Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Last Thursday on roads north of Malibu, I had 90 minutes behind the wheel of the first production Pininfarina Battista, with chief engineer Paolo Dellacha riding shotgun. With 1726 lb. ft. of instant torque generated by four inboard-mounted electric motors, a “super-brain” carefully metering and adjusting power sent to each individual wheel at any given moment to maximize speed and agility, Battista proves beyond doubt that in its post-Ferrari era, Pininfarina has its mojo back. With the launch of Battista, Pininfarina fulfills the family’s nearly century-old dream of not just being carrozzeria for other carmakers, but of manufacturing their own brand of automobiles. At the close of my drive, I executed two acceleration runs in the most aggressive calibration, “Furioso,” in which Battista can hit 60 mph in under 2 seconds, shaving a half-second off the sprint time of Bugatti Chiron, the quickest internal … [Read more...] about Pininfarina Got Its Mojo Back: First Drive Of Italy’s Most Extraordinary Hypercar, The Electric Battista

Shanghai to reopen all schools Sept 1 as lockdown fears persist
- A + A SHANGHAI (Aug 14): China's financial hub Shanghai said on Sunday that it would reopen all schools including kindergartens, primary and middle schools on Sept 1, after months of Covid-19 closures. The city will require all teachers and students to take nucleic acid tests for the coronavirus every day before leaving campus, the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission said. It also called for teachers and students to carry out a 14-day "self health management" within the city ahead of the school reopening, the commission said in a statement. Shanghai shut all schools in mid-March before the city's two-month lockdown to combat its worst Covid outbreak in April and May. It allowed some students of high school and middle school to return to classrooms in June, while most of the rest continued home study for the remainder of the semester. The announcement on schools reopening brings great relief to many residents but fears about Covid lockdowns continue to … [Read more...] about Shanghai to reopen all schools Sept 1 as lockdown fears persist
Russian tourists to Finland greeted with Ukrainian anthem
Tourists gather on the bridge over the Vuoksi river near The Imatra Rapids in Imatra, Finland, on August 12, 2022. AFP LAPPEENRANTA, Finland — A crowd of people gathers in the Eastern Finnish city of Imatra on a bridge overlooking Imatrankoski rapids, one of the Nordic country’s most well-known natural attractions. At the same time every day, the river’s almost century-old dam is opened and water rushes under the bridge, to the sound of music by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. It is a popular attraction especially for Russian tourists. Even Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, visited Imatrankoski in 1772. But since the end of July, the city of Imatra has started the show by playing the Ukrainian national anthem, to protest the Russian invasion. Finland, which shares 1,300-kilometer (800-mile) eastern border with Russia, is also preparing to limit tourist visas issued for Russians. “This is bad for the Russians who love Finland,” says Mark Kosykh, a 44-year-old Russian … [Read more...] about Russian tourists to Finland greeted with Ukrainian anthem

Big cats in urban jungle: From mountain lions in Los Angeles to leopards in Mumbai
A leopard is seen walking across a ridge in Aarey colony near Sanjay Gandhi National Park overlooking Mumbai. Los Angeles and Mumbai share many superlatives as pinnacles of cinema, fashion, and traffic congestion. But another similarity lurks in the shadows, most often seen at night walking silently on four paws. These metropolises are the worlds only megacities of 10 million-plus where large felines mountain lions in one, leopards in the other thrive by breeding, hunting and maintaining territory within urban boundaries. Long-term studies in both cities have examined how the big cats prowl through their urban jungles, and how people can best live alongside them lessons that may be applicable to more places in coming decades. In the future, there's going to be more cities like this, as urban areas further encroach on natural habitats, said biologist Audra Huffmeyer, who studies mountain lions at the University of California, Los Angeles. If we want to keep these large … [Read more...] about Big cats in urban jungle: From mountain lions in Los Angeles to leopards in Mumbai
