Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At the turn of the century, New York served as the epicenter of America’s Gilded Age. Those who have seen the period drama know that city socialite Caroline Astor hosted lavish parties at her Fifth Avenue mansion. One of her five children, Colonel John Jacob “Jack” Astor IV, went on to become one of the wealthiest men in America. He pursued the family business, including the development of grand hotels, and in so doing, left travelers 118 years later with a glimpse of a bygone era at The St. Regis New York . The French Beaux-Arts style hotel debuted on September 4th, 1904. Some historians consider the inn for the upper crust the apogee of Astor’s career. Unfortunately, his life was cut short at 47. He died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912, though not before helping his young, pregnant wife escape on a lifeboat. Writers often recount this story in profiles of the hotel, though I choose to mention it not … [Read more...] about The Gilded Age For Modern Travelers: What It’s Like To Stay At The St. Regis New York

A New Year and a New Leader, but Germany’s Focus Remains on COVID
Germany Chancellor Olaf Scholz There was a new face delivering the chancellor’s New Year’s Eve address, but for COVID-19-weary Germans, the focus was all too familiar. Under normal circumstances, Chancellor Olaf Scholz — the first person in nearly two decades other than Angela Merkel to deliver the address — would have used the occasion Friday to lay out his vision and wish people a happy new year. But these are not normal circumstances, so while he was able to touch on a variety of issues like climate change, the economy and European security, the spotlight was on the coronavirus and the country’s response to it. In writing the speech, Scholz and his staff appeared keenly aware that their best hope of pushing through their agenda was to inspire a sense of national cohesion in a country where the differences have often been on vivid display. “What I perceive everywhere is a huge solidarity, an overwhelming willingness to help and a new sense of pulling together and … [Read more...] about A New Year and a New Leader, but Germany’s Focus Remains on COVID
Trouble in paradise: ‘House of the Dragon’ showrunners on the Targaryens’ generational war
Milly Alcock in “House of the Dragon” As they say, the past is never where you think you left it. But that’s exactly where the creators of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” (HOTD), the eagerly anticipated prequel of “Game of Thrones” (GoT), wish to take its viewers—a monumental task that is as exciting as it is ambitious. Long before the Starks and the Lannisters found themselves fighting tooth and nail over power, birth right and survival, it was the House Targaryen that once ruled all Seven Kingdoms on the continent of Westeros. And why not? The Targaryens are mystical people with magic in their blood, so why shouldn’t anybody with the ability to control dragons be allowed to sit on the Iron Throne at King’s Landing? Last week, we spoke to HOTD’s showrunners, writer-cocreator Ryan Condal and director Miguel Sapochnik, in a roundtable interview to discuss the 10-episode series. “House of the Dragon”, which launches on HBO Go on Aug. 22, is based on author George RR Martin’s “Fire … [Read more...] about Trouble in paradise: ‘House of the Dragon’ showrunners on the Targaryens’ generational war
Need a new AC? This smart air conditioner is powerful and efficient
Windmill wants to solve one of summer’s most intractable problems: the blight of ugly air conditioners. The New York-based startup launched in 2020 with a 10,000-person waitlist for its $415 smart AC, a sleek window unit that has more in common, design-wise, with Apple’s HomePods than the hulking air conditioners of yore. The first run of units sold out within 48 hours. advertisement advertisement This April, Windmill’s wifi-enabled air conditioners got a mini makeover with the reveal of a smaller $365 unit —a 6,000-BTU AC that cools up to 250-sq ft., which makes it ideal for a city apartment or office space. (Compared to the original 8.3k BTU $415 unit that we reviewed last year.) The line expansion arrives alongside the announcement of a $10 million fundraising round and the addition of Walmart to the direct-to-consumer brand’s list of big-box retailers, which already includes Home Depot and P.C. Richard & Son . Founded by Ryan … [Read more...] about Need a new AC? This smart air conditioner is powerful and efficient
Harry’s Table By Cipriani Makes Market Shopping Chic On New York’s Upper West Side
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin New Yorkers have never wanted for Italian specialties shops, but New Yorkers have never seen anything quite like the new Harry’s Table by Cipriani (hereafter HTC), outside of the stunning, long-lived PECK in Milan, and far more appealing than the touristy New York EATALY stores. In its breadth of space alone—28,000 square feet—HTC sets an unhurried pace, and, while sometime in the future it may be jammed, for the moment the eight-week-old market is a civilized pleasure to visit, shop in and eat at. HTC is located at ground level in the dwarfing, monolithic Two Waterline Square, near Lincoln Center, from which it currently draws most of its clientele. Since parking (outside of an expensive lot) is almost impossible, dropping by for those who do not live in the area will require you take a taxi or car service. The sprawling food market is the first by the Cipriani family, whose legendary history dates back to 1931, … [Read more...] about Harry’s Table By Cipriani Makes Market Shopping Chic On New York’s Upper West Side
These Cars And SUVs Will Be Discontinued For 2023
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If there are two words that can attract the attention of avid shoppers, it’s “clearance sale.” The auto industry traditionally celebrates each new model year in early fall, as shipments of shiny new models begin to reach dealerships. Though the industry’s ongoing supply and demand issues may limit a given dealer’s leftover stock as the 2022 model year comes to an end, crafty consumers should still be able to garner some great deals on vehicles that are being discontinued. Usually, models wind up on the corporate chopping block because of sharply declining sales, but some otherwise worthy rides wind up simply being victims of shifting consumer preferences. This year’s fleet of discontinued cars and SUVs ranges from the mild (the 98 horsepower Chevrolet Spark) to the wild (Acura’s NSX with 600 horses), but you’ll have to act fast if you want to drive one of these last-chance rides home before they’re all gone: Acura … [Read more...] about These Cars And SUVs Will Be Discontinued For 2023
