Financial Advisors: Is Now The ‘Right Time’ To Start Exploring Your Options?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The truth is that taking the time to get educated about the opportunities available is a smart business decision—regardless of whether you want or are ready to make a move. Advisors often wonder if there’s a right time to embark upon the due diligence process. And the reality is that it’s important that they always stay aware and educated about the opportunities around them—particularly in an environment that’s evolved rapidly over the last several years. But to do a “deep dive” takes some time and effort on the advisor’s part and is generally left to those experiencing a gap between where they are now and where they want to be. And that gap helps determine the urgency around the next steps you might take. If the gap is big enough and important enough to justify the hassle of a move, then it makes sense to begin due diligence. You may decide that a more passive approach – what we call “armchair exploration” – is … [Read more...] about Financial Advisors: Is Now The ‘Right Time’ To Start Exploring Your Options?

No money to be made in recycling glass in this age of plastic
PETALING JAYA: You buy a bottle of your favourite fruit juice, slurp it down and then throw it into the nearest bin. The whole process may just take 10 minutes – but that glass bottle could be here for 1,000,000 more years. Glass is not being recycled, at least not in a major way. ALSO READ: No market for recycled glass bottles Most recyclers are business-driven and only focus on materials that give them the most returns, like plastic and paper. Environment and waste management specialist Dr Theng Lee Chong said the reason plastic is favoured over glass is because it can fetch a better price in terms of reselling and production cost. “Other factors that turn recyclers off from glass are that it takes up more space, weighs more and is harder to handle in terms of transportation and logistics. “Not all types of glass can be recycled. Bulbs, sheet glass, windshields and car accessories as well as windows cannot be recycled because some may contain hazardous material like … [Read more...] about No money to be made in recycling glass in this age of plastic

We could be using facial authentication for a whole lot more than unlocking our phones
Apple’s product release events are famous for providing the stage where innovative products and services are introduced to the world for the first time. From Steve Jobs pulling the iPod out of his pocket to the iPhone’s debut, the event’s reputation is well established as a must-see reveal. advertisement advertisement In 2017, Apple’s flagship event was defined not by a groundbreaking new product but by a significant hardware shift. Instead of using a person’s fingerprint or passcode for authentication, the iPhone would use the face as a credential. The tech was called FaceID, and it revolutionized access control for our devices by introducing a secure and passive authentication experience for everyone, becoming second nature, many not realizing what’s going on behind the scenes. The technology was reported to be 20 times more secure than fingerprint readers, and it was one of the projects at Apple that I worked on as an engineer in the new product … [Read more...] about We could be using facial authentication for a whole lot more than unlocking our phones
Testing The New Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The E-Class Estate enjoys a bit of a cult following among quite a few friends, including my sister. In its diesel format, and usually at least two decades old, Mercedes-Benz’s grand and grown-up motor car appears to win over its station wagon German rivals — the likes of Audi A6 Avant and BMW 5 Series Touring. These super fans all have young families and lead active lives, so abundant space is a key seller. They also want their cars to fuse function with a touch of old-school class and certainly not be showy. Which is one of the reasons I’m keen to try out the all-new Mercedes E-Class Estate. The other is that I’m drawn to the station wagon aesthetic — the elongated sedan that maintains the elegance, but adds extra function, as in rear and trunk space. The car sent to me is also diesel-powered, albeit a refined engine that passes the stringent new London emissions regulations which forced the above-mentioned friends and … [Read more...] about Testing The New Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate
Resolving worker shortage woes
AS you’re aware, there is a serious manpower situation that Malaysia is facing. Some are saying Malaysia is at breaking point. It’s feared that our country is missing a golden opportunity to capitalise on high palm oil prices and will suffer production losses because of the acute shortage of workers. What has been done? According to the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) report in 2015, up to 78% of the oil palm plantation workers are foreign workers, with most of them coming from Indonesia. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there was no new arrival of foreign workers beginning from March 2020, and Malaysia recently opened its international borders on April 1, 2022. Due to the shortage of workers in the oil palm plantation sector, expected revenue losses are around RM20bil. ALSO READ: More foreign labour soon This has led to the Malaysian Cabinet to agree to a special exemption for the intake of 32,000 foreign workers for the palm oil sector in April 2022. Hinduja brothers find a historical link to Buckingham Palace through their new London home
Carlton House Terrace overlooks The Mall and St James’ Park in London. The Hinduja brothers now occupy Nos 13-16 in the eastern terrace. (Photo: Danish Khan) In 2006, the Hinduja brothers bought 13-16 Carlton House Terrace for £58 million. They spent another £50 million on renovating the 67,000 sq. ft home which was formally opened in 2011. Over 300 people were invited to the housewarming party, but it was a few more years before the Hindujas moved in completely. The family was reluctant to leave their more modest 25,000 sq. ft abode - just opposite Carlton House Terrace - where they had lived for over 30 years. The four brothers Srichand, Gopichand, Prakash and Ashok who control the Hinduja Group do believe in lucky charms. But now the 25-bedroom property, which comprises four interconnected six-storey Georgian Houses, designed by architect John Nash with its classical cornices, French polished timber, and ceiling roses is where they host the high and the mighty. It is easy … [Read more...] about Hinduja brothers find a historical link to Buckingham Palace through their new London home
How I beat Wall Street for 103 consecutive months
Wall Street, New York City (File image: Reuters) From 1999 to 2019, I managed money for some of the largest hedge funds in the world ( Millennium, Brevan Howard, ExodusPoint ). During that time, I generated positive returns for 103 consecutive months, which is quite possibly the longest such streak in hedge fund history. This extraordinary feat was made possible by my strict adherence to three key principles. First, I made sure that I had a method that turns the odds in my favour. Second, I had the discipline to stay with that system in good times, and bad times. Finally, it is vital to play with a bankroll that is large enough to ride out market fluctuations. Lose any one of these three things, and it becomes impossible to beat the market for any length of time. Have A System : As a professional gambler who accidently landed on Wall Street way back in 1993, I have always had a keen sense of the odds in any game. I played blackjack because it is the only game where a … [Read more...] about How I beat Wall Street for 103 consecutive months
