Govt pushes ahead with KUHP revision

June 28, 2022 by www.thejakartapost.com

News Desk (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta   ● Tue, June 28 2022 Despite widespread calls to pause deliberations on the revised Criminal Code so that public concerns can be addressed, the Law and Human Rights Ministry expects the legislation to be “expedited” for passage in the coming months. Deputy Law and Human Rights Minister Edward OS Hiariej, a former law professor at Gadjah Mada University, said that although the draft revisions to the Criminal Code would be unlikely make it to a House of Representatives plenary session in July, a deal could be struck in August to pass the bill into law. The deputy minister said the government was on “a historic mission” to decolonize the current Criminal Code, which is founded on Dutch colonial law. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily digital newspaper No advertisements, no interruptions Privileged access to our events … [Read more...] about Govt pushes ahead with KUHP revision

Russia slips into historic default as sanctions muddy next steps

June 27, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (June 27): Russia defaulted on its external sovereign bonds for the first time in a century, the culmination of ever-tougher Western sanctions that shut down payment routes to overseas creditors. For months, Russia had found paths around the penalties imposed after the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine. But at the end of the day on Sunday, the grace period on about US$100 million of trapped interest payments due May 27 expired, a deadline considered an “Event of Default” if missed. The route to this point has been far from normal, as Russia has the resources to pay its bills — and tried to do so — but was blocked by the sanctions. Those restrictions also mean there’s huge uncertainty about what comes next, and about how investors can go about getting their money. “With Russia benefiting from the high price of its energy exports, it clearly has both the means and the desire to pay its foreign debt,” said Giles Coghlan, chief analyst at HYCM Group. It’s a … [Read more...] about Russia slips into historic default as sanctions muddy next steps

Roe Dies. America Divides – And It Ain’t All About Women

June 24, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “ Women are just roadkill in this fight, it’s all about men .” (Quote from the upcoming documentary Fairplay by Jennifer Siebel Newsom.) The end of Roe v Wade is the first big wave of the Conservative Supreme Court’s impact on America. It won’t be the last. The Trumped-up Court is now muscling up its macho-retro stance, and five robed judges have just robbed some 36 million American women of their right to an abortion. While it will drown women’s rights to bodily control, it also reveals the scarily undemocratic dance this divided nation is now locked in. After all, a majority of Americans support abortion. Yet what became a constitutional right a half-century ago has just been reversed - it is unlikely to be won back anytime soon. It’s a move that should worry at least as many men as women. Almost all 38 OECD countries allow abortion. American exceptionalism is going down a dark, backward slide. Women are always … [Read more...] about Roe Dies. Food export bans risk fueling inflation

June 28, 2022 by www.thejakartapost.com

Rajendra Jadhav, Maximilian Heath and Nigel Hunt (Reuters) (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Mumbai, India/Buenos Aires/London   ● Tue, June 28 2022 It only took 24 hours last month for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in India -- the world's second-largest producer of wheat -- to shelve its plans to "feed the world". In April, Modi had said publicly that the world's most populous democracy was ready to fill part of the gap left by Ukraine in global grains markets by increasing its wheat exports, following five consecutive record harvests. India traditionally exports only a modest amount of wheat, retaining most of its crop for domestic consumption. On May 12, India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry said it was preparing to send delegations to nine countries to export a record 10 million tons of wheat this fiscal year -- sharply up the previous season. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and … [Read more...] about Food export bans risk fueling inflation

As G7 Meets, The World’s Richest Nations Water Down Aid And Climate Finance

June 27, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As seven of the world’s wealthiest nations meet, it has been revealed that billions of dollars in aid for the poorest countries are being rerouted into climate finance, with G7 nations appearing to indulge in what amounts to a form of creative accounting with regard to their international commitments. A new report from the charity CARE shows that, rather than providing additional money to help developing nations respond to climate change as promised under international agreements, wealthy states like the U.S., Canada and France are consistently overreporting the amount of money they’re providing, while diverting money meant for other development programs. In total, CARE found that an estimated $103 billion of climate finance reported by G7 nations has simply been siphoned straight out of development aid budgets, including funds intended for health, education, gender equality and poverty alleviation. Between 2011 and … [Read more...] about As G7 Meets, The World’s Richest Nations Water Down Aid And Climate Finance
