Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The company that operates Paris’ airports insists that plans are moving ahead to launch an air taxi service for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Solène Le Bris of Groupe ADP, which manages Charles De Gaulle and Orly airports, confirmed the timeline while speaking at an Amsterdam drone conference, according to The Guardian. “We are trying to launch the first e-VTOL [vertical takeoff and landing] pre-commercial service in the world: that’s our ambition,” she said. The Diminishing Returns Of Tighter Fine Particle Standards
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Justice Stephen Breyer warned in 1993 that “well-meaning, intelligent regulators, trying to carry out their regulatory tasks sensibly, can nonetheless bring about counterproductive results” by trying to exorcise the “last ten percent” of a pollutant, even as the costs of doing so soar. The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recent proposal setting National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for fine particles (PM 2.5 ) may be the poster child for that warning. It chases diminishing marginal returns while constraining investments in activities important for other goals, including modernizing infrastructure and combatting climate change. Section 109 of the 1970 Clean Air Act requires EPA to set primary NAAQS at a level that is ‘‘requisite to protect the public health” with “an adequate margin of safety.” The statutory language Congress penned more than 50 years ago is less than 700 words long, but it has spawned … [Read more...] about The Diminishing Returns Of Tighter Fine Particle Standards

Every U.S. Crypto Exchange (And Binance) Is Being Investigated By The SEC, Says Senator Lummis Staffer
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Widely circulated reports that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating $20 billion crypto exchange Coinbase are just the tip of the iceberg, according to a staffer from U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis’ (R-Wy) office. The staffer says every U.S. crypto exchange—and the largest crypto exchange in the world, Binance—are in various stages of being investigated. Lies, Cursed Lies, And Spreadsheets: A History Of Financial Calculations
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Bruce V. Roberts, CEO of Carofin , arranges direct private investments in growth companies by family offices and high net worth individuals. For over 100 years there has been debate among historians, and a few eccentric mathematicians, over the origin of the quote, “There are three types of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.” If you’re English, you could go with the 1st Earl of Balfour in 1892 or Benjamin Disraeli, a leading politician at that time. Spreadsheets, created on personal computers, now generate most of the financial reports and other more challenging computations used worldwide, including the statistics our forebears were so suspicious of. Complex analysis doesn’t necessarily lead to better conclusions. Monster spreadsheets, … [Read more...] about Lies, Cursed Lies, And Spreadsheets: A History Of Financial Calculations

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If you’re wondering about getting your child certified in scuba diving, you might consider doing it while on vacation. There are several reasons why. 1. Part of the certification process involves online coursework (aka homework), and it’s easier to get buy-in from a kid when the payoff is scuba diving in the Caribbean with a chance of seeing turtles, rays and a plethora of other fish. 2. The water is warmer in the Caribbean than other options in the U.S. (including the quarry in Pennsylvania, where many New Yorkers go for their open water dives). 3. Doing their open-water dives in a place brimming with marine life will get your child interested in making scuba diving a life-long activity. 4. It’s one-stop-shopping, which is easier for everyone. Once you decide that you’re going to get your child certified on vacation, the next question is where you should do it. While there are plenty of places in the … [Read more...] about Getting Your Child Certified In Scuba Diving While On Vacation
