ARAVINTHAN A MAN managed to recover the funds he lost to credit card fraud by pestering the customer service department of a bank in Malaysia every day for one whole month, Sin Chew Daily reported. The victim, whose name on Facebook is Justin Lim, claimed that his credit card was used twice to purchase goods in October 2021. Without having received a TAC code or a one-time password (OTP), Lim received a text message that his card was charged RM519.40. Realising that he had been a victim of credit card fraud, Lim immediately cancelled his card and reported the matter to the issuing bank’s customer service department. “Usually, banks will say they need six months to investigate after you have made a report. Only after they have ascertained that your card has been misused will they refund your money,” he said. PONTIAN: Police here are hunting for two suspects after a machete attack on a man at a restaurant in Benut town near here on Monday (Feb 14). Pontian OCPD Supt Mohammad Shofee Tayib said Benut police received a call about the incident at 3.20pm. He said policemen were deployed to the scene and interviewed witnesses there. “The 40-year victim suffered severe injuries on the right arm and was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment," said Supt Mohammad Shofee. He said according to witnesses, two men escaped in a white multi-purpose vehicle. “The number plate of the vehicle used (for the getaway) was fake," he added. MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Police in Somalia have announced a 33-hour curfew on the capital Mogadishu that will keep almost all residents at home during a presidential election by lawmakers on Sunday, in which incumbent leader Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed is seeking a second term. Police spokesperson Abdifatah Aden announced at a press conference on Saturday a full curfew in the city, covering both traffic and people, from Saturday at 9:00 PM (1800 GMT) until Monday at 6:00 AM. - A + A (May 14): US Federal Reserve (Fed) Bank of Cleveland president Loretta Mester backed raising interest rates by half percentage points in the central bank’s next two policy meetings in order to tamp down surging inflation. “Unless there are some big surprises, I expect it to be appropriate to raise the policy rate by another 50 basis points in each of our next two meetings,” Mester said on Friday (May 13) in prepared remarks for a virtual appearance at the International Research Forum on Monetary Policy. Fed central bankers raised interest rates by a half point in their meeting earlier this month and chair Jerome Powell told reporters that similar moves were on the table in their next two meetings in June and July.
