Flags of South Korea | INQ STOCK PHOTO A unit of a South Korean company will produce tapioca starch in the Philippines via a P750-million project that is also expected to hire nearly 500 Filipino workers. In a statement, the Board of Investments (BOI) said it approved the application of Daesang Philippines Corp., which would use the same modern manufacturing technology used in its starch plants in South Korea. The project, which will be receiving tax breaks, is expected to start commercial operations in January next year. It will have a production capacity of 33,000 tons of tapioca starch and 4,446 tons of tapioca residue annually. Republicans in Congress praised the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization on Friday, which overturned Roe v. Wade’s holding that Americans have a constitutional right to an abortion. - A + A BENGALURU (June 24): The Philippine peso fell for the eighth straight session on Friday (June 24) as markets feared a modest rate hike by the country's central bank may not be enough to curb surging inflation, while other Asian currencies rose against a weaker US dollar. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) stuck to a 25-basis-point increase in its benchmark rate on Thursday for a second month in a row, fearing that more aggressive tightening could compromise growth. "Concerns over the gradual pace of BSP hikes, weaker budget balance, as well as policy uncertainty under the new president could be adding to PHP drags in the interim," Maybank analysts said in a note. In a memorandum, Cabantan urged the faithful to refrain from inviting Fr. Melvin Clapano in celebrating masses in homes, and officiating house and office blessings within the archdiocese’s jurisdiction. Clapano, according to the archbishop, was still celebrating mass despite that he has already been defrocked for “attempting to contract a civil marriage.” It was not immediately known if Clapano’s civil marriage had indeed come through. “Catholics should not knowingly join masses celebrated by Fr. In a statement Wednesday , Japan’s aid agency said it signed this week with the MMDA the records of discussion for the comprehensive traffic management plan for Metro Manila project. This technical cooperation project, which will start next year and end in 2022, was aimed at mitigating road traffic congestion along Metro Manila’s major corridors, Jica said. Specifically, Jica will dispatch Japanese experts to assist the MMDA on intelligent transport systems, road traffic management, as well as traffic policy.
