Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin By Meredith Bryan Scan any resume, and take note of what pops: job titles, company names, college degrees. But in today’s competitive labor market, businesses need workers with the right skills to do the job, not workers who’ve negotiated prestige titles that can mean different things at different organizations. Out-of-date job titles and requirements only serve to limit applicant pools in a moment when hiring managers are striving to attract and retain diverse, high-quality talent. Instead, recent research shows that a candidate’s skills are 5x more predictive of their job performance than hiring for education. “The future of work is all based on skills,” says Joseph Hanna, chief product officer at Magnit, a leading integrated workforce management platform. Innovative companies like Magnit are leveraging data and new technologies to facilitate this broader shift toward skills-based hiring, which will … [Read more...] about Forget Job Titles: 7 Reasons To Take A Skills-Based Approach To Hiring Talent

Bitcoin ‘Maximalist’ Saylor Makes Crypto His Only Job
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Michael Saylor’s new job looks a lot like his old job: adding bitcoin to the balance sheet of his business-software company with religious fervor. “I'm a bitcoin maximalist, I happen to believe that bitcoin is an instrument of economic empowerment, it'll be beneficial to eight billion people,” Saylor told Forbes in an interview. “I also happen to believe that bitcoin is unique,” he continues, because of “the Immaculate Conception, decentralization, and its commodity status. All of these things make it the superior asset in the space.” The Immaculate Conception he means is the founding of bitcoin, as explained in a 2008 white paper by one or more people using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Saylor stated that bitcoin is the only crypto asset which is truly decentralized and without an issuer. He backs bitcoin as a corporate investment in part because he believes there is regulatory agreement among U.S. regulators that bitcoin … [Read more...] about Bitcoin ‘Maximalist’ Saylor Makes Crypto His Only Job
‘The Glory’ Is Netflix’s New Sleeper Korean Megahit You Need To Watch
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin While it’s not getting nearly the same headlines as Squid Game, Netflix absolutely has a new Korean superhit on its hands with The Glory, a revenge thriller that recently wrapped up its 16 episode first season run after airing in two parts. I’ve been watching it over the last few days, and while I’ve just finally seen it drop out of the Netflix top 10 list in the US entirely (Wednesday is back in it?), looking at the numbers, it has performed extraordinarily well globally. The last numbers Netflix published just over a week ago show The Glory with 123.5 million hours viewed that week. And it was 124.4 million hours the week before that. It’s dwarfing English shows over the same period like You season 4 (64 million hours) and Shadow and Bone season 2 (50.4 million hours). The Korean revenge drama follows a young woman, Dong-Eun, who was bullied and badly scarred in high school by a group of friends. That friend … [Read more...] about ‘The Glory’ Is Netflix’s New Sleeper Korean Megahit You Need To Watch
Don’t Make A Mess Out Of The Texas Citizens Participation Act
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Texas legislature is considering a proposed amendment to the Texas Citizens Participation Act (TCPA), which is the Texas Anti-SLAPP law and roughly the equivalent to the Uniform Public Participation Act (UPEPA) which is in the process of being adopted nationwide. Because the proposed amendment has the potential to create more problems than it solves, and in fact may create a mess of things, some analysis is in order. The TCPA is found at Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code § 27.001, et seq . The TCPA basically provides that if one party files an action some sort of action which infringes upon certain constitutional rights of another party, that second party (movant) may file a motion to dismiss the action of the first party (respondent) in certain circumstances. I will not go into the entire operation of the TCPA, but will instead here focus upon only the part that is relevant to the proposed amendment. If … [Read more...] about Don’t Make A Mess Out Of The Texas Citizens Participation Act
America’s Leadership In Emerging Technologies At Stake Without A National Talent Strategy
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In an era where artificial intelligence is reshaping the playing field, OpenAI's latest breakthroughs with ChatGPT and GPT-4 signal another milestone. AI technology has the potential to revolutionize a variety of industries, spanning from manufacturing to agriculture, by delivering cross-cutting benefits. Yet as China's Baidu BIDU releases their own AI counterpart (ERNIE Bot), America faces a shifting landscape in global competition for emerging technologies. Though ERNIE Bot appears to be inferior to the models from OpenAI, the tables may turn in the near future. The fear of one day ceding ground to malicious actors like the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)—who seek to upend the international rules-based order—calls for a national talent strategy that encompasses both domestic and foreign-born human assets to fortify American leadership in these technologies. Nearly two weeks ago, the Reagan Institute released its 2023 … [Read more...] about America’s Leadership In Emerging Technologies At Stake Without A National Talent Strategy
MSNBC’s Alex Wagner: ‘I Feel Great About The Road That Lies Ahead’
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It’s been more than six months since Alex Wagner Tonight debuted on MSNBC, as Alex Wagner took over the 9 p.m. ET hour that had been defined for 14 years by Rachel Maddow, the network’s highest-rated prime time host. The Rachel Maddow Show was regularly the only cable news show capable of challenging long time ratings leader Fox News Channel. “There’s been a period of adjustment,” Wagner told me, noting that viewers had to adjust not just to a new show, but also to the unusual arrangement of The Rachel Maddow Show continuing on Monday nights while Alex Wagner Tonight aired the rest of the week. “I think MSNBC gave me an extraordinarily beautiful amount of room to make the show my own and to figure out what it was all about.” It was MSNBC President Rashida Jones who both selected Wagner for the role and the freedom to experiment, saying last year that “we’re giving her the time and space to grow.” That support was … [Read more...] about MSNBC’s Alex Wagner: ‘I Feel Great About The Road That Lies Ahead’
Black Couple’s Comic Book Company Creates Characters Who Look Like Them—And Their Kids
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When Manuel and Geiszel Godoy got married 14 years ago and had kids, they started paying to attention to a jarring phenomenon: They couldn’t find any comic books for their children with characters who looked like them. But Manuel and Geiszel decided not to simply accept the situation. Instead, seven years ago, they formed Black Sands Entertainment , a Delaware-based company that produces comic books and graphic novels for young readers in the Black community. They feature Black characters, telling stories of ancient Africa. “I didn’t want to constantly see only Hollywood versions of the ancient cultures of Africa,” says Manuel. ADVERTISEMENT Now, with $3 million in revenue, the company is focused on a strategy to boost growth, primarily through sales to schools. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Beena Ammanath - Global Deloitte AI Institute Leader, Founder of Humans For AI and Author "Trustworthy AI." Statistically speaking, your organization is likely already using artificial intelligence, and you probably have full-scale deployment of at least three AI applications. A recent survey revealed as much, as well as that nearly every business leader sees AI as critical to business success over the next five years. AI may be transforming business and impacting the bottom line, but do business leaders understand how AI works, its applications and the potential risks? They need to.
