Economic Survey takes a pragmatic line for climate change policies

January 31, 2023 by www.moneycontrol.com

Representative image Highlights Raw materials used in clean energy systems are concentrated in a select few countries outside India The availability of adequate and affordable finance remains a constraint Diversion of large scale funds to green energy can be a challenge for developing countries Despite the rapid scale-up of renewable energy capacities, India continues to depend on thermal power The FY23 economic survey took a balanced approach about climate change policies. It narrated the steps being taken by India to combat greenhouse gases and transition to cleaner sources of energy. But to achieve the stated goals, the survey emphasised the need for renewed support from developed countries, especially in the areas of finance, technology transfer and capacity-building. Importantly the survey rightly highlighted the limitations and economic costs of the climate change policies. Clean energy systems such as solar photovoltaic plants, wind farms, … [Read more...] about Economic Survey takes a pragmatic line for climate change policies

Climate untruth surges in denial, conspiracy comeback

February 1, 2023 by www.thejakartapost.com

Roland Lloyd Parry (Agence France-Presse) (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Paris   ● Wed, February 1 2023 False information about climate change flourished online over the past year, researchers say, with denialist social media posts and conspiracy theories surging after the United States’ environmental reforms and Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover. “What really surprised us this year was to see a resurgence in language that is reminiscent of the 1980s, phrases like ‘climate hoax’ and ‘climate scam’ that deny the phenomenon of climate change,” said Jennie King, head of civic action at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a London-based digital research group. Popular topics included the false claims that CO2 did not cause climate change or that global warming was not caused by human activity, Climate Action Against Disinformation (CAAD), a coalition of campaigners, said in a report. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited … [Read more...] about Climate untruth surges in denial, conspiracy comeback

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Stephan Schambach is the Founder and CEO of NewStore , a turnkey omnichannel store solution. The events of the past few years disrupted everything brands thought they knew about retail. Backlogged supply chains led to widespread product shortages, while the pandemic accelerated a shift to e-commerce that had been gaining steam for years. Few retailers could have predicted the macroeconomic trends that would upend their plans in 2020. But unpredictability may be the only thing retailers can depend on moving forward. I’ve built three commerce companies on the simple premise that change is the only constant in retail. Over the next decade, I think preparing for persistent market fluctuations will be more than a competitive advantage—it will be a necessity. Three Titans Of Change Ultimately, I believe several global forces will reshape consumer behavior, transform the shopping experience and challenge industry … [Read more...] about Embracing Change: Readying Retail For The Next 30 Years

Agents of Change: Three startups that are helping build a sustainable future

February 26, 2021 by www.moneycontrol.com

Amid last year's unexpected challenge that fractured global economies, the World Economic Forum released its Global Risk Report, which informs the WEF’s multi-stakeholder initiatives throughout the year. For the first time in the survey’s history, the top five global risks were linked to environmental challenges: extreme weather, climate action failure, natural disasters, bio-diversity loss, and human-made environmental disasters. As environmental and economic risks are inextricably linked, companies are beginning to re-evaluate their business priorities and find ways to mitigate environmental challenges in addition to overall risk management and building business resilience. In the past few years, emerging technologies have been a harbinger of change, facilitating sustainable development and accelerating economic progress. They have not only helped address business challenges across the value chain, but also revealed new insights and offered new solutions. Technologies such as … [Read more...] about Agents of Change: Three startups that are helping build a sustainable future

Planting More Trees In Cities Could Slash Summer Heat Deaths, Study Finds

January 31, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Planting more trees in cities could cut the number of people dying from high temperatures in summer, according to a study published in the Lancet medical journal on Tuesday, a strategy that could help mitigate the effects of climate change as it continues to drive temperatures upwards. Key Facts Cities experience much warmer temperatures than the rural areas surrounding them—a phenomenon known as the urban heat island effect—a result of vegetation and green spaces being replaced with structures like roads and buildings that absorb heat. The effect is particularly problematic in summer, when temperatures can soar to dangerous levels and more people die of heat-related causes, but can be tackled by planting more trees, researchers suggest. An analysis of mortality data from some 57 million people living in 93 European cities in the summer of 2015—the most recent year for which data is … [Read more...] about Planting More Trees In Cities Could Slash Summer Heat Deaths, Study Finds

How Classic Car Owners Can Carbon Offset Their Vintage Rides To Soften Their Environmental Effect

January 31, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Whether one is a vintage car aficionado or is just holding tenaciously onto a well-worn, high mileage model for economic or sentimental reasons, an older vehicle that gets fewer mpg and is old enough to lack anti-pollution hardware will surely emit more harmful tailpipe emissions than would a newer model. Congress passed the Clean Air Act back in 1970 that gave the Environmental Protection Agency the power to regulate pollution from cars and other forms of transportation. More than half a century later the EPA says that today’s passenger vehicles emit 98-99% fewer pollutants than they did prior to regulation. This creates something of a conundrum among environmentally conscious classic car enthusiasts who own and drive own one or more memorable models that tend to spew spewing higher levels of greenhouses gases into the atmosphere that current standards allow. Fortunately, there is a way to help those owning older … [Read more...] about How Classic Car Owners Can Carbon Offset Their Vintage Rides To Soften Their Environmental Effect

Some of the extremists who prevented McCarthy's smooth election and embarrassed the GOP have now arrived at the House’s Energy and Commerce Committee and its subcommittees, and everyone should be worried. The World Economic Forum Warns Of Polycrises

January 31, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There are a handful of insightful reports I look forward to every year. The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report is one of them. This year’s report is based on interviews with over 1,200 experts across academia, business, government, the international community and civil society. “’Global risk’” is defined as the possibility of the occurrence of an event or condition which, if it occurs, would negatively impact a significant proportion of global GDP, population or natural resources. The report lists the leading risks that are currently manifesting themselves. But it also looks at what the most important risks are likely to be in the short term - a horizon of two years, and the long term, over the next ten years. Current Global Risks Regular readers of the news should not be surprised to see the energy supply crisis, the cost-of-living crisis; and rising inflation as the top three risks. Interestingly, the … [Read more...] about The World Economic Forum Warns Of Polycrises

Elon Musk wasn’t invited to World Economic Forum meeting at Davos, say organisers

January 18, 2023 by www.moneycontrol.com

The World Economic Forum says billionaire Elon Musk wasn't on the guest list for the annual meeting of business executives, global leaders and cultural trend-setters in Davos, Switzerland despite what the Twitter owner claims. Notables from European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen to actor Idris Elba are gathering in the ritzy Alpine town this week to talk about global issues ranging from war to climate change and technology's effects on security. Elon Musk wasn't there, though he says he was invited. Forum spokesman Yann Zopf knocked that down Tuesday, saying the last time the Tesla CEO got an invitation was “not this year and not recently - last time in 2015.” Musk said in a tweet Dec. 22: “My reason for declining the Davos invitation was not because I thought they were engaged in diabolical scheming, but because it sounded boring af lol.” He didn’t specify when he got the invitation, but the tweet's timing suggested it was for this year. Musk did not immediately … [Read more...] about Elon Musk wasn’t invited to World Economic Forum meeting at Davos, say organisers
