Google Search is rolling out its long-awaited updates to snippets

August 11, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Google is rolling out changes to its featured snippets . While that text box at the top of a Google search page can be helpful, it’s also been known to spread misinformation. advertisement The tech giant announced Thursday it was rolling out its latest AI model , called the multitask unified model, in an attempt to deliver more accurate information. Google said that the model can now understand the notion of consensus, which in this case is when multiple high-quality sources all agree on the same fact. The algorithm is supposed to be able to check snippet callouts (when the words above the featured snippet are in a larger font) against other sources on the web to see if there’s a general consensus, even if they use different words or concepts to explain the same thing. There’s also the separate concern of when Google snippets information that may not be the most helpful to an answer. The search team highlighted an example that didn’t have an answer: “When did … [Read more...] about Google Search is rolling out its long-awaited updates to snippets

Unseal warrant for Mar-a-Lago search, AG Garland asks

August 11, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

By ERIC TUCKER and MICHAEL BALSAMO WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department is asking a federal court to unseal the warrant the FBI used to search the Mar-a-Lago estate of former President Donald Trump, Attorney General Merrick Garland said Thursday, acknowledging extraordinary public interest in the case about classified records. The request is striking because such documents traditionally remain sealed during a pending investigation. But the Justice Department appeared to recognize that its silence since the search had created a vacuum for bitter verbal attacks by Trump and his allies and Garland wanted to provide the FBI’s side for what led to the action. “The public’s clear and powerful interest in understanding what occurred under these circumstances weighs heavily in favor of unsealing,” said a motion filed in federal court in Florida on Thursday seeking the unsealing. Should the warrant be released — the request is now with the judge, and Trump can object — it could … [Read more...] about Unseal warrant for Mar-a-Lago search, AG Garland asks

US confirms search of Trump’s home, asks court to unseal warrant

August 12, 2022 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

FILE PHOTO: Former U.S. President Donald Trump departs Trump Tower for a deposition two days after FBI agents raided his Mar-a-Lago Palm Beach home, in New York City, U.S., August 10, 2022. REUTERS/David ‘Dee’ Delgado/File Photo WASHINGTON — The U.S. Justice Department asked a judge on Thursday to make public the warrant that authorized an FBI search of Donald Trump’s Florida home, after the former president attacked the search as an act of political retribution. Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed for the first time that agents had searched Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach. The search is part of an investigation into whether he illegally removed records from the White House as he was leaving office. Garland, the nation’s top law enforcement official, said he had personally approved the decision to order the search. His confirmation was highly unusual since U.S. law enforcement typically does not discuss ongoing investigations. But it came after Trump himself … [Read more...] about US confirms search of Trump’s home, asks court to unseal warrant

Mar-A-Lago Is Looking To Hire 91 Foreign Workers This Year

August 10, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin M ar-a-Lago, former president Donald Trump’s private club-cum-legal residence at the center of an investigation into his handling of classified government documents, has relied on temporary foreign workers to keep the sprawling estate humming. Last year, the Trump Organization sought 87 foreign workers for the Palm Beach property, up from 78 a few years earlier. It’s not clear how many were hired but no doubt at least some likely had backstage access to political theater (maybe even scraps of presidential records floating in toilets ). On Monday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided Mar-a-Lago, with one of Trump’s attorneys confirming the agency’s search related to an investigation into his handling of classified documents. This year, as the labor market is even tighter, with just 2.8% unemployment, Mar-a-Lago is looking to bring on 91 temporary foreign workers . (That previously unreported number … [Read more...] about Mar-A-Lago Is Looking To Hire 91 Foreign Workers This Year

Peak inflation bet lifts stocks, US dollar in doldrums

August 11, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A LONDON (Aug 11): Global shares edged higher on Thursday as investors bet on the pace of interest rate hikes slowing after data pointed to inflation peaking, leaving the US dollar struggling after its biggest fall in five months. Oil prices languished below US$100 a barrel in search of direction, while better-than-expected earnings from Zurich lifted the insurer's shares. Figures on Wednesday showed that US consumer prices were unchanged in July compared with June, a two-year rise in inflation stopped in its tracks by a drop in gasoline prices. Investors now turn to US producer prices data, along with the latest jobless claims numbers, ahead of Wall Street's open. Michael Hewson, chief markets analyst at CMC Markets, said peaking inflation could mean less aggressive interest rate hikes from the US Federal Reserve when it meets in September. The Bank of England and European Central Bank also meet next month. "Markets are getting ahead of themselves, and … [Read more...] about Peak inflation bet lifts stocks, US dollar in doldrums

Cover Story: Investment winter hits SMEs

August 11, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on August 1, 2022 - August 07, 2022. - A + A Small and medium enterprises have put capital expenditure on hold despite the reopening of the economy BUSINESS activities in the country have been in full swing for several months now, after two years of pandemic-induced movement restrictions. Demand has been strong since borders reopened, but the rising cost of raw materials, global economic uncertainties and, more pressingly, labour shortages have impacted the business growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Usually, strong orders from clients mean that business owners will start thinking about making investments to meet the demand. However, at this point in time, very few SMEs are considering capital expenditure. “Many of our members are holding back on capital investment despite the pandemic seemingly coming to a tail end. Without certainty in our ability to deliver on orders, or for … [Read more...] about Cover Story: Investment winter hits SMEs

Surging inflation puts Asia’s deal-hunting bond buyers on hold

August 11, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (Aug 11): Investors looking to call the bottom in emerging Asian bonds may have to wait a little longer as inflation in the region shows few signs of peaking. The latest consumer-price gains data from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand surprised on the upside, signaling that cost pressures continue to outrun market forecasts. Shorter-dated yields, which are more sensitive to hawkish rate expectations, remain elevated as investors appear unconvinced that inflation has topped out for now. The stronger-than-expected inflation prints run counter to a prediction by Morgan Stanley’s analysts that cost pressures will peak this quarter as supply imbalances reverse. Last week’s robust American jobs report and continued hawkish signals from policy makers are likely to underpin bets for more US policy tightening, which would weigh on emerging Asian debt. “With the geopolitical situation remaining fluid, it is difficult to call for peak inflation with high … [Read more...] about Surging inflation puts Asia’s deal-hunting bond buyers on hold
