Box Office: ‘Elvis’ Rocks $31 Million Debut As ‘Black Phone’ Grabs $23 Million
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Elvis opened strong this weekend with a $30.5 million Fri-Sun debut right alongside Top Gun: Maverick’s shockingly huge (also $30.5 million) fifth-weekend gross. Regardless of which film topped the domestic box office when the final figures drop tomorrow, they are both winners. I’ll discuss the Tom Cruise-led sequel later, but the Tom Hanks co-starring music biopic benefited from the former. Some of the best marketing a movie can have is a good trailer playing before a smash hit aimed at similar demographics. Think the Deep Impact teaser attached to Titanic or the Zootopia DMV spot playing before The Force Awakens . With all the pre-summer concern that older, irregular audiences (Elvis Presley isn’t exactly still huge with the kids) wouldn’t show up, the Warner Bros. flick got a last-minute shot in the arm when Top Gun: Maverick soared past $520 million domestic partially thanks to older and irregular moviegoers. … [Read more...] about Box Office: ‘Elvis’ Rocks $31 Million Debut As ‘Black Phone’ Grabs $23 Million
KISS Make Good As Rescheduled ‘End Of The Road’ Dates Kick Off In Milwaukee
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Following a series of five American make-up dates, KISS finds themselves in an unusual position with only three more U.S. stops currently on the books. On tour in Europe ahead of Kiss Kruise XI in October, familiar questions surround the band: what’s next and who will be a part of it? Last month in Milwaukee, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer put on a masterclass in live rock 101 as KISS tore through the hits on stage at American Family Insurance Amphitheater. “Good people of beer city,” mused Stanley on opening night in Wisconsin. “That’s right, I know all about the beer that made Milwaukee famous!” said the singer, localizing the show on stage following rollicking takes on “Detroit Rock City” and “Shout it Out Loud” to get things started. “I know this is beer city but here’s an old school classic from KISS’ Alive! ” he continued, putting forth an impressive a cappella intro on “Cold … [Read more...] about KISS Make Good As Rescheduled ‘End Of The Road’ Dates Kick Off In Milwaukee
Genesis Launch North American Tour With Triumphant Opening Night In Chicago
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “Say we’ll be together ‘til the end,” sang Phil Collins Monday night in Chicago as English prog rockers Genesis launched their North American tour on stage at United Center. Amidst an arena concert landscape dominated by reunion tours - in a year where acts like the Rolling Stones are staging highly entertaining concerts even as each member approaches the age of 80 - most tours lack a tangible sense of finality. Another go at it almost always seems plausible. But this Genesis outing feels different, with even the tour’s title - “The Last Domino?” - seemingly hinting at the inevitable. Plagued by a litany of health issues, singer Phil Collins, 70, now sits for the majority of the group’s two hour plus performances, unable to play the drums as he did when Genesis last performed together in 2007. Nevertheless, Monday night in Chicago, the first of two sold out shows at United Center, found Collins in fine … [Read more...] about Genesis Launch North American Tour With Triumphant Opening Night In Chicago
Weekend Box Office: ‘Lightyear’ Falls 65% As ‘Jurassic World 3’ Tops $300 Million
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In box office holdover news not related to Top Gun: Maverick , Universal and Amblin’s Jurassic World Dominion continued to play like the Tomorrow Never Dies of summer 2022 (pulling in terrific grosses even while being overshadowed by a zeitgeist-dominating blockbuster). The $185 million dino threequel earned another $26.4 million (-55%) to bring its domestic total to $302.775 million in 17 days. The drop is close enough to Fallen Kingdom (-53% for a $28 million third-weekend gross) to presume that audiences mostly like it at least as much as the last one, even if it’ll have to settle for a “mere” $350-$375 million domestic finish. Colin Trevorrow and Emily Carmichael’s franchise caper earned $42.9 million overseas for a new $443 million foreign and $746.6 million worldwide cume. It might not crack $1 billion, especially with China delivering half of what it did for the last two films ($227 million and $267 million), … [Read more...] about Weekend Box Office: ‘Lightyear’ Falls 65% As ‘Jurassic World 3’ Tops $300 Million

Box Office: Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Flies Past $1 Billion Worldwide
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Paramount and Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick earned another $30.5 million (-31%) in its fifth weekend of domestic release. That put the film back in the top slot for the weekend, a remarkable achievement in any era let alone our frontloaded, opening weekend-centric theatrical environment and with two solid openers on its tail. That fifth-weekend gross is the second-biggest such fifth-weekend gross ( American Sniper didn’t expand into wide release until its fourth weekend) between Titanic ($30 million in 1998) and Avatar ($42 million in 2010). It also puts its domestic total at $521.723 million. With a new overseas total (it was, again, the top movie overseas too dropping just 26%) of $487 million, Tom Cruise’s $170 million legacy sequel has now earned $1.005 billion worldwide.
