After a decade in business, Stio , the Jackson Hole-based outdoor gear brand, decided to create its very first pair of shoes. Instead of creating a hiking or snow boot, it hired top shoe designer Kurtis Sakai to create a cozy pair of leather booties lined with wool and equipped with soles that have good traction. “We wanted you to be able to wear it all day, anywhere,” says Stephen Sullivan, Stio’s founder and CEO. “But the soft interior was a non-negotiable. It provides warmth and comfort.” Stio’s new “ Colter Boot ” captures the footwear zeitgeist of the moment. Right now, most of us are wearing some version of a fuzzy bunny slipper around the clock, in our new hybrid life that takes us in and out of the home. After years of pandemic living, our delicate feet are loathe to give up the soft embrace of cloud-like wool and shearling. Our love of exceedingly soft shoes began long before COVID-19 hit our shores, but the lockdown appears to have deepened our … [Read more...] about The quest to design the world’s softest shoe

No, your company is not your family
We are in the midst of a massive paradigm shift when it comes to how and why we work. The “always-on” tech mentality no longer fits into what employees want from their lives, especially as the Gen Z employee class grows. We’re happy to work more from home and spend time with our families. That creates a dissonance: Why does Big Tech insist on presenting itself as a big happy family? Why do we still have founder cults that embody working until you drop? Today’s layoffs are a harsh wake-up call that no, your company is not your “family.” Nor should it be. It’s time companies made the uncomfortable decision to reevaluate their identities and reconstruct their work, not family, values. We need to embrace uncomfortable truths about what role our companies play in the lives of our employees and customers. We shouldn’t be constructing values around a single person, cultural trend, or moment in time. Any company that’s been around for more than a few years needs to be … [Read more...] about No, your company is not your family

‘Free Speech Crisis’: Stanford Law School Spent Years Building Out Its Diversity, Equity And Inclusion Bureaucracy
Stanford Law School began rapidly increasing its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs in 2018 after approving recommendations from its working group. The law school’s website features a timeline detailing the work it has done to bolster DEI on campus, including increased attention to embedded DEI in its hiring, promotions and curriculum. Jonathan Butcher, Will Skillman fellow in education at The Heritage Foundation, told the Daily Caller News Foundation that private universities should have to justify that these programs produce “positive results.” Stanford Law School (SLS) has rapidly increased its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs over the past five years, according to its website. SLS made several reforms in 2018 at the request of a DEI working group made up of faculty, students and staff including the establishment of a Racial Justice Center, the inclusion of a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging session at first-year orientation, the … [Read more...] about ‘Free Speech Crisis’: Stanford Law School Spent Years Building Out Its Diversity, Equity And Inclusion Bureaucracy
Even in these times, smart startups can get funded. Here’s how
There was a moment last spring when startup founders across the globe experienced a sudden collective whiplash. It was the Great Venture Capital Reset of 2022, when fundraising activity screeched to a halt after running fast and hot for the longest bull market in VC history. Untold numbers of in-progress funding rounds sputtered in the process, and every startup that had planned to raise in the second half of 2022 found a very different market waiting for them. Just about every VC in my network reports a slowdown in the months since. As Masha Bucher, founder and general partner at Day One Ventures , puts it: “Priced rounds are so rare now that they sometimes get oversubscribed.” With two full quarters worth of data, we can now put numbers to the anecdotes. Peter Walker, head of insights at Carta , reports only 714 combined seed and Series A rounds in the fourth quarter of 2022—the first quarter in which Carta tracked fewer than 1,000 rounds since 2020. Data from … [Read more...] about Even in these times, smart startups can get funded. Here’s how
With Virtual Volunteer, Be My Eyes Bets Big On ChatGPT And Chatbots Redefining Accessible Software
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When I sat down with Microsoft’s Jenny Lay-Flurrie earlier this month , a hot topic of our conversation was the potential of AI-enhanced chatbots as an assistive technology. She shared a personal anecdote of her teenage daughter, who has autism and ADHD, using the new ChatGPT-powered Bing search engine to help her in recently writing an essay on why her school should offer sign language classes. These chatbots, Flurrie said, have the ability to alleviate points of friction associated with motor and cognitive load—especially for a neurodivergent person, where classic methods of research could prove unwieldy and overwhelming. “[AI chatbots] collate so much information for you very, very quickly. It can save a lot of time,” Flurrie told me of chatbots’ potential to transform accessibility for disabled people. “If you think about someone from a mobility perspective, you can get the right level of information at your fingertips … [Read more...] about With Virtual Volunteer, Be My Eyes Bets Big On ChatGPT And Chatbots Redefining Accessible Software
Johns And Waters In Triple Crown Form at The PPA Onyx Austin Open
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Professional Pickleball Association’s busy spring continued with the second of a back-to-back event pair of events. After last weekend’s Florida trip, the pros all flew to the Mecca of Pickleball in central Texas to compete at the Onyx Austin Showdown , held at The Hills Country Club Elevation Athletic Club facility in the western residential suburbs of the capital city. The talk ahead of the tournament was about paddle compliance, yet again, as some new issues related to paddle testing arose. The situation was not helped by the sports top player issuing a statement on social media that seemed to imply certain brands were not playing by the rules purposely. This added pressure added to the backdrop of the Austin competition. Let’s Recap the action. ———————— Men’s Pro Singles Recap: The top two seeds (Johns and Staksrud) both advanced to the title match without dropping a game. Nearly every other top … [Read more...] about Johns And Waters In Triple Crown Form at The PPA Onyx Austin Open

Law Prof To File Bar Complaint Against Stanford Students Who Heckled, Harassed Federal Judge
An elite university law professor intends to file a complaint with the bar admission authorities to advise against accepting any student who participated in a protest against Federal Judge Kyle Duncan earlier this month, according to an email obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation. John Banzhaf, professor of public interest law emeritus at George Washington University (GWU), wrote to Stanford Law School Dean Jenny Martinez on Monday to inform her of the complaint, the exchange read. The protesters heckled Duncan, who was invited to campus by the Federalist Society, during his March 9 speech and were encouraged by Stanford Law School Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Tirien Steinbach. (RELATED: ‘Free Speech Crisis’: Stanford Law School Spent Years Building Out Its Diversity, Equity And Inclusion Bureaucracy) The complaint will include video of the protest “so that bar officials can judge the students’ conduct for themselves,” according to the email. … [Read more...] about Law Prof To File Bar Complaint Against Stanford Students Who Heckled, Harassed Federal Judge
A race to ‘flex’: Why showing off wealth is a virtue in South Korea
In South Korea, image is everything and showing off wealth – or at to least be seen as rich – is a virtue, not a vice. PHOTO: REUTERS SEOUL – If you’ve got it, flaunt it. Or fake it till you make it. These seem to be the golden rules in South Korea, where image is everything and showing off wealth – or to at least be seen as rich – is a virtue, not a vice. The obsession with designer labels is so widely accepted that even middle school children wear them to class. My 13-year-old daughter recalls seeing the letters P-R-A-D-A on a classmate’s black loafers. Moncler is the winter coat of teenage choice in schools in more affluent districts, while bags range from MSGM and Marc Jacobs, to Burberry and Balenciaga. The flaunting extends to moms clad in designer garb and driving branded cars. Designer bags can be seen everywhere in the streets of Seoul, sometimes even in the hands of young, doting boyfriends. So I was hardly surprised when a recent Morgan Stanley report … [Read more...] about A race to ‘flex’: Why showing off wealth is a virtue in South Korea
