4 Things High Risk People Need Now To Fight Covid
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin People with disabilities and chronic illnesses are asking themselves — not for the first time in the last few years — “What do we do now?” As a May 21, 2022 article in The Hill observes, “Americans are ‘checked out’ on COVID-19:” “Even in blue cities, restaurants are packed with people, and many Americans don’t wear masks even on the subway or on airplanes.” If the current surge continues, this may well turn out to be a serious problem for everyone. But this resolutely lax attitude already poses something close to an existential crisis for people with chronic illnesses and disabilities. High risk people today see a combination of more transmissible Covid variants, vaccines that may be losing effectiveness, funding for vaccines and treatments drying up, and public commitment to any sort of precautions just about gone. The disability community sees disaster looming — more mass death and disablement, and a choice … [Read more...] about 4 Things High Risk People Need Now To Fight Covid
Colleges Facing Mental Health Crisis, Here’s What The Bachelorette’s Zac Clark Is Doing About It
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Judd Apatow, who directed the movie Knocked Up , once called college the reward for surviving high school. That may be true for many. But like eating pumpkin pie while skydiving, such rewards aren’t always easy to take. Evidence suggests that college campuses across the U.S. have been embroiled in an ongoing mental health crisis for a while now. And that’s why Zac Clark, who was a contestant in ABC ’s reality TV show The Bachelorette , recently embarked on his “Keep Going” college tour that kept going from April 25 to April 30. Now these days, it may be tempting for some to blame everything mental health-related on the Covid-19 pandemic and the precautions that have been implemented. However, it’s not as if everything was peaches and creamsicles before 2020. For example, a study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found that nearly half of college-age individuals interviewed in 2001 to 2002 had had a … [Read more...] about Colleges Facing Mental Health Crisis, Here’s What The Bachelorette’s Zac Clark Is Doing About It

Ritesh Agarwal, founder and chief executive officer of OYO Hotels & Homes, speaks at the SoftBank World 2019 event in Tokyo, Japan, on Thursday, July 18, 2019. (Bloomberg filepix) - A + A (May 24): Oyo Hotels, the once high-flying Indian startup, is shelving plans for an initial public offering in 2022 after a market downturn that would hurt its valuation, according to people familiar with the matter. The board of Oyo, formally known as Oravel Stays Ltd, talked through a change in the offering’s timing during multiple meetings last week and earlier this week after consulting with its bankers and investors, said the people, asking not to be identified because the decisions aren’t yet public. If the company picks up the process again by year end, the earliest possibility for an IPO would be in 2023, they said. The Gurgaon-headquartered company, which filed preliminary IPO documents last year, is seeking regulatory permission to update its draft prospectus with … [Read more...] about SoftBank-backed Oyo to shelve plans for IPO in 2022, sources say
She thought a dark moment in her past was forgotten. Then she scanned her face online
By Rachel Metz , CNN Business Updated 1124 GMT (1924 HKT) May 24, 2022 (CNN Business) Cher Scarlett, a software engineer, has a history of being misidentified by face-scanning technology, including one instance that may have surfaced a distant ancestor in a photo. So when she was introduced to an online facial-recognition tool she hadn't heard of, she wanted to see whether it would mistake photos of her mom or daughter for her. On February 1, Scarlett uploaded some images of her teenage daughter and her mom to PimEyes , a facial-recognition website meant to be used to find pictures of yourself from around the web — ostensibly to help stamp out issues such as revenge porn and identity theft. She didn't get any images of herself in return — pictures of her daughter yielded other kids, she said, while one of her mom led to some pictures of her mother, plus images of other, similar-looking women. Anyone can use this powerful facial-recognition tool — and … [Read more...] about She thought a dark moment in her past was forgotten. Then she scanned her face online
Billionaire Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel Pledges Stock Options Worth $355 Million To Undisclosed Charitable Causes
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel , a veteran biotech executive whose fortune swelled during the Covid-19 pandemic, on Tuesday revealed he would donate all the after-tax proceeds from his original Moderna stock options—worth about $355 million—to charity over the next year. Key Facts In a regulatory filing on Tuesday, Bancel disclosed he would exercise stock options, originally granted in 2013 and set to expire in August 2023, to acquire nearly 4.6 million shares at a price of $0.99 apiece, a nearly 100% discount to current prices of about $138. Bolsonaro fires Petrobras CEO who warned of diesel crisis
Brazil's right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro fired the chief executive of oil producer Petrobras -- the second in two months -- after the company refused to sell fuels at a discount to consumers warning it would l ead to diesel shortages . Bolsonaro also called for the election of a new board, according to a statement released close to midnight local time on Monday by the state-controlled company, opening the way to a full executive management shake-up. José Mauro Ferreira Coelho is the third Petrobras CEO fired by Bolsonaro over fuel prices. The president, who is seeking re-election in October but lagging in polls, says Petrobras should use its profits to reduce fuel prices and help control inflation. Bolsonaro, who also fired an energy minister earlier this year, appointed Caio Mario Paes de Andrade to replace Coelho. The government controls Petroleo Brasileiro, as the firm is formally known, with a majority of the voting shares, even if private … [Read more...] about Bolsonaro fires Petrobras CEO who warned of diesel crisis
Who’s On Vladimir Putin’s ‘Blacklist’? Not Donald Trump Or Fox News
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Close to 1,000 Americans from across the spectrum of politics, business, journalism, entertainment, faith and advocacy have been permanently banned from entering Russia , a largely symbolic move that has generated a lot of buzz about those included, and excluded. The 963 citizens, including president Joe Biden and vice president Kamala Harris—and her husband, Doug Emhoff —were named by Russia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry Saturday to Russian president Vladimir Putin’s “blacklist,” or what one translation called a “stop list.” It’s all in response to the United States’ historic sanctions and its humanitarian and military support of Ukraine, nearly three months into Moscow’s invasion. “In the context of response to the constantly imposed anti-Russian sanctions by the United States and in connection with incoming requests about the personal composition of our national ‘stop list,’ the Russian Foreign Ministry … [Read more...] about Who’s On Vladimir Putin’s ‘Blacklist’? Here’s another troubling reason inflation will be hard to fight
London (CNN Business) One of the many buzzwords percolating around Davos this week is "fragmentation," the force economists there warned could have "devastating human consequences." By "fragmentation," they are referring to a breakdown of the kind of free-wheeling, border-crossing trade and investment that's defined the global economic order over the past three decades. It is a form of deglobalization — rebuilding fences around national or regional fiefdoms. "Fragmentation is the sense that we may be having economies protect themselves a little more domestically, and that could slow things down," Josh Lipsky, director of the Atlantic Council's GeoEconomics Center, told me. "And then it may make things more expensive in return." It's not a new issue, of course — supply-chain upheaval was turbocharged by the start of the pandemic more than two years ago — but the war in Ukraine, growing political divides and lingering trade disputes are renewing concerns … [Read more...] about Here’s another troubling reason inflation will be hard to fight
