India had one vote at the Golden Globe Awards this year, the country's first in the event's 80-year-long history. For Naatu Naatu , one proved to be a lucky number on the awards night. The studio is hoping Suicide Squad serves as the first course-correction for the DCU with regard to critical reception and audience expectations, after the negative reactions to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earlier this year (although some course-correcting already took place when the home entertainment release of that film's Ultimate Edition was met with reevaluations and more positive reviews). The domestic opening box office outlook for Suicide Squad saw a small dip last week, from an initial $125 million to $115 million, but this week those numbers are … [Read more...] about Review: ‘Suicide Squad’ Lets Bad Guys Shine For Wickedly Good Fun

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Russia and Iran are in talks over a plan to launch a new cryptocurrency backed by gold, which could be used in their bilateral trade deals. The news follows a scheme revealed in August last year for Iran to use crypto-currencies to settle cross-border trade deals, as a way of bypassing the international banking system and avoiding the use of U.S. dollars. While at least one trade deal was settled using a cryptocurrency, it is not clear if there has been any wider take-up of the mechanism. A report by Russian news agency Vedomosti on January 16 cited Anton Tkachev, a member of the Russian parliament’s Committee on Informational Policy, Information Technology and Communications, as saying negotiations on the issue were ongoing, although there were some regulatory hurdles still to clear – not least the need for Russia to legalise cryptocurrencies, which is expected to happen later this year. Imagine if the Michelin Guide were to declare that France’s best restaurant was a bistro in Grenoble that serves American hotdogs and pretzels. Yeah, that’s how I reacted to the James Beard Foundation’s announcement that Chai Pani, which serves Indian street food in Asheville, North Carolina, was America’s most outstanding restaurant. Once I had retrieved my jaw from the floor, pride replaced my surprise. As an Indian-American, I have been gratified to see my gastronomic heritage go from the margins to the mainstream in the US. At the James Beard award ceremony in Chicago where Chai Pani’s chef-owner Meherwan Irani collected his prize, another trailblazing Indian, Dhamaka’s Chintan Pandya, was named New York’s best chef. It is because of Dhamaka that, as I have argued, New York now has better Indian food than London. Chai Pani’s achievement reinforces my personal conviction that Indian cuisine, having long since colonized British palates, will one day top Chinese and … [Read more...] about An Indian restaurant’s rise mirrors Asheville’s
