How Net Zero Became Our Global Climate Goal And Why We Need It

April 18, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin 2021 was the year net-zero commitments went mainstream. Following the COP 26 climate conference in Glasgow, well over 100 governments have set a net-zero decarbonization target. These commitments cover 88% of global emissions, 90% of global GDP, and 85% of global population . Nearly one-thousand municipalities and over three thousand private businesses have also made net-zero commitments as part of the UN’s Race to Zero decarbonization initiative. While these commitments are a positive first step, they must now be backed by concerted action. The stakes are higher than ever as climate change continues to intensify. Net zero by 2050 is a science-based goal that aims to limit the worst effects of global warming. Policymakers, business leaders, and the public should understand both the origins and urgency around this crucial climate goal. A manmade crisis Human activities produce around 35 billion tons of carbon … [Read more...] about How Net Zero Became Our Global Climate Goal And Why We Need It

Swiss Tech Firm Bcomp’s Natural Flax Fiber Forms A Modern Rei Icon

August 9, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Rei was an inspiring project and a touch ahead of its time. In 2009, Japanese material firm Tras engaged the renowned product designer Keita Shimizu to create a chair that uniquely showcased its advanced carbon composite craftsmanship. The duo drew inspiration from Japan’s long history of composite work and lacquering, while the chair’s execution paid homage to the 1,300-year-old Ashura statue — a national treasure made entirely from composites. Tras has now engaged the Swiss tech materials innovator Bcomp to do something similar using its award-winning ampliTex natural fibers for a Rei chair with sustainability credentials. Bcomp’s fiber composite solution is derived from nature but rivals artificial carbon fiber in agility and toughness. Plus, it adds a novel technical aesthetic to the chair. As one of the country’s leading composite specialists, Tras works primarily on race cars and motorcycles. Live from InvestFest with Downtown Josh Brown, BitBoy Crypto, and Lamar Wilson

August 8, 2022 by www.investopedia.com

U.S. stocks continued to claw their way back last week, especially growth stocks . For the week, the Nasdaq posted a gain of 2.2% and the S&P 500 rose 0.4%. The Dow? Not so much, sliding just 0.1%. A blowout jobs report for July offered up another dose of good news for the economy and not-so-good news for the stock market, but equity investors hung in there. U.S. employers added 528,000 jobs to their payrolls last month , which was more than twice what was expected, and that added credence to the Federal Reserve 's stance that the U.S. economy is not in a recession given the continued strength of the labor market. So, the thinking goes, the Fed will continue to be aggressive in raising interest rates to cool down inflation, because it's not impacting companies' willingness to hire. That led to a steep selloff in U.S. Treasurys, with the yield on the 10-year Treasury note ending the week at 2.83%. Oil prices continue to tumble, hitting their lowest level since early … [Read more...] about Live from InvestFest with Downtown Josh Brown, BitBoy Crypto, and Lamar Wilson

National interest as driver of foreign policy

August 10, 2022 by opinion.inquirer.net

A true independent Philippine foreign policy is in the making. At least, it appears that way. President Marcos Jr. pledged to maintain good relations with the rest of the world and vowed to stand firm in the country’s independent foreign policy. He said the national interest would be his primordial guide. With the current global political economy and uncertainties raised by geopolitics, Mr. Marcos has set the Philippines in a strategic position to balance its relations with other states. There will also be balancing when our country collaborates and cooperates with others in areas of mutual benefit, while also consulting and discussing areas of disagreement. All eyes will now be on how Mr. Marcos navigates our bilateral and multilateral relations given the issues faced by the past administration and the challenges in the current state of regional affairs. With national interest as the primordial guide of an independent foreign policy, the greater challenge for the Marcos Jr. … [Read more...] about National interest as driver of foreign policy

Moneycontrol Pro Weekender | Shaktikanta Das refuses to pivot

August 6, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das. (File photo) Dear Reader , A day before the monetary policy announcement, the yield on the 10-year bond fell sharply on a media report that the MPC would signal a pause after Friday’s hike. Thankfully, the MPC held firm, refusing to oblige the bond markets. Not only did it increase the repo rate by 50 basis points, but also the MPC signalled more rate hikes in future by refusing to tone down its ‘withdrawal of accommodation’ stance. Much is being made of the fact that the policy rate is now at the pre-pandemic level. At 5.4 percent, the repo rate is now back to where it was in September 2019. But that is no big deal. GDP growth was a measly 3.7 percent in 2019-20 compared to RBI’s projection of 7.2 percent in 2022-23; retail inflation was a much lower 4.8 percent in 2019-20, compared to a projected 6.7 percent for 2022-23; the current account deficit was a comfortable 0.9 percent of GDP in 2019-20 as against projections of around 3 percent … [Read more...] about Moneycontrol Pro Weekender | Shaktikanta Das refuses to pivot
