Colorado Gov. Jared Polis wants to use a windfall announced well after the election to pay for one of his major campaign promises — full-day kindergarten — he announced Tuesday. However, his plan met with quick pushback from Democrats on the General Assembly committee that writes the budget. “There was a huge shift due to our strong economy in the December forecast … ,” Budget Director Lauren Larson said during a media briefing Thursday. “Property tax revenues are filling the coffers of local governments to a higher level than was expected, reducing the burden on the state’s general fund to backfill the funding that was needed for K-12 education.” What that means is the state should keep about $274 million more in its 2019-20 budget than originally predicted, and Polis wants to spend about 80 percent of it on kindergarten. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis continued to fill crucial cabinet positions Wednesday, announcing four new appointees a day after his inauguration. Dan Gibbs, currently a Summit County commissioner, will be executive director of the Department of Natural Resources. Maj. Gen. Michael Loh will remain as adjutant general and executive director of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Jill Hunsaker Ryan, MPH, will be executive director for the Department of Public Health and Environment. She is a two-term Eagle County commissioner and previously managed Eagle County’s Public Health Agency. Dr. Theresa Szczurek will be executive director of the Governor’s Office of Information Technology and chief information officer. MONTREAL — Colorado Avalanche star center Nathan MacKinnon and coach Jared Bednar appear to have made peace.The two are playing down a dispute caught on camera on the bench Wednesday night in Calgary. They spoke Friday, a day before Colorado plays the Montreal Canadiens.MacKinnon seemed to be mouthing "Do your job" to Bednar toward the end of the Avalanche's 5-3 loss to the Flames, Colorado's eighth defeat in nine games.MacKinnon says he felt the team should have pulled the goalie earlier but acknowledges he mishandled things.
