Career Progress Is A Cure For Inflation. Here Are 5 Keys To Upward Mobility

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As individuals, the inflation problem is largely out of our hands. The only way to solve it is by advancing your career—and your compensation. You can “beat” a higher cost of living by increasing the cost that you are financially able to bear. Of course, everyone wants to earn more money. But it’s easier said than done, and it can be unclear for people climbing the career ladder exactly how to increase take-home pay. The answer to the age-old “make more money” question begins with understanding what the people who search for and promote management talent are seeking. You need to realize what they are paying for in their decision-making process. Answering that question actually requires a bit of reverse engineering—starting with the profiles of people who have already climbed the ladder and modeling your own profile based on theirs. In the late 1990s, I published a book called Secrets From the Search Firm Files: What … [Read more...] about Career Progress Is A Cure For Inflation. Here Are 5 Keys To Upward Mobility

Five Key Criteria To Identify The Right Data And Analytics Project

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Founder and Managing Principal of DBP Institute . I help companies transform technology and data into a valuable business asset. Today, organizations of all types are looking at leveraging data and analytics (D&A) for improved business performance and outcomes. D&A can provide EBITDA (Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) increases of up to 25% according to a McKinsey report. Nine of the top ten innovative companies globally, as rated by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), are data firms. However, despite being data-rich and having high data analytics ambitions, the BCG report also notes many companies are poor in delivering business value from D&A projects and only a few achieve those ambitions. Statistically, only 20% of the D&A solutions deliver business outcomes and 87 percent of D&A projects never make it to production. The reasons for the poor dismal metrics on … [Read more...] about Five Key Criteria To Identify The Right Data And Analytics Project

“Software” Climate VCs And “Hardtech” Climate VCs Are Both Wrong

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Over the course of the past few months it’s becoming clear to me that venture capitalists investing into climate technologies are now decidedly split into two major camps: Those investing into hardware, or as they often will term it, “deep tech” innovations, and those investing into software. This is an interesting split, and you can see why each camp is doing what they’re doing. The “software” investors have a logical mandate for focusing in on this innovation area: It’s what venture capital has traditionally succeeded at. Venture capital is very expensive capital — I like to joke that it’s the most expensive form of available capital that won’t get your kneecaps broken. So if it’s so costly, it should be deployed only where the business model can absorb such expensive capital and scale quickly enough to achieve big outcomes. In other words, capital efficiency. Invest a little bit, and hopefully get a big outcome. … [Read more...] about “Software” Climate VCs And “Hardtech” Climate VCs Are Both Wrong

How To Navigate The Flawed Job Market

August 8, 2018 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Day 3: Get to know the job market. This post is part of Forbes’ Career Challenge: Get Job-Search Ready In 15 Days . In 1987, Sallie Krawcheck secured a coveted job in investment banking on Wall Street. Shortly after she started, the 1987 crash followed. She found herself in a job she hated, in a cut-throat work culture she hated and in a time of crisis that exacerbated the problem. “I knew I didn't like investment banking. I didn't get it. I didn't enjoy it. I didn't love the work,” she said in an interview with Business Insider. In 1990, realizing this wasn’t the career she wanted, she started at Columbia Business School. Her goal in business school was to get out of financial services and switch to the media industry. According to plan, she landed a summer internship at Time, Inc. She was thrilled and excited at the prospect of working there full-time once the internship converted into a job. At the end of the … [Read more...] about How To Navigate The Flawed Job Market

FTSE 100 Break Out Preempts Bank Of England Surrender To Inflation

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The U.K. financial system nearly broke this autumn when rising interest rates created a vicious circle of margin calls driving the stock market into free fall and with it a cycle of rising interest rates driving bond yields up causing further margin calls to the pension fund institutions. This kind of hidden danger is just what causes crashes. Pension funds had levered their government bond portfolios to the roof to reach for higher returns. Back in the day these same funds had been squeezed by the regulator out of stocks and into bonds so as not to add too much risk to their funds and get into exactly the vicious circle they now found themselves in by turning safe bonds into mountains of dangerous leverage. What irony! Well, not really. The thing is this, who is going to buy the bonds of a country up to its ears in debt with an out of whack fiscal deficit heading into a recession, let alone buy the bonds of a … [Read more...] about FTSE 100 Break Out Preempts Bank Of England Surrender To Inflation

Personality And Job Success: How To Separate The Method From The Madness

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Professor of IO Psychology. CEO of fitt , a multi-method digital talent platform. In my work leading talent assessments, one of the most frequent questions I get asked by organizations is, "What role does personality play in job success?" Whether I am conducting talent reviews for succession planning in a corporate environment, advising a company on a hiring decision or giving feedback coaching for leadership development, there is always a keen interest in understanding the personality makeup of a candidate and whether or not this will have an impact on performance in a role. At the risk of giving the standard psychologist rendition of “there is no right or wrong answer,” the honest response is: It depends. Personality assessment in work settings is nothing new. Used first by the military to gauge the battle readiness of soldiers, tools have evolved over time, become more sophisticated and branched into … [Read more...] about Personality And Job Success: How To Separate The Method From The Madness

What Women Need To Know About SECURE Act 2.0

February 3, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin What Women Need to Know About SECURE Act 2.0 On December 23, 2022, while most of the country was out of the office enjoying a nice holiday break, Congress passed an update to the retirement bill known as the SECURE Act, the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act (now referred to as SECURE Act 2.0). While the original SECURE Act, passed nearly three years prior in December 2019, had a net negative impact by eliminating the “stretch IRA” (the ability for a non-spouse beneficiary of a qualified retirement account to take distributions over their lifetime), SECURE Act 2.0 had an overall net positive impact, making numerous small changes to retirement plan savings rules in an effort to encourage Americans to save more for their retirement. In total, there are over 90 provisions in SECURE Act 2.0. Below, I highlight a few revisions that are particularly meaningful for women. Why focus on women, in … [Read more...] about What Women Need To Know About SECURE Act 2.0

Tesla Is Staring Down $267 Billion In Cash Firepower From The Global Automakers

March 20, 2018 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin With an equity market capitalization of $53 billion Tesla is not often characterized as a small company.  In the metrics that matter, however, Tesla is truly a minnow amongst the whales that dominate global auto production.  As the world’s automakers look to transform themselves from manufacturers and marketers of cars to providers of "mobility solutions" the need for investment is enormous.  Most mobility solutions are based on battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) which will eventually be capable of performing self-driving, thereby becoming autonomous vehicles (AVs.) This transition, like most, requires one material above all: capital.  That capital needs to be in liquid form, and that is where Tesla trails its rivals badly.  In the table below I present the amount of automotive (i.e. ex-financial services) cash sitting on balance sheets of the world's major global automakers; figures are as of the most recent reporting periods … [Read more...] about Tesla Is Staring Down $267 Billion In Cash Firepower From The Global Automakers
