How Fintech Platform CNote Gives Socially Conscious Investors New Ways To Battle Inequality: An Interview With Catherine Berman
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Catherine Berman is CEO and cofounder of CNote , an innovative fintech platform that unlocks new investment opportunities for retail and institutional investors. Working with mission-aligned community lenders, CNote aims to close the wealth gap by allowing anyone to invest in small businesses, affordable housing and economic development in financially underserved communities, with a focus on lending to women and minorities. Berman, a three-time entrepreneur who has built and scaled multimillion-dollar businesses, left traditional financial services on a mission to build a more inclusive economy. She realized that federally certified Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) were already providing accessible loans to small businesses—but investing in them was too complex for the vast majority of investors. She co-founded CNote with Yuliya Tarasava, (COO) in 2016 to solve that problem. The two women—who have … [Read more...] about How Fintech Platform CNote Gives Socially Conscious Investors New Ways To Battle Inequality: An Interview With Catherine Berman
COVID showed us how to create work that finally includes people with disabilities
Weeks after many large U.S. employers and their workers began a new hybrid work model, the results so far are messy. Executives who said they’re excited to join their colleagues again in person aren’t showing up. And some employees say they’d rather quit than work in the office. advertisement advertisement It turns out the flexibility the pandemic forced employers to give workers—like the freedom to work from home and more control over their schedules—may be just what employees needed to be more productive and create a better, healthier life. While this flexible, more person-centered approach is new for many, it’s exactly what people with disabilities have been fighting for long before we first heard of COVID-19. Right now, a lot of people may be rethinking and reshaping work life to include an office setting that doesn’t feel right anymore. That experience is something very familiar to millions of people with disabilities. Before the … [Read more...] about COVID showed us how to create work that finally includes people with disabilities
Why celebrated designer Bruce Mau is betting on a new kind of Renaissance
In 1418, the city of Florence held a competition to build a dome over its cathedral. Filippo Brunelleschi’s octagonal dome made history as the first to be built without a temporary supporting frame. It remains the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dome today. advertisement advertisement Brunelleschi, however, wasn’t trained as an architect or a builder but as a goldsmith. He also wrote poetry, designed settings for theatrical performances, and led groundbreaking optical and geometrical experiments that led to the development of linear perspective. At 39, he even opened his own school where he taught mathematics, geometry, and art. Now a new book argues a similar mentality can be fostered today, except it’s not about a Renaissance man but a “Renaissance team.” The Nexus argues that the complex problems of our generation can be solved only if art, technology, and science converge like they did during the Renaissance. advertisement … [Read more...] about Why celebrated designer Bruce Mau is betting on a new kind of Renaissance
The man who helped create Singapore’s housing boom is getting worried
- A + A (June 23): Glossy, cosmopolitan Singapore is playing host to a very unusual balancing act. The city is one of Asia’s most expensive property markets — and at the same time, boasts one of the highest home ownership rates in the world. Liu Thai Ker, “the architect of modern Singapore,” is a big part of the reason why. As the chief architect of Singapore’s Housing Development Board, Liu was instrumental in establishing a housing model that has underpinned decades of astonishing economic growth. The 84-year-old Yale graduate personally oversaw the development of more than half a million public housing units. Now, almost 90% of the city’s residents own the well-designed, government-built apartments they live in. Since its independence in 1965, citizens have been able to buy these units at a steep discount, turning homeownership into a key way for Singaporeans to grow their wealth. But in the past few years — and especially since the pandemic, which plunged the … [Read more...] about The man who helped create Singapore’s housing boom is getting worried
Poaching and coaching in Kota: Race for $500 million education hub heats up
Hemant Kumar Bhadoriya (name changed) was travelling in a chauffeur-driven sports utility vehicle on a Saturday afternoon in Kota, seemingly headed to Jaipur, where people typically go on weekend getaways. Unlike the others, though, Bhadoriya was not out on a leisure drive. Neither was he actually going to Jaipur. He was, in fact, just sitting in the car and talking about money. Crores of rupees. Bhadoriya is not a lawyer or an investment banker. Neither does he deal in illegal activities. He is a maths teacher at Kota’s top coaching centre and was negotiating with a potential employer, one of the country’s biggest edtech companies. The edtech startup had offered him a 40 percent hike on his existing salary of Rs 1.65 crore. “At first, I was shocked and a bit sceptical when I heard about the offer as every day we have been reading about how hundreds of employees were getting laid off by startups,” said Bhadoriya, 46. “But then it was for their offline classes and I have been … [Read more...] about Poaching and coaching in Kota: Race for $500 million education hub heats up
Beyond Pride: LGBTQ+ Communities Still Need Stronger Support Networks, Research Reveals
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Though LGBTQ+ rights have advanced significantly since the Stonewall riots of June 1969 that are commemorated as part of Pride Month, the community still faces marginalization and repression – even in the most liberal of societies. Approximately two-thirds of self-identified LGBTQ+ Americans say they have experienced discrimination in their personal lives, and roughly half report being closeted at work. Research by the University of Cologne also found that LGBTQ+ people are almost three times more likely to suffer depression and burnout as a result of chronic stress and homophobia and the researcher, Dr. Mirjam Fischer , has said that health services must address this. “In our societies, many LGBTQ+ people experience chronic stress due to homophobia and heterosexism, which can result in health problems. Even the anticipation of discrimination, independent of experiences of discrimination, can create and exacerbate … [Read more...] about Beyond Pride: LGBTQ+ Communities Still Need Stronger Support Networks, Research Reveals
How Justin Marks And Trackhouse Racing Are Becoming Nascar’s Biggest Disruptor
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Trackhouse Racing has been the surprise team of the 2022 Nascar season. The Next Gen (Gen7) car and the fresh approach from co-owner Justin Marks are leading the way. Spend enough time in the paddock of auto racing, and you’ll find that the unofficial uniform color is black. Black golf shirts. Black khakis. It’s not every team or race official, but it’s something not hard to miss. Coincidence, subconscious or not, Justin Marks is wearing all white as I approach him in the paddock ahead of the Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. Marks and Trackhouse Racing may not be going entirely in the opposite direction of every other Cup series team, but they certainly are the biggest disruptor thus far in 2022. In 16 races, Trackhouse has pulled off three wins; an incredible feat for a team founded in 2020. Yes, Marks and co-owner Pitbull made an offer Chip Ganassi couldn’t refuse to purchase his Nascar team assets in June of 2021 … [Read more...] about How Justin Marks And Trackhouse Racing Are Becoming Nascar’s Biggest Disruptor
How Crystal Cruises Pulled Off Its Massive Expansion
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This week’s jaw dropping announcement by Crystal Cruises that in one fell swoop it is expanding into river cruising, offering a yacht product, operating its own private jet tours and selling 144 multi-million dollar residences aboard three new build cruise ships was part of a vision President and CEO Edie Rodriguez had in mind when she joined the line in October 2013. However, it wasn’t until this May, when the company was acquired by Genting Hong Kong , the dream began to take hold. She tells Forbes.com, more significant initiatives will be unveiled in the next six months. For industry observers, joining Crystal may have seemed a surprising move for Rodriguez, even if it was for the top job. A 34-year industry veteran, who started as a travel agent, she served in senior leadership positions at Carnival Corporation’s Carnival Cruise Lines, Cunard and Seabourn, as well as most recently senior vice president of sales and … [Read more...] about How Crystal Cruises Pulled Off Its Massive Expansion
The CEO Rebooting AI
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Few people can claim the moniker of “pioneer” in building the internet as we know it. Rami Rahim , CEO of Juniper Networks , is one of them who had a front-row seat in the late 90s to the infant days of building the internet. At the time, I along with other Silicon Valley CEOs, was frantically building out web 1.0 companies, which required a grueling DIY business creation approach. Back then, we all had to build everything ourselves, like hardware, software, data centers and even dial-up access networks—without convenient, low-cost broadband and AWS services that allow us to quickly launch services, apps and sites now. The predominant problem pioneers like Rahim were trying to solve for us centered on creating massive networking hardware capable of keeping up with a world teeming with people interested in logging onto the world wide web—especially bandwidth thirsty online games companies like mine at the time. He … [Read more...] about The CEO Rebooting AI
