poised — as it was in 2007 — to enjoy rapid upward growth by creating a new industry that builds on its strengths. Now — after reporting a drop in subscribers — its stock trades 74% below its October 2021 peak. Could the same thing happen to Tesla? An MIT professor and a J.D. Power & Associates executive told me that Tesla — whose stock sits 43% below its high — will face considerable challenges from incumbents. However, by improving its vehicle design, offering a broader product selection, boosting manufacturing quality, and upgrading its customer service, they could envision Tesla sustaining its rapid growth by capturing more mainstream customers. How Netflix Lost Its Edge For years, Netflix defied analysts who said that the likes of Disney, … [Read more...] about Why Tesla Could Become The Netflix Of The EV Market

With their 112-87 romp over the Mavericks in the best-of-seven opener Wednesday, the Warriors moved within one of becoming just the fifth franchise in NBA history to record 200 postseason wins. The Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and San Antonio Spurs currently are the only members of the exclusive 200 Club. In rolling to a seventh straight triumph at home this postseason, the Warriors dominated the Mavericks in almost every aspect of Game 1, … [Read more...] about NBA: Warriors aim for 200th playoff win, 2-0 lead over Mavericks
