Hsiao Chin: Bridging The Gap Between Italy And China
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin With the onset of Art Basel Hong Kong and opening of borders, travellers and art lovers have flocked to the city (with a vengeance) to experience again what the most important art week of Asia was like pre-covid. But this time, it’s different. Amidst the noise, it’s even more important to filter out what’s good and what’s not. Missing from the fair but important nonetheless is Hsiao Chin , the first and only post-war Chinese artist to convey Eastern philosophical ideas and the concepts of mindfulness and self-contemplation in the Western pictorial language of abstraction. He contributed immensely to the development of avant-garde art and established himself prominently in the modern abstract movement in Asia. Like his senior masters Lin Fengmian and Zao Wou-ki, who travelled to France, Hsiao was greatly motivated by Western art during his stay in Spain , and subsequently moved to Italy, where he co-founded the Punto … [Read more...] about Hsiao Chin: Bridging The Gap Between Italy And China
Italy Proposes A Ban On Lab-Grown Meats To Protect Its Food Heritage
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Italian government has given its support to a bill that would prohibit the sale of lab-grown meat and other synthetic foods, highlighting Italian food heritage as a leading cause. If the bill passes, anyone who violates the ban could face fines of up to €60,000 ($65,017). Calling for protection of "natural food vs synthetic food," lobbyists have collected half a million signatures in recent months, including that of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Her government has also recently decreed a ban on the use of insect-derived flour in pizza and pasta. At a “flash mob” outside her office in Rome, Meloni said, “we could only celebrate with our farmers a measure that puts our farmers in the vanguard, not just on the issue of defending excellence... but also in defending consumers." The “mob” was organized by Coldiretti (the main Italian/European association of farmers). The farming lobby welcomed the move, but … [Read more...] about Italy Proposes A Ban On Lab-Grown Meats To Protect Its Food Heritage
Italy To Charge Entry Fee To One Of Its Most Popular Attractions
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Visitors to Rome’s Pantheon will soon have to pay an entry fee, Italy’s culture ministry has confirmed. The ancient building is one of Italy’s most popular tourist attractions. Dating from the first century BC, it draws millions of visitors each year. The visitor fee was announced after the Italian culture ministry and church officials signed an agreement on Thursday. The proceeds from the tickets will be divided between the culture ministry, which will receive 70 percent to fund maintenance and cleaning costs, and the Rome diocese. How much will it cost to visit the Pantheon? Tourists in Rome will be charged a €5 ($5.40) entry fee to visit the Pantheon, a Roman temple that was transformed into a Catholic church in 609 AD. Culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano said the decision was a case of "good sense." The idea of an entry fee had been mooted several years ago, but was shelved by a previous government in … [Read more...] about Italy To Charge Entry Fee To One Of Its Most Popular Attractions

The Charms Of Verdicchio – One Of Italy’s Greatest White Wines
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Verdicchio is arguably the greatest white varietal in Italy; some will point to Greco or Fiano from Campania, while others may argue for Vermentino from Tuscany and Liguria. But there is no dispute that wines made from Verdicchio are among the most delicious, most complex and longest lived in the country. There are two principal Verdicchio wines; Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica. The former is named for the castles of Jesi, a town in eastern Marche, not far from the Adriatic Sea, while the latter is produced in an inland zone farther west and south of Jesi. While both wines display lovely aromas of melon, pear, citrus and white flowers, and have very good, sometimes lively acidity, there are differences between these two wine types. Gianluca Garofoli , at his family estate in the Jesi zone, comments on these various styles. “The main differences are the soil, the microclimates, and the … [Read more...] about The Charms Of Verdicchio – One Of Italy’s Greatest White Wines
