(Representative Image: AP) India exported 370,000 tonnes of wheat under the government-to-government (G2G) mechanism to countries that require priority access to grains as of early August. However, requests for Indian wheat from many other countries remain pending. The government had halted private wheat exports with immediate effect on May 13. Subsequently, it restricted exports of wheat flour and other related products such as maida, rava (semolina), wholemeal atta, and resultant atta. The decisions came amid widespread loss of yield due to abnormal heat waves in the major wheat-growing states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Large quantities of the crop shrivelled due to the heat and, in certain cases, had become unfit for human consumption. However, the government kept open the option to export wheat as a tool of economic diplomacy. Subsequently, India permitted the grain to be bilaterally exported to other nations at their request in order to … [Read more...] about India exported 3.7 lakh tonnes of wheat through government route

India only G20 country ‘on track’ to meeting 2C target of 2015 Paris Agreement
Representative image India is the only country among G20 nations which is “on track” to meeting its 2C goal as promised in the 2015 Paris Agreement, a global coalition report showed on November 18. Ajay Mathur, Director - The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), told The Times of India that India has become “an example” for others to “move the world to a 2-degree C warming future” adding that the country met its requirements through “large scale adoption of renewable electricity.” “(India’s) experience of enabling growth in the power, transport and industry sectors to be based on zero-carbon-emissions technologies would have huge replicative value in other G20 countries,” he felt. The Climate Transparency Report 2020, which is a coalition of 14 global think tanks including India’s TERI, showed the top three emitters – United States, European Union and China are far from their required trajectory. China in fact was found to be “highly incompatible” with the 2C warming … [Read more...] about India only G20 country ‘on track’ to meeting 2C target of 2015 Paris Agreement
Thailand tourism: India No.1 country sending tourists
The government has been extremely focused on tourism numbers and recovery in the post-pandemic world and the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration reported that 2.2 million visitors have entered Thailand so far this year, over 10% of them from India. That equates to 11.27% of the 2,214,132 people who have come to Thailand so far this year. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has proposed increasing Indian travel by lengthening visas on arrival from 15 days to 45 days and tourist visas from 30 days to 45 days as well. The majority of tourists in Phuket have been coming from India, and now Chiang Mai has been courting these Indian tourists as the Chinese tourists they traditionally welcome are still limited in travel. The lack of Chinese tourism is hitting all of Thailand as China … [Read more...] about Thailand tourism: India No.1 country sending tourists

Meanwhile, exports in July were "almost static" compared to last year, Subrahmanyam said at a briefing, coming in at $35.24 billion. This has put pressure on the rupee's exchange rate, which has hit multiple all-time lows against the US dollar over the last few weeks and crossed the … [Read more...] about Trade deficit scales record high of $31 billion in July, exports fall 12% over last month
Bibek Debroy writes: India’s economy is better placed than its peers, other economies around the world
Representative image Impostor syndrome seems to be more common than actually thought, though at a collective level. People may often feel that the groups they are affiliated with may be underperforming in comparison to other groups. Although this self-critical approach may work in certain cases, it may also overlook the positives, and decrease the morale of those affiliated with the group. Many in India seem to have a collective/national-level impostor syndrome. While the Indian economy is much better placed than its peers in the emerging markets, and other economies, the government is being criticised on the economic front. The criticism comes when the fundamentals of the Indian economy are robust, despite the exogenous shocks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions, monetary policy tightening by the US Federal Reserve, the Ukraine-Russia conflict, and inflated crude oil prices. India's macroeconomic health remains robust despite external pressures, and ongoing … [Read more...] about Bibek Debroy writes: India’s economy is better placed than its peers, other economies around the world
