Yelich had the trophy in 2018 and was having an even better year in 2019 when his fractured kneecap gave the young Dodger the opening he needed to prevent a repeat. Those award-winning campaigns were massive - Yelich went .326-.402-.598 (164 Baseball Reference OPS+) in 2018, and Bellinger .305-.406-.629 (167) the following season. Plus, both were quite young (Yelich was 27, Bellinger 23 in their MVP campaigns) and appeared poised to be at the top of the charts for the foreseeable future.
