Gross fixed capital formation was supposed to have grown 4.5 percent in the first advance estimates — it’s now estimated to have grown by 7.6 percent. Exports of goods and services were estimated to have grown 4.5 percent initially -- they’re now estimated to have grown 5.6 percent. The estimate of growth in government fixed capital expenditure rose to 10.9 percent from 8.5 percent. The full effect of the trade wars is now being seen in China’s economic data. Its exports for December 2018 fell by 4.4 percent from a year ago. Exporters had resorted to speeding up exports in the pipeline in order to beat Trump’s proposed tariffs. The Bank of America-Merrill Lynch survey of global fund managers finds a return of risk appetite for emerging market equities in January. Fund managers were a net 29 percent overweight emerging markets, a swift turnaround from the net 10 percent underweight seen last September.
