Thousands of ageing solar panels sited throughout China could trigger an environmental crisis over the next two decades, according to industry experts. China has more solar power plants than any other country, operating roughly twice as many solar panels as the U.S. with no plans on how to dispose of the old panels that break down. “It will explode with full force in two or three decades and wreck the environment, if the estimate is correct,” Tian Min, general manager of a Chinese recycling company, told The South China Morning Post . “This is a huge amount of waste and they are not easy to recycle.” There could be 20 million metric tons of solar panel waste, or 2,000 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower, by 2050 according to Lu Fang, the secretary general of solar power at the China Renewable Energy Society. Solar panels use hazardous materials, like sulfuric acid and phosphine gas, in the manufacturing process that makes them hard to recycle. Solar panels also have … [Read more...] about Old Solar Panels Causing An Environmental Crisis In China

The Wine Area In California With The Most Old Vines Makes Concentrated Reds But Also Unique White Wines
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin After a particularly grueling work trip of traveling through ten countries in ten days, Rodney Tipton told his wife that during the few minutes of downtime, he had the chance to listen to the song "Acquiesce" from singer K.D. Lang and that it inspired him to one day have a property and call it Acquiesce. His wife, Susan, asked where this property would be and he replied, "I don't know, but we'll be surrounded by land, watch the sunrise and sunset and we'll be very happy there." Susan and Rodney had paid more than their fair share of dues after several years of working in the corporate world and raising three boys while having to relocate to five different states. They lived in Europe for a time and Susan fell in love with white Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine, although Châteauneuf-du-Pape has always been known for their red wines. And so, she thought their Acquiesce dream of finding a piece of paradise could also include growing … [Read more...] about The Wine Area In California With The Most Old Vines Makes Concentrated Reds But Also Unique White Wines
Russian Jets Are Flying So Low To Dodge Ukrainian Air-Defenses That They’re Running Into The Ground
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Desperate to avoid surface-to-air missiles in the lethal air space over Ukraine, Russian and Ukrainian pilots have revived a classic tactic—flying really, really low. But the same low flying that helps pilots to dodge enemy air-defenses also exposes them to a separate risk: collisions with the terrain. In just the past week or so, the Russian air force has lost two Su-25 attack planes, and at least one pilot, in crashes during low-level flights to or from the war zone. The sky over Ukraine—in particular, eastern Ukraine where the fighting is the most intensive—is some of the most dangerous in the world for crews on both sides of the conflict. In four months of warfare, the Ukrainian and Russian air forces have written off around a fifth of their deployed fixed-wing aircraft, as well as many helicopters. Ukraine has lost 39 manned aircraft that independent analysts can confirm; Russia has lost 81. It’s … [Read more...] about Russian Jets Are Flying So Low To Dodge Ukrainian Air-Defenses That They’re Running Into The Ground
Avalanche prepares for second chance to hoist the Stanley Cup — this time in Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. — It was another maintenance morning for a handful of Avalanche forwards on Sunday at Amalie Arena. Gabe Landeskog, Nazem Kadri, Valeri Nichushkin and Andre Burakovsky each skipped the skate ahead of Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Colorado coach Jared Bednar said he’s hopeful all four banged-up forwards will be available to play as the club prepares for its second consecutive chance to win the Stanley Cup. Landeskog has had an ailment that has prevented him from participating in morning skates throughout the postseason. Kadri is hoping to play in his third straight game after returning from a broken thumb. Nichushkin sustained a lower-body injury in Friday’s Game 5. And Burakovsky has missed the last three games with a hand/wrist injury. The Avs, who failed to close out the series in a 3-2 loss on Friday at Ball Arena, are 8-1 on the road this postseason and have won their three previous series outside Denver. “Our team is … [Read more...] about Avalanche prepares for second chance to hoist the Stanley Cup — this time in Tampa
Meralco rates down for the fifth straight month
The Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) announced today the fifth consecutive month of lower power rates, as overall electricity rates for a typical household consuming 200kWh decreased to P9.0414 per kWh this September from last month’s P9.5674 per kWh. The downward adjustment of P0.5260 per kWh will mean a decrease of around P105 in the typical household’s total bill. The fifth straight month of electricity rate decrease represents a total downward adjustment of almost P1.52 per kWh since April 2019. Lower WESM charges lead to overall generation charge decrease From P4.9620 per kWh last month, generation charge for September went down to P4.5191 per kWh, a decrease of P0.4429 per kWh. The generation charge decrease is primarily due to lower charges from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM). WESM charges decreased by P3.6503 per kWh mainly due to improved supply conditions in the Luzon grid. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) did … [Read more...] about Meralco rates down for the fifth straight month
Why a bumper cherry crop in Kashmir is bringing cheer to apple orchard owners
According to an official in J&K's horticulture department, cherries are being cultivated on around 2,800 hectares in the region, which yields an annual turnover of Rs 130-150 crore. (Photo by Irfan Amin Malik) Apple is considered a cash crop in Kashmir but the bumper cherry harvest this year has caused fruit growers to think beyond apples. Apple growers in Kashmir are ecstatic to see bumper cherry crop in their apple orchards, at a time when apple harvesting is still four months away. Sayar Ahmad, a fruit grower from south Kashmir’s Shopian, said that cherry production this year was 50 times more than previous year. “Apples no doubt fetch us around Rs 10-15 lakh of yearly income but cherry provides mid-year income to the growers,” said 30-year-old Ahmad. In Kashmir, apple growers plant cherry, apricot and plum trees in their orchards to produce multiple fruit varieties. Ahmad added that earlier fruit growers would take cherries home and never thought of exporting the … [Read more...] about Why a bumper cherry crop in Kashmir is bringing cheer to apple orchard owners
Thailand becomes 1st Asian country to legalise marijuana for medicinal use
(Representational image) Thailand relaxed its cannabis laws Thursday, with users permitted to possess and grow the plant -- albeit under complicated new guidelines. The change comes after Thailand's landmark 2018 legalisation of medicinal cannabis -- the first such move by a country in Southeast Asia, where anti-drugs laws are notoriously harsh. The kingdom's public health ministry announced in February that marijuana would be removed from its banned narcotics list, and the rules came into effect on Thursday. Activists welcomed the development and Bangkok cannabis shop Highland Cafe was doing a brisk trade in buds on Thursday. "It's a dream come true," said co-owner Rattapon Sanrak. Close "We've been fighting for it (legalisation) for about 10 years," the 35-year-old said. Thailand has previously taken a tough stance on drugs, with people found with cannabis on them facing up to 10 years in prison and a hefty fine. But some warned against lighting up … [Read more...] about Thailand becomes 1st Asian country to legalise marijuana for medicinal use
My Family and Other Globalizers | The Tao of the Jigsaw
In life, as in a puzzle, you sometimes feel that a piece is missing. It rarely is. (Representational image: Ross Sneddon via Unsplash) Note to readers: My Family and Other Globalizers is a weekly parenting column on bringing up global citizens. The COVID pandemic was a globally unique moment in how it altered our ways of working, but also parenting. School is to most parents, the equivalent of a fairy godmother who transforms the Cinderella-work of childcare into the princess-like luxury of time for oneself to work, or vacuum, or, gasp, even read a novel. For many parents around the world, the pandemic took away that fairy godmother and replaced her with the wicked stepmother of home-schooling. If someone had told me in the days before coronavirus became a standard part of our daily lexicon, that I would have to deal with my children 24x7, while simultaneously working from the same home that was also now occupied by my spouse and his constant Zoom-hum of conference … [Read more...] about My Family and Other Globalizers | The Tao of the Jigsaw
Russia steps up missile strikes on Ukraine as G7 leaders gather
- A + A KYIV/POKROVSK, Ukraine (June 27): Russian missiles struck an apartment block and close to a kindergarten in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Sunday, in strikes U.S. President Joe Biden condemned as "barbarism" as world leaders gathered in Europe to discuss further sanctions against Moscow. Up to four explosions shook central Kyiv in the early hours, in the first such attack on the city in weeks. "The Russians hit Kyiv again. Missiles damaged an apartment building and a kindergarten," said Andriy Yermak, head of the president's administration. A Reuters photographer saw a large blast crater near a playground in a kindergarten that had smashed windows. Deputy Mayor Mykola Povoroznyk said one person was killed and six wounded. He said explosions heard later in other parts if Kyiv were air defences destroying further incoming missiles. Russia has stepped up air strikes on Ukraine this weekend, which has also seen the fall of a strategic eastern city to … [Read more...] about Russia steps up missile strikes on Ukraine as G7 leaders gather
