Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Finland will apply for NATO membership, the country’s leaders confirmed Sunday, ending decades of neutrality in a move Russia has condemned as “wrong”—but Russian President Vladimir Putin seemed to take the news calmly, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said . Key Facts Niinistö and other officials prepared a report on Finland’s planned application to NATO that Finland intends to submit after running it by parliament. Finland has remained neutral in conflicts between larger nations since 1948, when it signed a treaty with the Soviet Union prohibiting either country from joining a military alliance against the other. In a Saturday phone call with Niinistö, Putin warned applying to NATO would be “wrong” because “there are no threats to Finland’s security,” and the move could harm relations between the two countries, the Kremlin said. Here’s the best (legal) site for free e-books, music, and movies

So, I figured that instead of sending you to the far corners of the internet for all your free content needs, I could just direct you a single convenient destination instead. You and I are both busy people, so let’s get straight to it, shall we? Hoopla That’s the site: Hoopla . What’s the catch? There are three. advertisement advertisement First, you’ll need a library card. That part is not all that hard. Second, your library must be a Hoopla partner. That doesn’t seem super hard, either. I live in a smallish town, and our library works with Hoopla. You can check this map to see if your library is on board. Ready to join the Great Resignation? Here’s how to avoid a disappointing job switch
There’s a lot of conversation around the “ Great Resignation ” as employers are losing talent to other companies that boast higher pay, cool perks, flexible work, sign-on incentives, and professional growth opportunities. It’s an interesting phenomena, but we don’t speak enough to the other side of the coin, something called the “Great Regret” or the “Big Mistake”—where an employee leaves one company for another believing the grass to be greener, and it turns out to be, in fact, worse than where they left. advertisement advertisement Early in my career, I had a Great Regret moment, back in 2008, where I left a job for more money and what seemed to be an amazing opportunity. From day one of my new job, I immediately had negative, early indicators about what was to come. It was a terrible six months in a role punctuated with a culture of high turnover, low morale, scandals, and toxic leadership. I deeply regretted my decision to leave my prior company … [Read more...] about Ready to join the Great Resignation? Here’s how to avoid a disappointing job switch
After Buffalo shooting video spreads, social platforms face questions
In March 2019, before a gunman murdered 51 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, he went live on Facebook to broadcast his attack. In October of that year, a man in Germany broadcast his own mass shooting live on Twitch, the Amazon-owned livestreaming site popular with gamers. On Saturday, a gunman in Buffalo, New York, mounted a camera to his helmet and livestreamed on Twitch as he killed 10 people and injured three more at a grocery store in what authorities said was a racist attack. In a manifesto posted online, Payton S. Gendron, the 18-year-old whom authorities identified as the shooter, wrote that he had been inspired by the Christchurch gunman and others. Twitch said it reacted swiftly to take down the video of the Buffalo shooting, removing the stream within two minutes of the start of the violence. But two minutes was enough time for the video to be shared elsewhere. By Sunday, recordings of the video had circulated widely on other social platforms, … [Read more...] about After Buffalo shooting video spreads, social platforms face questions
Beyond Moral Support: How Two International Startups Are Bringing Clever Aid To The People Of Ukraine
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When crisis strikes, we tend to look to our leaders for what we can do to help. Right now, as so much of the world watches in horror at the invasion of Ukraine, many of us have fretted from afar about what we can do to help. Impressively, business leaders outside of Ukraine has leapt into action. Companies I admire like A.Team , for example, were quick to launch social media fundraising campaigns. Many others have splashed “We stand with Ukraine” on their home pages and social accounts. And while that’s helpful, I’ve been impressed by two particularly inspiring startup companies that are leveraging their unique business propositions to make a difference—beyond moral and simple financial support: Who’s Helping The Babies In Ukraine? Embrace Global. According to Embrace Global , 260,000 women were pregnant in Ukraine when the war started. “Over 1,000 women are giving birth in Ukraine every day,” says Jane … [Read more...] about Beyond Moral Support: How Two International Startups Are Bringing Clever Aid To The People Of Ukraine

Dissection by TikTok: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard trial posts are making accidental influencers out of some, targets out of others
(CNN) TikTok posts about actor Johnny Depp's defamation trial against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, have turned a stay-at-home mom based in Scotland into an accidental influencer. Or, perhaps more aptly, a DeppTok influencer. Sophie Doggett, whose TikTok was previously populated by videos on everyday things such as herself or her pets, posted to her TikTok account on April 25 a clip of Heard's lawyer asking a question of a witness and then immediately objecting to the response. It is one of many moments in the trial that has been seized upon by people like Doggett, as clips of testimony and references to the case have pervaded TikTok in a way that no trial has before. That's partly because the proceeding, set to resume Monday, is being livestreamed during the age of TikTok, and also because of the high-profile celebrities the case involves. Doggett, who paired the clip to playful music, said she gained 30,000 followers seemingly overnight from the post which has, to date, … [Read more...] about Dissection by TikTok: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard trial posts are making accidental influencers out of some, targets out of others
