Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Data is fluid. Information is fluid because it moves in between applications, services, functions, tools and the database systems it resides in. Information is fluid because it is increasingly channelled in real-time in contemporary data streaming environments - and information is fluid because it is constantly changing and morphing its form, value and structure across the many types of data that we now seek to manage in business. Information is also fluid because we channel some of it into data lakes, a term used to describe the pool of largely unstructured data that a business may not make immediate use of… but does still identify as potentially valuable. From the data lake we then get the data lakehouse , a hybrid term used to denote some of the structures we would find in a more ordered data warehouse with the expansiveness and lower cost functionality of the data lake. Wyndham Hotels Grabs A Windfall From America’s Infrastructure Agenda
With thousands of construction workers and contractors needing long-term housing, the world’s largest hotel franchisor is launching a new brand for the booming boots-and-hardhat market. G eoff Ballotti is staring at a map on his office wall and likes what he sees. Nearly two dozen dots sprinkled across the United States represent future semiconductor factories. Outside of the microchip sector, few executives would seek out such a stodgy map from the Semiconductor Industry Association, let alone hang it on a wall. But for the CEO of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts (2022 revenue: $1.56 billion), each dot on that map represents a giant, flashing-light opportunity. Ballotti quickly rattles off examples of locations where new chip factories are slated to appear. Intel is building two plants in Chandler, Arizona, at around $30 billion a pop. In Texas, plants have been announced by Texas Instruments in Sherman ($30 billion) and by Samsung in Taylor ($25 billion). In Indiana, they are … [Read more...] about Wyndham Hotels Grabs A Windfall From America’s Infrastructure Agenda

A Quantum Leap In Timing
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Paul is President of Quantum Computing at ColdQuanta , where he leads the team building the world’s most useful quantum computer. So much of modern life relies on GPS that it has been estimated that an outage would cost the U.S. economy over $1 billion per day. Such an outage isn’t too far-fetched. We have seen recent examples of GPS being blocked in conflict zones, spoofed for nefarious purposes and disrupted by solar storms. At its heart, GPS is a timing system. To understand how timing relates to navigation, and how quantum technology will enable us to overcome the limitations of GPS, we need to go back in history a few hundred years. Dava Sobel’s book Longitude recounts the tale of John Harrison’s mechanical clock that revolutionized maritime navigation and global trade. In the same way that Harrison’s clock accelerated economic growth through the 18th and 19th centuries, optical clocks are … [Read more...] about A Quantum Leap In Timing

Putting The 2022 Stock Market Decline In Perspective
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Jonathan Dash is founder of Dash Investments . As CIO, he is responsible for the firm’s Investment Management and Asset Allocation decisions. Last year's stock market performance was not what anyone would have wanted, but it was to be expected. For those keeping score, it was the largest yearly decline since 2008 . That could be catastrophic for someone who initially invested in January 2022 with just a one-year time horizon. But most investors don't invest for a one-year period. They invest with their sights set on a long-term goal 10, 20 or 30 years out. But even for someone who started investing just three years ago, their average annual return at the end of 2022 would have been 8.22% . For someone who began five years ago, their average annual return would have been 9.11% . A 10-year horizon ending in 2022 would have generated a 12.4% average annual return. You see where I'm going with this. In a … [Read more...] about Putting The 2022 Stock Market Decline In Perspective

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin CEO & Founder @ Refocus , EdTech enthusiast, investor, mentor and marketing expert. Every U.S. Crypto Exchange (And Binance) Is Being Investigated By The SEC, Says Senator Lummis Staffer
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Widely circulated reports that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating $20 billion crypto exchange Coinbase are just the tip of the iceberg, according to a staffer from U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis’ (R-Wy) office. The staffer says every U.S. crypto exchange—and the largest crypto exchange in the world, Binance—are in various stages of being investigated. There are more than 40 U.S. cryptocurrency exchanges, according to crypto data site, CoinGecko. The SEC has not responded to multiple requests for comment. Coming in the wake of a number of SEC actions asserting the regulator’s domain over the crypto industry, and an equally strong response by the U.S Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) pushing back against what it characterizes as “regulation through enforcement,” the staffer says the SEC urgently wants to resolve its dispute with the CFTC over crypto jurisdiction. If the matter isn’t … [Read more...] about Every U.S. Crypto Exchange (And Binance) Is Being Investigated By The SEC, Says Senator Lummis Staffer
