Box Office: ‘Top Gun 2’ Passes $1.35 Billion As ‘Thor 4’ Tops ‘Thor 3’

August 7, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In holdover weekend box office news for the weekend, DC League of Super-Pets dropped 52% for an $11.2 million second-weekend gross. That’s a not-so-super hold for an animated film that didn’t exactly open sky-high. DreamWorks and Universal’s The Bad Guys dropped 32% from a $24 million debut. To be fair, Super Pets’ $45.102 million ten-day total is above The Bad Guys’ $44.6 million ten-day cume, thanks to decent ‘school’s out for the summer’ weekday grosses. Presuming a conventional rate of descent, we can expect an over/under $70 million domestic finish for the $90 million Dwayne Johnson/Kevin Hart kid-targeted caper. It’s not playing beyond the kid quadrants, and it could end up alongside the *original* Storks ($73 million in 2016) and Smallfoot ($83 million in 2018). Still, hope springs eternal as there are no other big animated releases until Walt Disney’s Strange World over Thanksgiving weekend. Jordan … [Read more...] about Box Office: ‘Top Gun 2’ Passes $1.35 Billion As ‘Thor 4’ Tops ‘Thor 3’

Calvin Harris Drops His Highly-Anticipated Summer Album ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2’

August 5, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Five years ago, Calvin Harris’ album Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 became the unofficial soundtrack of the summer, thanks in large part to its Frank Ocean and Migos-led single, “Slide.” Now, the Scottish producer is attempting to make lightning strike twice with the highly-anticipated follow-up, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2. The album’s release was preceded by groovy singles featuring the likes of Dua Lipa, Justin Timberlake, Tinashe, Normani, Halsey, Pharrell Williams, and more. With Vol. 2 , Harris opted for a more acoustic direction, emphasizing the musicality of his productions as opposed to the danceability. The project is Harris’ first full-length LP in five years, the longest amount of time the “Summer” singer has gone between albums. When speaking with Zane Lowe about the album’s creation, he admitted that his vision on the first edition of Funk Wav wasn’t carried through the entire project — something … [Read more...] about Calvin Harris Drops His Highly-Anticipated Summer Album ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2’

How Hustle Culture May Hurt Your Career

August 7, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin You aren’t a machine, so why should you work like one? As it turns out, more and more people are starting to agree with that, which is why they’re turning their backs on hustle culture. If you’re not familiar with the hustle culture movement, you may be thinking of the old-school definition, which is still sometimes associated with having shady ethics or using obnoxiously pushy sales tactics. But these days, hustling refers to putting work above all else—a never-ending chase for yet another client or promotion. Think long hours at your computer, midnight energy drinks, and answering texts from hustle-leaning colleagues 24/7. Theoretically, your hustler activities should put you at the top of the corporate food chain. But hustling comes at a cost. As so many people found out during the pandemic, being a hustler involves paying a huge personal price. Writer and businesswoman Julie Ball notes in Forbes that the only thing … [Read more...] about How Hustle Culture May Hurt Your Career

Global Cyberattack Seems Intent on Havoc, Not Extortion

June 30, 2017 by www.chiangraitimes.com

More cyber attacks could be in the pipeline after the global havoc caused by the Wannacry ransom-ware. – PARIS – A cyberattack that caused indiscriminate economic damage around the world was apparently designed to create maximum havoc in Russia’s neighbor and adversary Ukraine, security researchers said. While the rogue software used in the attack was configured as extortionate “ransomware,” that may have just been a ruse. “It is clear that this was targeted indiscriminately at Ukrainian businesses, and the Ukrainian government,” Jake Williams, president of the security firm Rendition Infosec and a former member of the U.S. National Security Agency’s elite cyberwarfare group, told The Associated Press in an online chat. “The ‘ransomware’ component is just a smokescreen (and a bad one).” UKRAINE IN PAIN Although the attack was global in its reach, Ukraine bore the brunt. Computers were disabled at banks, government agencies, energy companies, supermarkets, … [Read more...] about Global Cyberattack Seems Intent on Havoc, Not Extortion

Ghislaine Maxwell Sentenced To 20 Years Over Sex Trafficking

June 29, 2022 by www.chiangraitimes.com

(CTN News) – A court sentenced Ghislaine Maxwell for her role in recruiting, trafficking, and exploiting underage girls on behalf of Jeffrey Epstein has been handed down. Earlier this week , Judge Alison Nathan handed down the sentence after slamming the ‘heinous and predatory’ behavior that resulted in her preying on girls as young as 14 with Jeffrey Epstein while they were still teenagers. Manhattan US Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement that today’s sentence holds Ghislaine Maxwell responsible for the heinous crimes she committed against children. In this sentence, the message is clear: no one is above the law, and justice cannot be delayed. The use of a substantial sentence will send an unmistakable message to those who are involved in the sexual abuse and human trafficking of underage victims that they will be held accountable.’ According to the rule of law, and this court is in agreement with this, no matter if you are rich, powerful, or totally … [Read more...] about Ghislaine Maxwell Sentenced To 20 Years Over Sex Trafficking

Father, son get life for hate crime in Ahmaud Arbery’s death

August 8, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

By RUSS BYNUM BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — The white father and son convicted of murder in Ahmaud Arbery’s fatal shooting after they chased him through a Georgia neighborhood were sentenced Monday to life in prison for committing a federal hate crime. A U.S. District Court judge sentenced Travis McMichael and his father Greg McMichael, 66, in Brunswick. Both were previously sentenced to life without parole in a state court for Arbery’s murder. A federal jury in February convicted Greg McMichael, Travis McMichael and neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan of violating Arbery’s civil rights, concluding they targeted him because he was Black. All three were also found guilty of attempted kidnapping, and the McMichaels were convicted of using guns in the commission of a violent crime. The McMichaels armed themselves with guns and used a pickup truck to chase Arbery after the 25-year-old ran past their home on Feb. 23, 2020. Bryan joined the pursuit in his own truck and recorded cellphone … [Read more...] about Father, son get life for hate crime in Ahmaud Arbery’s death

August 1, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin JetBlue and Spirit Airlines announced a merger, really the acquisition of Spirit by JetBlue, this week. The purchase price is $3.8 billion, with each Spirit shareholder to receive $33.50 per share. If the deal goes through (the U.S. Justice Department can say no) JetBlue will join a new “Big 5” of U.S. airlines. The news comes one day after Frontier Airlines, Spirit’s former suitor, terminated its bid for the airline. That concluded a love triangle….err, bidding war…that began with Frontier and Spirit first announcing a merger in February 2022. “Smells like merger Spirit,” wrote Helane Becker, Managing Director Industrials & Airlines & Airfreight Consumer at Cowen Inc, summing up the soap opera with a nod to Nirvana. “Spirit and Frontier agreed to merge in February. Comic Tom Segura Books Funny

August 8, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The other night Natasha, my adult-ish daughter, asked me to accompany her to a book author event for standup comic and podcaster Tom Segura’s best-selling “ I’d like to Play Alone, Please ” (Grand Central Publishing). It would take me too long to unpack all the dissonance and significance in that first sentence but suffice to say that this was so rare an event in every respect that I eagerly agreed. The evening, hosted by Live Talks LA , and introduced by the ever-gracious Ted Hapte-Graber (whose glorious leonine pandemic-grown mane remains largely untamed) took place in the theater of John Adams Middle School (JAMS) Performing Arts Center in Santa Monica which is an 800-seat state-of-the-art venue as good as any performance space on the Westside of LA (my tax dollars at work). Segura, who is one the most successful comics on the standup performance circuit, and who has four comedy specials on Netflix, the most … [Read more...] about Comic Tom Segura Books Funny

August 8, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline A federal court sentenced Travis and Gregory McMichael—two white men involved in the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black jogger—to life in prison on Monday, after a state court also handed down life sentences, while a third man was handed 35 years in prison for his involvement in the 2020 murder that helped fuel nationwide protests over racial injustice. Key Facts Travis McMichael—who fatally shot Arbery while he jogged in McMichael’s neighborhood—was sentenced to life in prison plus 10 years, while his father Gregory McMichael—who was involved in chasing Arbery—was sentenced to life in prison, six months after they were both found guilty of federal hate crimes. A judge rejected the McMichaels’ requests to serve some of their sentences in federal prison after Arbery’s family said they opposed such treatment. William Bryan, the McMichaels’ neighbor who filmed the incident, was also sentenced to 35 … [Read more...] about Ahmaud Arbery Shooter—And Killer’s Father—Sentenced To Life In Prison For Second Time
