Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Kevin Davey isn’t shy about calling himself the father of the cold IPA. “I did coin the term, envisioned the style, brewed the first one and put it on a label,” says Davey, the brewmaster of lager-centric Wayfinder Beer in Portland, Oregon. “Sure, I'll take the title.” Davey’s first cold IPA, Relapse, was brewed in 2018 and has been renamed Original Cold IPA. It differs from a hazy New England IPA and a more traditional West Coast IPA. “Cold IPA mainly differs from New England IPA, because it employs a very high amount of fermentable adjuncts — such as corn or rice, which lighten the body — as opposed to unfermentable adjuncts, such as flaked wheat, oats or maltodextrin, which increase the body,” he says. “Like West Coast IPA, it is aggressively bitter and strong in alcohol —above 7%. But, unlike West Coast IPA, it uses no caramel malts and a cleaner yeast profile.” The taste of a cold IPA is cleaner and … [Read more...] about Portland Brewer Invents New Style Of Craft Beer

An ICC Working Group Might Be Formed As Cricket Grapples With Explosion Of Cashed-Up T20 Leagues
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin An International Cricket Council (ICC) working group might be formed as power brokers grapple with the mushrooming of T20 franchise leagues into the international calendar amid a potentially seismic shift for cricket. The increasingly thorny issue was a major part of discussions at the ICC’s annual conference in Birmingham last week in the aftermath of new cash-rich T20 leagues announced in South Africa and the UAE UAE . Those much anticipated leagues, launching in January concurrently with Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) undergoing revitalisation , are set to offer huge pay packets due largely to the Indian Premier League’s expanded footprint stoking fears its well-heeled private enterprises will cannibalise T20 franchise cricket. The UAE league, dubbed the International League T20, was initially set to offer marquee players $300,000, as I reported in May, but with wealthy IPL owners on board, stars could … [Read more...] about An ICC Working Group Might Be Formed As Cricket Grapples With Explosion Of Cashed-Up T20 Leagues
A change in attitude and approach was required after last year’s T20 World Cup: Rohit Sharma
(Image credit: @mufaddal_vohra/Twitter) A disastrous campaign in the last T20 World Cup has forced the Indian team to bring about a radical change in its attitude and approach, skipper Rohit Sharma has said. Rohit is now gearing up to lead the Indian side in the upcoming edition of the T20 showpiece in Australia, but before that, they have the Asia Cup to deal with. Speaking on Star Sports show ’Follow the Blues’, Rohit said, ”We’ve made it very clear after the T20 World Cup in Dubai, where we didn’t qualify for the finals, that we felt there needed to be a change in our attitude and approach in how we play our game.” India will enter the Asia Cup as defending champions. Why we’ll remember Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma’s dream partnership at Birmingham for a long time
Smriti Mandhana being left-handed, every shot she played dripped with grace, including the massive slog over the bowler for six that landed well into the stands. (Image source: Twitter/BCCIWomen) Watching Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma in action against Pakistan at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham had a curious effect—without consciously thinking about it, the first thing it evoked was a memory: of watching Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag opening for India. Here was a compact left-handed batter at the height of her powers, totally bossing the opposition, relying on her wonderfully honed timing, announcing her intentions with a magnificent lifted drive over extra cover, as smooth and effortless a shot as you’ll ever see on a cricket field. Her muscular, powerful opening partner then waded into the thick of things with a hoick over the bowler’s head that was a marvel of hand-eye coordination and brute force, sending the ball soaring over the boundary, … [Read more...] about Why we’ll remember Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma’s dream partnership at Birmingham for a long time
Subscription-based OTT aha takes advertising route to drive revenue
Representative image. At a time when US streaming giant Netflix is experimenting with advertisements on its platform, an Indian player, aha, has already taken the hybrid approach. Last financial year, the company started offering brand solutions through which it earned $2 million in revenue. The company says it has doubled that in the first four-five months of FY23. Following brand solutions, aha is now launching advertising on the platform that will let them run ads while they stream content. For running ads on the platform, they have partnered with Google. With this, aha expects ad revenue to increase 5x in FY23 versus last year. “We have on-boarded 50 advertisers so far. We expect revenue from ad inventory to contribute 25-30 percent to the overall business. We also want to do on-ground events and take those on the platform and from this segment. We are looking at 15-20 percent (ad revenue) contribution," Nitin Burman, Vice-President, Head, Non-subscription Revenue, … [Read more...] about Subscription-based OTT aha takes advertising route to drive revenue
When local is universal: SonyLIV to launch Tamil Originals this month
SonyLIV's growth trajectory suggests that the formula that works in India is provincialism and Indianness without the crutches of imitating or replicating templates that have worked in other markets. (Image: Screen grab from 'Meme Boys' trailer/sonyLIV) October 2020 was a milestone for India’s homegrown OTT SonyLIV, the digital streaming platform of Sony Entertainment Network—till then, a lumbering interface with just murmurs of appreciation for a few shows like Your Honour and Undekhi . Its association with Applause Entertainment, newly headed by one of India’s most successful television heads Sameer Nair, with the Hansal Mehta-led series Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story gave SonyLIV enough teeth to compete with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Scam 1992 was SonyLIV’s propeller shaft. The series, based on the book The Scam: Who Won, Who Lost, Who Got Away by Sucheta Dalal and Debashish Basu, was a roaring success. Critics loved it. So did audiences. The Harshad Mehta … [Read more...] about When local is universal: SonyLIV to launch Tamil Originals this month
