Calculation of India’s Covid deaths complex, modelling changes can affect numbers: Ex-ICMR Scientist
Representative image (Source: Reuters) The calculation of deaths due to Covid-19 in India is “quite complex” and there are “no definite answers”, former Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) scientist Dr Raman Gangakhedkar told News18.com, responding to the latest data released by the World Health Organization (WHO), which claims that Covid could have killed as many as 47.4 lakh people in India in 2020-21. The figure, disputed by the Indian government, is nearly 10 times the country’s official Covid death toll of 4.81 lakh at the end of 2021. The epidemiologist, who was the face of the country’s apex medical research agency during government briefings on Covid-19 last year, said when a modelling exercise is done, certain assumptions have to be used when data is not available. “India is a large country with a population over 134 crore. Here, health infrastructure, quality and timelines of data reporting vary between states. Use of one assumption for all states may not … [Read more...] about Calculation of India’s Covid deaths complex, modelling changes can affect numbers: Ex-ICMR Scientist

Tesla Is Hedging Its Global EV Supply Chain Bets on Indonesia and India
Bloomberg From India to Indonesia, Elon Musk is scouting out sites to make more Teslas for global roads. With the world mired in supply chain chaos, access to materials matters most. He’s got it right. After lobbying against India’s tight policies around manufacturing and prohibitive import duties, Musk is headed to meet Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo and visit several areas across the country, which is also the top producer of nickel, a key metal for batteries. That’s an astute bet — for Tesla and Indonesia. And a missed opportunity for New Delhi. To meet ambitious electric vehicle targets, Indonesia has drawn in several battery and car manufacturers in recent months with a variety of incentives. Government ministers say they hope to have investment across the supply chain. With a friendly policy bolstering the country’s EV goals, manufacturers have started committing billions of dollars. LG Energy Solution, along with other companies, is investing about $9 billion to set … [Read more...] about Tesla Is Hedging Its Global EV Supply Chain Bets on Indonesia and India
Spotlight on dating apps for role in adding to HIV-AIDS burden in India
The top AIDS research institute in India is set to undertake a first-ever study to assess the role of dating apps such as Tinder and OkCupid, among others, in contributing to the HIV and AIDS burden in the country. In the West, such studies have established that dating apps may be leading to a rise in HIV cases among adolescents, but no empirical evidence is available from India yet on whether there is a change in risk behaviour following the use of such dating apps. Scientists at the National AIDS Research Institute (NARI) under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that their discussion with various stakeholders suggested that a large number of men having sex with men and female sex workers may have shifted to dating apps. “Therefore, we thought this would be an important study to understand the correlation between dating apps and AIDS in India in the changing social scenario that is heavily dependent on technology, mobile phones and internet,” said a senior … [Read more...] about Spotlight on dating apps for role in adding to HIV-AIDS burden in India

A patient suffering from the COVID-19 receives treatment inside the emergency ward at Holy Family hospital in New Delhi. (Representative image: Reuters) After a study suggested that about half of those admitted to hospitals due to COVID-19 suffer from one or more symptoms two years after the infection, health experts have called for more research and data collection for assessing the impact of post-COVID sequelae in India. In one of the longest follow-up studies by The Lancet medical journal, the researchers have highlighted that COVID-19 survivors had a remarkably lower health status than the general population after two years. This appears to be the case in India too, with the chairman of Sir Gangaram Hospital Delhi, Dr DS Rana, saying that he and other doctors at the hospital have been treating patients with long COVID reporting diseases involving ailments of the kidney, heart and lung for a longer period of time. But, he added, more studies are needed. “We need more … [Read more...] about As Lancet flags long COVID concerns, experts in India call for more data and research
