Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Just like economists telling the general public about impending doom or delight, analysts for any given industry base their projections upon the intentionally misleading information they are fed by corporate investor relations teams, the analyst’s personal optimism bias or a host of other human noise. Therein, their skewed, semi-supported opinions become hearsay evidence (which should not be admissible in our individual courts), and then gets further sensationalized by news outlets seeking attention, e.g. “ 3 in 4 Economists Predict A Recession By 2021 .”). But for those interested in avoiding “fake news” for the overall economy there is another option: seek out objective, leading indicators within that local market akin to the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield, consumer confidence and home sales for the U.S. market. Until now, though, there haven’t been leading indicators for major markets such as the automotive industry. … [Read more...] about Maybe The Best Prediction Of Auto Sales Comes From Real-Time Data

COVID Outbreak in Beijing Prompts Panic Buying and Lockdown Fears
Representative Image Families in Beijing rushed to stock up on food. Supermarkets stayed open late. Residents endured long lines for mandatory testing. China’s stock markets plunged. A fresh coronavirus outbreak in China’s capital has raised concerns that Beijing could become, after Shanghai, the next Chinese megacity to put life on hold to contain the spread of the omicron variant. The central government has leaned heavily on lockdowns despite their high social and economic costs, in pursuit of Communist Party leader Xi Jinping’s “zero-COVID” strategy of eliminating infections. On Monday, the Beijing government said 70 coronavirus cases had been found in Beijing since Friday. Nearly two-thirds have been in the district of Chaoyang, which ordered all 3.5 million residents to take three PCR tests over the next five days. In other cities, mass testing in response to initial coronavirus cases has sometimes been a prelude to stringent lockdowns, like the four-week one in … [Read more...] about COVID Outbreak in Beijing Prompts Panic Buying and Lockdown Fears
UK to roll out next phase of booster vaccines from early September
Representative image (AFP) The UK's National Health Service (NHS) said on Thursday that it will start rolling out the next phase of booster vaccines to protect against COVID-19 from early next month, with the new bivalent Moderna jab targeting the original and Omicron strains to be used based on availability. Following updated advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) earlier this week, the NHS said it has set out plans for the next phase of the COVID-19 vaccination programme to begin from September 5. NHS staff will begin vaccinating care home residents and people who are housebound in the first tranche, to be rolled out to others based on age group later. "The NHS was the first healthcare system in the world to deliver a COVID-19 vaccine outside of clinical trials, and will now be the first to deliver the new, variant-busting vaccine when the rollout begins at the start of September, said NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard. "Our fantastic NHS … [Read more...] about UK to roll out next phase of booster vaccines from early September
Going Back to School with Stock Market Fundamentals
Make that four weeks in a row of gains for the U.S. stock market, as the rally has become undeniable. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both climbed more than 3% last week, with the the Dow up 2.9%. The S&P 500 has now climbed 15% from its lows in mid-June, while the Nasdaq has clawed back 20% since then. That could technically be described as a new bull market for the index. A 20% retracement from a recent low fits the bill—or the bull—but there are a lot of opinions about that. But we can't deny the strength of the rally, especially when we dig into the charts. The average stock in the Nasdaq Composite index is up 34% from its lows. Remember, just a few months ago, we were talking about the average Nasdaq stock being down 50% from its highs. The pendulum has swung back in a big way. Across the market, the breadth thrust has been pretty impressive. And no, that's not a swimming stroke. The breath trust indicator is a technical indicator used to ascertain market momentum … [Read more...] about Going Back to School with Stock Market Fundamentals
“If I Ever Got Dementia, I’d Be Outta Here”
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Having heard this many times, I know it’s common for folks to say, “I’d off myself” or “I’d check out”. There seems to be a belief that if we ever did develop this sad disease, we would find a way to eliminate ourselves from it. That we would never want to lose our minds is probably a universal desire. But is it realistic that we could just stop living if we did develop dementia? The truth is that dementia in any form, Alzheimer’s disease being the most common, has a gradual onset. People who are in the early stages of the disease often do not realize that they have any impairment at all. “I feel fine” they say. Physically, they may be otherwise fine, but their brains are not. And reasoning, planning, and looking ahead are functions of that brain that is losing ground. There is no clear marker for when one can definitely say, this is the moment I got dementia. It doesn’t work that way. A frequent reason people seek advice … [Read more...] about “If I Ever Got Dementia, I’d Be Outta Here”
Phuket taxi drivers: Do as the Borneo taxi drivers do
PHUKET: The world renowned tourist destination of Borneo is without a doubt full of wonders: wild orangutans, the rare proboscis monkey, “head houses” with plenty of human skulls to go around, schools of hammerhead sharks and incredibly friendly taxi drivers. Flying half way around the world to remote Malaysia Borneo isn’t worth the trip only to witness the honest, fixed-rate taxi drivers at work, but it’s certainly something to reminisce about upon returning to Phuket and getting involved in a taxi transaction, particularly one at Phuket International Airport. Unlike the chain smoking taxi drivers who often greet visitors at Phuket Airport with dress shirts unbuttoned and attitudes meant to establish some fictional level of dominance, the drivers in Borneo are well dressed and incredibly polite. More notably, however, is their genuine, non-threatening interest in their passengers. This is not to be mistaken for the kind of “interest” that led Phuket taxi driver Paitoon Kruain … [Read more...] about Phuket taxi drivers: Do as the Borneo taxi drivers do

Women-Only Coworking Spaces Are Having a Huge Moment. Here’s Why They’re Here to Stay.
Working from home certainly has its perks; but in the past few years, coworking spaces have become a seriously desirable alternative. My own company Masthead Media is based out of a coworking space, and we love the flexibility it offers us (our employees can work from any of its 90+ locations around the world). Beyond location independence, shared offices deliver valuable business resources, networking opportunities, and -- perhaps most enticingly -- a place to work that requires you to change out of your PJs. Despite the benefits, many female entrepreneurs weren't sold on their shared environments--perhaps because so many of the spaces were dominated by men. Enter: women-only coworking spaces. This trend-within-a-trend has been picking up serious steam, with new offices popping up all over the U.S. (and the world). In the #MeToo era, when conversations surrounding workplace harassment continue to take center stage, these hubs aim to offer a more safe and … [Read more...] about Women-Only Coworking Spaces Are Having a Huge Moment.
