Liberty Global’s €18.4 billion (£16.2 billion) German sale to Vodafone could open the door for the company to swoop on ITV, a City analyst said on Wednesday. The US media giant, which also owns Virgin Media, stands to bank €10.8 billion in cash after selling operations to Vodafone in Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania. Liberum’s Ian Whittaker said the windfall will “fuel speculation that Liberty, which has a circa 10% stake in ITV, could bid for the rest of ITV, especially given Liberty’s stated intention to focus on its UK cable operations”. Liberty, owned by billionaire investor John Malone, has long been touted as a potential suitor for the British broadcaster after taking a stake in 2014. Piers Morgan, Jonathan Ross and other top TV stars are coming to White City after ITV announced it is moving its daytime production business. Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women will be produced from Television Centre studios, as will Strictly Come Dancing’s spin off show, It Takes Two, and The Jonathan Ross Show. Some 350 staff will also move to White City while redevelopment work is carried out at its South Bank studios, growing the area’s reputation as a hub for the creative industries in west London. ITV Studios will occupy 27,000 sq ft of modern office space with some 350 staff moving in 2018 into The WestWorks building, part of Stanhope and Mitsui Fudosan’s White City Place business district comprising one million sq ft of office space. The former EasyJet chief executive blamed tough advertising market conditions for a £5million fall in revenue, the biggest drop since 2009. But she said the rapid growth of internet video services and Comcast’s £22billion swoop on Sky showed how valuable businesses that produced their own content were. Announcing a ‘refresh’ of ITV’s strategy, McCall said original programming was one of its greatest strengths and could be sold to newer players such as Netflix and Amazon, which are spending billions of pounds on shows.
