Photo supplied US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin will pay an official visit to Thailand in June, a source at the Thai Defence Ministry revealed yesterday. Gen Austin is set to arrive next month for his first visit to the kingdom since being appointed last year, although the dates have yet to be finalised. Observers expect he will discuss ideas about improving the Thai armed forces, weaponry and defence industry, the source said. He met Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha in Washington, DC on May 12 during the Asean-US Summit. Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said Gen Prayut and Gen Austin discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation through the capacities of the armed forces, military education and joint military exercises. - A + A (May 17): President Joe Biden will launch a long-awaited economic initiative for increasing US involvement in Asia in the coming days during his trip to the region, according to one of the cabinet officials leading the initiative. The US and its partners will kick off the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework when Biden visits Japan on a May 20-24 trip that also will take him to South Korea, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said. The Commerce Department is leading negotiation of pillars of the framework focused on supply-chain resilience; clean energy, decarbonization and infrastructure; and taxation and anti-corruption. The US Trade Representative’s office is leading the work on fair and resilient trade.
