The sleepy fishing village depicted in the paintings of artists like Paul Signac and Henri Matisse was first put on the map by the 50s movie And God Created Woman starring blonde bombshell Brigitte Bardot. And when the Byblos opened its doors 10 years later, it sealed Saint-Tropez’s status as France’s summer party capital thanks to a cast of A-list guests, from Mick Jagger who celebrated his wedding here, to Grace Jones, Lauren Bacall, Leonardo DiCaprio and Beyoncé, to name but a few. However, the hotel's impressive roll call of celebrity names isn't the only reason you should make the Byblos your port of call when holidaying in Saint-Tropez. 1. Walden Bello’s arrest an act of political repression, says Ka Leody
Photo Courtesy of Ka Leody De Guzman Facebook Page MANILA, Philippines — Labor leader and former presidential candidate Leody de Guzman on Monday blasted the administration for arresting his former running mate, Walden Bello, calling it an act of political persecution. “Hindi kailanman magiging makatwiran ang kasong cyberlibel laban kay Walden Bello dahil malinaw na ang motibasyon sa likuran nito ay pampulitikang panunupil,” said De Guzman in a statement. (The cyberlibel case against Walden Bello will never be justified because it is clear that the motivation behind it is political repression.) “Panunupil laban sa kritiko, pati na rin sa lahat ng kritikal sa kanilang administrasyon,” he added. (Repression against the critic and all those who are critical of their administration.) De Guzman then called on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to revoke the warrant against Bello, and also called on lawmakers to decriminalize libel. The Launch Of HBO Max Had Minimal Effect On Q2 Due To Marketing Missteps
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The positive spin that AT&T T put on the launch of HBO Max does not reflect the reality of the Q2 results. On Thursday the CEO of AT&T, John T. Stankey, stated that, “HBO Max had a strong launch, on track to hit its targets we laid out for you last fall,” and that the launch was “flawless.” Perhaps the company lowballed expectations, but the results also reek of missed opportunities. While the report touts that HBO Max gained 4.1 million subscribers in one month, it barely slowed the bleed experienced by the traditional HBO. Combined, the traditional HBO and HBO Max finished the quarter with 36.3 million U.S. subscribers, up only 1.7 million (4.9%) from the 34.6 million at the end of 2019. The 4.1 million new subscribers all but vanished by the decline in cable and satellite subscribers. Worse, operating revenue fell for the combined HBO by 3.2% for the six-month ending. While AT&T states that HBO Max is … [Read more...] about The Launch Of HBO Max Had Minimal Effect On Q2 Due To Marketing Missteps
Ghislaine Maxwell Sentenced To 20 Years Over Sex Trafficking
(CTN News) – A court sentenced Ghislaine Maxwell for her role in recruiting, trafficking, and exploiting underage girls on behalf of Jeffrey Epstein has been handed down. Earlier this week , Judge Alison Nathan handed down the sentence after slamming the ‘heinous and predatory’ behavior that resulted in her preying on girls as young as 14 with Jeffrey Epstein while they were still teenagers. Manhattan US Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement that today’s sentence holds Ghislaine Maxwell responsible for the heinous crimes she committed against children. In this sentence, the message is clear: no one is above the law, and justice cannot be delayed. The use of a substantial sentence will send an unmistakable message to those who are involved in the sexual abuse and human trafficking of underage victims that they will be held accountable.’ According to the rule of law, and this court is in agreement with this, no matter if you are rich, powerful, or totally … [Read more...] about Ghislaine Maxwell Sentenced To 20 Years Over Sex Trafficking
Father, son get life for hate crime in Ahmaud Arbery’s death
By RUSS BYNUM BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — The white father and son convicted of murder in Ahmaud Arbery’s fatal shooting after they chased him through a Georgia neighborhood were sentenced Monday to life in prison for committing a federal hate crime. A U.S. District Court judge sentenced Travis McMichael and his father Greg McMichael, 66, in Brunswick. Both were previously sentenced to life without parole in a state court for Arbery’s murder. A federal jury in February convicted Greg McMichael, Travis McMichael and neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan of violating Arbery’s civil rights, concluding they targeted him because he was Black. All three were also found guilty of attempted kidnapping, and the McMichaels were convicted of using guns in the commission of a violent crime. The McMichaels armed themselves with guns and used a pickup truck to chase Arbery after the 25-year-old ran past their home on Feb. 23, 2020. Bryan joined the pursuit in his own truck and recorded cellphone … [Read more...] about Father, son get life for hate crime in Ahmaud Arbery’s death
NYT Gaslights On The Murder Crisis
New York Times writer German Lopez suggested readers should be optimistic about a 4% decline in murders over the past year after the murder rate rose nearly 40% in the years prior. The spike in violence in recent years was triggered by COVID-19 policies including school closures and shutting down social services, as well as by less effective policing in the wake of George Floyd’s death, according to the NYT, and distance from these events could drive a downward trend in violence. But the murder rate is still significantly higher than it was prior to 2020 after surging nearly 30% that year. The media’s reluctance to report the 4% decline in murders shows a bias toward bad news that makes Americans think crime is worse than it really is, Lopez argued, adding that this bias contributes to voters favoring stronger criminal justice policies. Lopez also speculated that the media’s emphasis on crime could make Americans think criminal justice reform was causing a spike in crime, which … [Read more...] about NYT Gaslights On The Murder Crisis
Newly Released Photos Allegedly Show Documents Trump Threw In Toilets
Newly released photos allegedly showing pieces of paper in toilets may support prior reporting that former President Donald Trump sought to destroy Oval Office records. The two photos were published in Axios Monday and will appear in New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman’s forthcoming book “Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America.” The photos, which were obtained by Haberman from alleged White House sources, are purportedly document pieces from the White House and also “an overseas trip.” “You have to be pretty desperate to sell books if pictures of paper in a toilet bowl is part of your promotional plan,” Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich told Axios. “We know … there’s enough people willing to fabricate stories like this in order to impress the media class — a media class who is willing to run with anything, as long as it anti-Trump.” White House staffers would occasionally find torn up pieces of printed paper clogging up toilets, according to … [Read more...] about Newly Released Photos Allegedly Show Documents Trump Threw In Toilets
Could Overlooked Factors Make The JetBlue/Spirit Merger A Success?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin So far, the announced $3.8 billion merger agreement between JetBlue and Spirit Airline s has not set the airline world on fire. The threat of the Department of Justice killing the deal because of competitive issues, along with the disastrous performance of all the airlines (more than 100,000 flights cancelled as of July 16) are leading concerns. Wall Street seems underwhelmed. JetBlue stock traded around $8.30 a share on August 1 when the deal was announced. It closed out the week at $8.68, near the bottom of its 52-week range of $7.87 to $16.64. To add insult to injury, prominent Wall Street airline industry analyst Helane Becker of Cowen reduced her price target for Jet Blue, from $14 to $10. Bank of America Securities kept a Hold rating on JetBlue witha price target of $10. Analyst consensus was a Hold with an average price target of $8.75, a seven-cent gain from today’s levels. Ouch. But could factors like … [Read more...] about Could Overlooked Factors Make The JetBlue/Spirit Merger A Success?
JetBlue Wins Battle For Spirit Airlines, Now In Top 5 U.S. Airlines
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin JetBlue and Spirit Airlines announced a merger, really the acquisition of Spirit by JetBlue, this week. The purchase price is $3.8 billion, with each Spirit shareholder to receive $33.50 per share. If the deal goes through (the U.S. Justice Department can say no) JetBlue will join a new “Big 5” of U.S. airlines. The news comes one day after Frontier Airlines, Spirit’s former suitor, terminated its bid for the airline. That concluded a love triangle….err, bidding war…that began with Frontier and Spirit first announcing a merger in February 2022. “Smells like merger Spirit,” wrote Helane Becker, Managing Director Industrials & Airlines & Airfreight Consumer at Cowen Inc, summing up the soap opera with a nod to Nirvana. “Spirit and Frontier agreed to merge in February. In April, JetBlue flew in with a better offer. Spirit continued to defend its decision to go with Frontier, assuming the transaction would receive … [Read more...] about JetBlue Wins Battle For Spirit Airlines, Now In Top 5 U.S. Airlines
