NEW YORK, United States - Jay-Z is officially hip-hop's first billionaire, Forbes declared Monday, founding his kingdom on entertainment but also reaping earnings from liquor, art, and real estate. The rapper born Shawn Carter, who grew up in one of Brooklyn's most notorious housing projects, "has accumulated a fortune that conservatively totals $1 billion, making him one of only a handful of entertainers to become a billionaire -- and the first hip-hop artist to do so," the magazine said in a new cover story. The house that Jay built includes stakes in Armand de Brignac champagne and D'Usse cognac -- worth $310 million and $100 million respectively -- as well as $220 million in cash and investments that includes a stake in Uber worth an estimated $70 million. The 49-year-old also boasts a $75 million music catalog, $75 million from the entertainment company Roc Nation, and $100 million from streaming service Tidal. In addition to his penthouse in New York's posh Tribeca neighborhood, … [Read more...] about Empire State of Mind: Jay-Z becomes hip-hop’s first billionaire
Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter has won the race to become the first billionaire in hip-hop, beating music moguls Sean P. Diddy Combs and Andre “Dr. Dre” Young to the threshold, according to a new cover story published in Forbes. This also makes Carter just the fifth African American in the country to reach this historic milestone. Forbes reports that Carter “has accumulated a fortune that conservatively totals $1 billion” thanks to his savvy business acumen and diverse portfolio of lucrative investments, acquisitions, and deals. “Jay-Z’s steadily growing kingdom is expansive, encompassing liquor, art, real estate (homes in Los Angeles, the Hamptons, Tribeca) and stakes in companies like Uber,” it reads. The publication then explains how they came to this conclusion, listing a breakdown of Carter’s major assets. “To calculate his net worth, we looked at the artist’s stakes in companies like Armand de … [Read more...] about Jay-Z Becomes Fifth Black Billionaire in the U.S.
Hip-hop mogul Jay Z has just been officially minted a billionaire, according to Forbes, joining the likes of Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Michael Bloomberg, Carlos Slim Helu, Mark Zuckerberg, and Kylie Jenner. While being a billionaire is an impressive accomplishment, Jay Z is also a member of an even smaller group of black billionaires, an even more elite group of American black billionaires, and is the first hip-hop artist to join those impressive ranks. In short, he runs this town now. Jay Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, grew up in a hard-knock life in Brooklyn’s Marcy housing projects. He famously worked as a drug dealer (can’t knock the hustle) before becoming a musician. He started his own label, Roc-A-Fella Records, to release his 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt. It was the first step in a growing collection of dead presidents that Forbes now conservatively estimates at $1 billion. Carter’s substantial assets include his own $75 … [Read more...] about Jay Z is now a billionaire: Here’s how he got there
