Gingers Rule! How Two Redheaded Sisters Turned Hair Color Into A Growing Business

· July 17, 2014 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Hey Kermit , try being red . Now that’s not easy. advertisement advertisement That’s the conclusion sisters Stephanie Vendetti and Adrienne Vendetti Hodges reached, growing up as natural-born redheads. In so many ways, the world just wasn’t built for them, says Adrienne. “For prom, we’d go get our makeup done, but no one knew how to do a redhead’s makeup. Our skin was so sensitive, it was hard to find products.” They’d go to the store to buy hairpins, but everything was made for those much larger markets of blondes or brunettes. Worst of all, though, Adrienne remembers, was the bullying. In their small Rhode Island town, the Vendettis were the only redheads in their school. “The bullying starts early, around second or third grade,” recalls Adrienne. “There are so many different names people call you: carrot top, freckle face. They make fun of your pale skin.” One teacher took to … [Read more...] about Gingers Rule! How Two Redheaded Sisters Turned Hair Color Into A Growing Business

advertisement advertisement advertisement When the Ransom Everglades School set out to augment its Miami high school campus with a new building focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, its educators saw an opportunity. They wanted to rethink how a physical space at the school could reflect the kind of future-focused learning that would happen there. advertisement advertisement “We wanted something that wasn’t traditional,” says Penny Townsend, head of the school. “I wanted every space to be a learning space, that in every corner of the building something was going on.” Perkins & Will’s Miami studio . “It’s informality about, ‘Do I need a desk? Can I just find some soft seating and do my work there?'” advertisement As a building focused on STEM education, there’s also a heavy influence from research facilities. Should armed guards be in schools? This JAMA study on shootings may surprise you

· February 18, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Armed guards are now stationed at schools across the country. But do they actually protect students in active shooter incidents? A surprising new study in JAMA Network Open finds them to be ineffective. advertisement Researchers examined all U.S. shootings at K-12 schools from 1980-2019. They found that of 133 incidents, 1 in 4 had an armed guard on the scene. Not only did the presence of the armed guards not correlate with fewer injuries, but the death rate was 2.83 times greater in school shootings with armed guards. The effect was catastrophic with assault weapons. “An armed officer on the scene was the number one factor associated with increased casualties after the perpetrators’ use of assault rifles or submachine guns,” write the authors. They suggest that officers’ weapons may increase aggression, a phenomenon called “weapons effect,” which may be further exacerbated by the fact that many … [Read more...] about Should armed guards be in schools? If only the bar was as simple and set so low right now. advertisement advertisement As we enter the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the intersection of the ongoing economic crisis, the continuing pandemic, the social justice movement, and increasing inequality are just the short list of what leaders need to acknowledge, manage—and help to solve. We gathered a group of corporate reputation strategists who have spent the last year helping companies manage some of the most important and central issues surrounding COVID-19 to identify key challenges corporate leaders will likely face in this second year of pandemic response. While companies will continue to deal with the pandemic head-on, we believe they … [Read more...] about 8 challenges for business leaders that will shape year 2 of COVID-19

The 3 kinds of intuition you need to make tough decisions

· February 24, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Thanks to Malcolm Gladwell and Nobel Prize-winning economist Daniel Kahneman, we’ve all been sternly warned about the risks of employing intuition when making important decisions. In his book Blink , Gladwell asserts that while our unconscious thinking is “a powerful force, it also can be thrown off, distracted or disabled.” And in his classic, Thinking, Fast and Slow , Kahneman stresses that gut instincts can fail us when we unwittingly apply familiar patterns of experience to unrelated circumstances or situations. advertisement advertisement The truth is, most of us have spent a lifetime developing our rational minds and rely solely upon their counsel when making consequential life choices. And we know that in business today, innumerable companies such as Amazon have placed data at the center of their corporate cultures—and routinely rely on metrics to find the best ways of … [Read more...] about The 3 kinds of intuition you need to make tough decisions
