(CNN) The New York Police Department is cracking down on offenses that have become part of daily life in some neighborhoods: public consumption of alcohol, open-air marijuana sales and public urination. The goal is to combat relatively minor infractions that the nation's largest police department maintains lower the quality of life and foment the type of disorder that resulted in 30 shootings last weekend and Monday -- including a 7-year-old girl wounded in gang crossfire. In Detroit, the city's newly released plan to reduce violent crime over the summer refers to the association between "urban blight" and gun violence and vows greater enforcement of noise complaints and traffic offenses and keeping a close eye on vacant lots and buildings. In Miami Beach, city officials responded to what they say are "excessively large and unruly spring break crowds" by declaring a state of emergency and imposing a midnight to 6 a.m. curfew through Monday. Crypto world stabilises after rocky week shook stablecoins
- A + A HONG KONG/LONDON/NEW YORK (May 14): Cryptocurrencies steadied on Friday (May 13), with Bitcoin recovering from a 16-month low after a volatile week dominated by the collapse in value of TerraUSD, a so-called stablecoin. Crypto assets have been swept up in broad selling of risky investments on worries about high inflation and rising interest rates, but have started showing signs of settling. Although the near-term trajectory of the crypto market is challenging to predict, the worst may be over, said Juan Perez, a director of trading at Monex USA in Washington. "Perhaps now that all the obstacles to global growth along with monetary tightening are clear, perhaps we will start seeing swings upwards," he said. Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency by market value, last rose 4.85% to US$29,925 (about RM131,610.15), rebounding from a December 2020 low of US$25,400 which it hit on Thursday. Although it hit a high of just under US$31,000 on Friday, Bitcoin … [Read more...] about Crypto world stabilises after rocky week shook stablecoins
Inside Redesign Health’s Bid To Change The Healthcare Innovation Cycle
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Often misunderstood, Redesign Health’s model is a very different way to create, fund and launch healthcare startups, but will it pay off over the long term? Typically, a story starts with what a company is. In the case of Redesign Health , perhaps it’s best to start with what it isn’t. Redesign Health is not a venture capital (VC) firm, despite the fact that it's often listed among other VCs in funding press releases . It’s not a startup studio or accelerator, even though it’s named as a partner in building many early-stage healthcare companies. Instead, Redesign Health styles itself as “a company that powers innovation in healthcare by developing technologies, tools, and insights that lower the barriers to change across the industry.” What does that mean? After conversations with Redesign Health CEO Brett Shaheen, in addition to other entrepreneurs in the Redesign Health family, the answer is seemingly … [Read more...] about Inside Redesign Health’s Bid To Change The Healthcare Innovation Cycle
$100,000 Wine Gamble Turned Into 100-Point Scores From Top Wine Critics
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sitting on the back porch drinking a beautiful glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, the sunset painted the sky with colors of saffron and gold; there, a veteran wine producer in Napa Valley took in the recent catastrophe that destroyed so much of his community while he contemplated the luck of no loss of human life in the disaster, and less importantly, that five of his best barrels of wine survived. All of a sudden the song "That Old Black Magic" started to play in his head, and he knew "Black Magic" would be the perfect name for those special barrels of wine as it was a "black moment" for his winery as they lost a lot of wine yet at the same time those barrels have an "aura of real magic". That moment happened after the 2014 massive 6.0-magnitude Napa Valley earthquake that violently destroyed wineries, structures and catapulted people out of their beds around 3 am. The victims were randomly selected as "some wineries lost … [Read more...] about $100,000 Wine Gamble Turned Into 100-Point Scores From Top Wine Critics

Signs of market bottom elude investors after steep sell-off
- A + A NEW YORK (May 14): Investors are studying an array of indicators for clues about how much further a brutal slide in US stocks could run, with some signs suggesting the tumble in equities may not be over. The S&P 500 extended its decline to nearly 20% from January’s record peak on Thursday before an end-of-week bounce, approaching the cusp of a bear market amid concerns that persistently high inflation will prompt more aggressive US Federal Reserve (Fed) interest rate increases that could undermine the economy. Declines have been even steeper in the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite, which is down 24.5% year-to-date. Despite those losses, many widely followed indicators do not yet show the pervasive panic, supercharged volatility and outright pessimism that have emerged in past market bottoms, a potentially worrisome signal for those looking to step in and buy on the cheap after the most recent sell-off of stocks. Indeed, stocks ripped higher on Friday (May … [Read more...] about Signs of market bottom elude investors after steep sell-off
Russian court extends US basketball player Griner’s detention
- A + A (May 14): A Russian court on Friday (May 13) extended the pre-trial detention of US professional basketball player Brittney Griner by one month, her lawyer told Reuters . Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, was arrested in February at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, allegedly in possession of cannabis-infused vaporiser cartridges. The Russian customs service said at the time that the alleged offence could carry a five to 10-year jail term. The US State Department has said that the 31-year-old was wrongfully detained, and has assigned diplomats to work for her release. A US Embassy consular officer attended Friday's hearing and spoke to Griner, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said. "The officer was able to confirm that Brittney Griner is doing as well as can be expected under what can only be described as exceedingly difficult circumstances," Price said. Washington and Moscow have kept diplomatic channels open since Russia's Feb 24 … [Read more...] about Russian court extends US basketball player Griner’s detention
Goldman Sachs officials reach US$79.5m shareholder settlement over 1MDB scandal
- A + A NEW YORK (May 14): Goldman Sachs Group Inc officers and directors reached a US$79.5 million (about RM349.64 million) settlement to resolve shareholder claims that their poor oversight contributed to the bank being enmeshed in the looting scandal at 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB). A preliminary settlement of the so-called shareholder derivative lawsuit was filed on Friday (May 13) in the Manhattan Federal Court, and requires approval by US District Judge Vernon Broderick. The defendants' insurers would pay the US$79.5 million to Goldman, which would apply it towards compliance and governance measures, including giving more power to its chief compliance officer and creating an anonymous hotline for employee tips. US prosecutors have said Goldman helped 1MDB arrange US$6.5 billion of bond sales, but that US$4.5 billion was diverted via bribes and kickbacks to government officials, bankers and others. Shareholders led by the Atlanta-based Fulton County … [Read more...] about Goldman Sachs officials reach US$79.5m shareholder settlement over 1MDB scandal
Chinese stocks stand out as rare winners in global equity rout
- A + A (May 14): Chinese stocks saw a reversal of fortune this week versus global peers as investors tiptoed back into the market, betting an expected lift of Shanghai lockdowns would spur a rally. China’s benchmark CSI 300 Index rose 2% this week, standing out within a global sea of red. It’s also outperformed major peers for the month so far. Driving the turn in sentiment has been China’s stabilising Covid-19 outbreak, which helped soothe worries that movement restrictions may intensify. While the outlook remains highly uncertain, with China’s zero-Covid stance set to keep pressuring growth and the global economy looking fragile, stimulus promises from Beijing and cheap valuations are making more traders willing to take risks. “We don’t get so greedy as to try to time the market for the rock bottom,” said Yang Wei, a fund manager at Longwin Investment Management Co. “Valuations of some are now attractive enough to take the chance,” added Yang, who’s been … [Read more...] about Chinese stocks stand out as rare winners in global equity rout
US has the highest rate of gun-related deaths in more than 25 years, new CDC data shows
(CNN) Far too often, Dr. Debra Houry found herself covered in blood. As an emergency physician in the United States for about 20 years, Houry said, it was a "frequent occurrence" to treat young men in the emergency room for gunshot wounds. They often would "bleed out" on her as she was resuscitating them. Then she would search the hospital for a clean white coat to wear "so that I'd look respectable and presentable to talk to their families -- or to somebody that did survive but then was paralyzed or had traumatic stress as a result of it," Houry said. "That was heartbreaking." The rate of gun-related deaths in the US appears to be getting worse. Read More The US firearm homicide rate in 2020 was the highest recorded since 1994, according to data published Tuesday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where Houry serves as acting principal deputy director and head of the National Center for Injury Prevention. … [Read more...] about US has the highest rate of gun-related deaths in more than 25 years, new CDC data shows
