Today’s top design innovators have it all wrong. Here’s how to think bigger

May 17, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Charles Eames was once asked to define the boundaries of design. “What are the boundaries of problems?” he replied. That was more than 50 years ago. The impact of design has only grown. As the boundaries of problems have expanded, so has design. We believe it must expand even more in the years to come. advertisement advertisement The problems facing business and, indeed, humanity are becoming even more intractable, intertwined, and complex. The global population will be nearly 10 billion by midcentury. Cities will house some 2.5 billion people by 2050, making them more crowded and clogged. Meanwhile, the global demand for everyday goods, housing, and transportation is rising—requiring material resources that we don’t have and squeezing our planet’s ecosystems. Mass migrations, booming income inequality, raging pandemics, and the impact of AI and automation add dramatically to the challenges we face. The world is screaming out for new solutions to … [Read more...] about Today’s top design innovators have it all wrong. Here’s how to think bigger

Anthem Just Paid $54B To Buy Cigna. No One Knows What Will Happen Next.

July 24, 2015 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Anthem and Cigna on Friday morning announced a historic $54 billion merger that would make the new, combined company the largest health insurer in the country, by total customers. The deal's size is especially notable. (It's the largest-ever merger in the insurance industry). And the timing is remarkable. Just three weeks ago — to the day — rival insurers Aetna and Humana announced their own mega-merger , a $37 billion deal. If both deals get federal approval, America's Big Five health insurers will be winnowed to a Huge Three. So what happens next? And what will it mean for consumers? Anyone who says he knows those answers isn't worth trusting: America's health care system is in uncharted waters. First, there are real questions over whether either or both mergers will receive federal approval. The Department of Justice was already scrutinizing the Aetna-Humana deal — which now … [Read more...] about Anthem Just Paid $54B To Buy Cigna. No One Knows What Will Happen Next.

Greedy Pharma CEO Cancels 5,000% Price Hike — But He Didn’t Fix The Real Problem

September 22, 2015 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin America is outraged — outraged! — that Turing Pharmaceuticals hiked the cost of a drug called Daraprim by 5,000% last month. (The drug is used to fight infections in patients suffering from AIDS and other conditions.) What took everyone so long? Turing CEO Martin Shkreli is a repeat moral offender. He pulled off similar price hikes at his previous company, before getting fired and sued for $65 million. Martin Shkreli, the CEO of Turing, says the company will cancel its planned 5,000% price hike to a ... [+] drug used to treat infections in AIDS patients. (Paul Taggart/Bloomberg.) But there's a much bigger problem than Shkreli here: The skyrocketing cost of generic drugs. It's nothing new. And it hadn't gotten much attention until this week, partly because most pharma companies aren't run by evil executives who happily explain they're making a profit by over-charging AIDS patients. Here's an … [Read more...] about Greedy Pharma CEO Cancels 5,000% Price Hike — But He Didn’t Fix The Real Problem

As Musk tweets, advisers plug away to keep Twitter deal on track

May 18, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A NEW YORK (May 18): In public, Elon Musk’s erratic tweets have sent Twitter Inc’s shares flailing, as traders bet that the billionaire is preparing to walk away from or re-negotiate his US$44 billion takeover of the social-media company. Behind the scenes, it’s more like business as usual, as advisers on both sides plug away at the day-to-day work of closing a megadeal. One potential sign that the deal is still on track: the 139-page filing that hit early Tuesday, detailing how the offer came together and Twitter’s rationale for accepting it. That document was the result of weeks of coordinated work by both Musk and Twitter’s teams, according to people familiar with the matter. Musk himself signed off on the final version — complete with a deal price of US$54.20 a share — before it was filed, the people said. The situation is similar at the banks that promised to finance the transaction, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the details are … [Read more...] about As Musk tweets, advisers plug away to keep Twitter deal on track

See the cutting-edge tech turning government buildings into lean, green machines

May 17, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

The federal government has a long slog ahead, and it has nothing to do with politics. advertisement advertisement The Biden administration has set a series of ambitious energy and carbon emissions goals, including using energy that is 100% free of greenhouse gas pollution by 2030 , purchasing only non-gas-powered vehicles by 2035 , and producing net zero carbon emissions from federal buildings by 2045 . With a portfolio of more than 300,000 buildings and a fleet of 600,000 cars and trucks , meeting these goals will require a lot of new technology—and soon. The U.S. General Services Administration is on the hunt for that zero-emission, energy-saving technology, and has just announced the latest batch of novel tools and building materials that may help the government meet its goals. Through its Green Proving Ground program , the GSA is using some of the buildings in its portfolio to evaluate these technologies, utilizing real-world conditions … [Read more...] about See the cutting-edge tech turning government buildings into lean, green machines

Exactly how to think about every skill you’ve ever built and showcase it in a job search

May 17, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

What does it take to be a successful candidate? A college degree? Won’t hurt. Prior job-related experience? Still a big talent pool to beat there. Not too long ago, hiring managers placed a precedent on soft skills when hiring talent. In fact, a 2019 study found that 92% of talent professionals and hiring managers agree that candidates with strong soft skills are increasingly important. Before this, employers focused primarily on a candidate’s ability to contribute hard skills such as how well they can write, code, use Microsoft Suite, etc. advertisement advertisement Now employers and hiring managers are looking for well-rounded candidates. Not only do they want the candidate to be an excellent accountant, but they also want that individual to demonstrate solid communications skills. Furthermore, after surviving a pandemic, employers are eager to hear about a candidate’s life and career skills, among other transferable skills. What are … [Read more...] about Exactly how to think about every skill you’ve ever built and showcase it in a job search

Steve Jobs didn’t want first iPhone to have a SIM slot, reveals iPod inventor

May 17, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Apple’s visionary co-founder Steve Jobs wanted the first iPhone to not have a SIM slot, iPod inventor Tony Fadell revealed in a recent interview. Fadell , while discussing his book Build: An Unorthodox Guide to Making Things Worth Making with journalist Joanna Stern, said that Jobs wanted Apple to use CDMA technology for connections with cell towers. “We don’t need a hole in this (iPhone),” Fadell quoted Steve Jobs as saying. “Verizon (a wireless carrier company) does not have SIM cards, why do we need a SIM card? We are not going to have SIM cards on our phones.” Fadell recalled telling jobs that the idea would not work. “We had to bring him all the cell phone data. Almost 95 percent of all the phones at that time (in 2007) had SIM slots. No one had the technology for eSIM at that time. It took 12 to 13 years to get there.” Fadella added that when working with a highly-opinionated person, one has to be certain to get data to oppose them.
