96% less land to make a burger than if it had been made from beef. A lifecycle analysis of Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burger, also made from plants, found that it used 93% less land. So-called “cultured or “cell-based” meat, grown from animal cells in bioreactors, also shrinks land use and is poised to soon come to market, with the first regulatory approval recently announced. Companies working on dairy equivalents—such as vegan cheese that uses lab-grown milk proteins—can also eliminate the need for huge pastures. (If people voluntarily choose to eat less meat and dairy, that would also reduce land use, but it may be an easier sell to provide options that just have less impact on the environment.) … [Read more...] about Why we need to “rewild” our environment

IAmA Community-Focused Innovator: The Secret To Reddit’s Success
Ohanian believes that the story behind the creation of the IAmA subreddit–where politicians like Obama, actors and musicians, or regular people with extraordinary jobs or fascinating stories answer readers’ questions–is the perfect example of the community-centric model that had makes Reddit so successful, particularly over the past year. The section was user created, and it grew out of Q&As that were occurring on the site organically. “Steve [Huffman, Reddit’s cofounder] and I knew from the very start that we couldn’t do this alone. We needed an active Reddit base to use their ingenuity and our hard work. We would have never come up with IAmA on our own,” Ohanian says. … [Read more...] about IAmA Community-Focused Innovator: The Secret To Reddit’s Success
The Other Legacy: Inside Collaboration Lab Oscilloscope
Part of the collaborative process with each filmmaker involves coming up with a tailor-made, idiosyncratic approach to a film’s release. One of the company’s recent triumphs was the concert documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits, about the now-defunct band LCD Soundsystem. Oscilloscope released the movie in just a handful of theaters as a one-night only event on July 18. “We created a fleetingness, I suppose, to the theatrical element and built up a demand for it that transcended the standard base who would support a film like this,” Berger says. … [Read more...] about The Other Legacy: Inside Collaboration Lab Oscilloscope
Reddit’s former CEO is now in the forest-planting business
One of the challenges the company identified was the lack of land: Some land that was originally forested is now covered by cities or used for farming. Other areas might not be available for sale. But there’s a large amount of desertified land that is available. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification reports that around 4.7 billion acres on the planet—about twice the size of China—have been affected by drought or desertification, but could potentially be restored. Finding enough water to grow trees there is a challenge. But the folks at Terraformation believe that if desalinated water is used to irrigate seedlings, a restored forest will eventually be able to sustain itself. … [Read more...] about Reddit’s former CEO is now in the forest-planting business
Taco Bell is secretly a haven for vegetarians—and it’s adding even more meatless options
In light of that, why did potatoes ever leave the menu? As COVID-19 spread in March, dining rooms closed, and drive throughs became crowded. We documented this drive-through phenomenon in August, but one way Taco Bell responded was to streamline its menu. Potatoes were axed in the interest of speed. (And having worked in a Taco Bell myself, I can say that keeping potatoes cooked and hot on the line was tricky during rush hours.) … [Read more...] about Taco Bell is secretly a haven for vegetarians—and it’s adding even more meatless options
