TOT launches B0.50-a-minute service
PHUKET: The Telephone Organization of Thailand (TOT) has raised the bar in its battle against fixed-line and mobile phone rivals by chopping prices for those using its Y-tel 1234 service. It is now offering long-distance calls within Thailand for as little as 50 satang a minute during August and September. The 50-satang charge applies on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and on weekdays between 10 pm and 7 am. At other times the charge for using the service is 1 baht a minute. To use the service, callers must first dial 1234, then the area code and number they wish to reach. For a number in Bangkok, for example, callers should dial 1234-0-29876543. Calling into Phuket from outside, they should dial 1234-0-76123456. To call a mobile phone the format is similar: 1234-0-19540000 Only those calling from a TOT line may take advantage of the deep discounts. Thai Telephone & Telegraph (TT&T) matched TOT’s earlier version of the 1234 system, but has yet to drop its prices to the … [Read more...] about TOT launches B0.50-a-minute service
Mega Backdoor Roth 401(k) Conversion: Overview and FAQ
What Is a Mega Backdoor Roth 401(k) Conversion? A mega backdoor Roth 401(k) conversion is a tax-shelter strategy available to employees whose employer-sponsored 401(k) retirement plans allow them to make substantial after-tax contributions in addition to their pretax deferrals and to transfer their contributions to an employer-designated Roth 401(k). The Build Back Better Act, H.R. 5376, passed by the House of Representatives on Nov. 19, 2021, contains provisions that, if enacted, would limit the ability of high-income taxpayers to accumulate extremely high-value balances in Roth 401(k)s and would eliminate backdoor Roth conversions for high-income taxpayers after Dec. 31, 2031. As of spring 2022, the Build Back Better Act remains stalled in the Senate, and these provisions may not come to pass, at least not in their current form. But mega backdoor Roth conversions remain an important issue—and a notable route to wealth for higher-income taxpayers. Key Takeaways H.R. … [Read more...] about Mega Backdoor Roth 401(k) Conversion: Overview and FAQ

Keep an Eye on These Coins The cryptocurrency market's recent momentum subsided a bit in the latest week as Bitcoin fell back to about $22,000. While that's an improvement from where the market was trading a few months ago, there may be a few more resistance points to break through before the market can enter a bull run . Still, there some crypto tokens are outperforming the market. This week, we examine SingularityNET (AGIX), Render Token (RNDR), MAGIC (MAGIC), Shiba Inu (SHIB), and The Graph (GRT). In selecting these assets, we have considered several factors, including positive technical developments, significant news events, and noticeable changes in price. Budget 2023 proposes to sharply increase the tax collected at source rate on money sent overseas under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme to 20 percent from 5 percent. Moneycontrol Pro Panorama | MPC plays it safe, more rate hikes coming?
The central bank's commentary has a hawkish undertone and suggests that more interest rate hikes cannot be ruled out. Dear Reader, The Panorama newsletter is sent to Moneycontrol Pro subscribers on market days. It offers easy access to stories published on Moneycontrol Pro and gives a little extra by setting out a context or an event or trend that investors should keep track of. The RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee met market expectations by increasing the repo rate by 25 basis points, although it left some prayers unanswered. The fond hope was that the MPC would take its cue from global central banks and announce a pause on rate increases. The consolation is that two of the six MPC members didn’t want to raise rates. Nevertheless, the central bank's commentary has a hawkish undertone and suggests that more interest rate hikes cannot be ruled out. This is against what some global central banks have said. The Bank of Canada became the first central bank in a G10 … [Read more...] about Moneycontrol Pro Panorama | MPC plays it safe, more rate hikes coming?
Budget 2023: Marginal hike in healthcare allocation, key schemes see cuts
India’s budget for healthcare saw a marginal increase of 13 percent in Budget 2023-24 from Rs 79,145 crore in 2022-23 to Rs 89,155 crore in 2023-24. Over the last five years of the Modi government, the sector has seen a 27 percent rise in allocations from Rs 62,659 crore in FY20 to Rs 89,155 crore in 2023-24. However, schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission as well as the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana have seen lesser amounts being allocated to them in this budget. The allocation for one of the flagship schemes of the government — Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission, a pan-India health scheme for strengthening healthcare infrastructure — fell to Rs 645.8 crore from the previous budget estimate of Rs 978 crore. The utilisation of the fund has been even lower, with the revised FY23 estimate standing at Rs 281.6 crore. Why is an infringement of intellectual property acceptable but not royalty payments?
The disdain shown by a large majority of the population to intellectual property rights discourages innovation at the domestic level, motivates the innovators to immigrate to foreign shores and register their innovations there. (Representative image) The total apathy of common Indians towards the intellectual property rights (IPR) of the originators is appalling. The use of pirated software, photocopied books, spurious books sold on traffic signals and footpaths, unauthorised copies of branded clothes and so on is unapologetically common. Propriety and ethics are not taught in schools. It is common to see parents encouraging their wards to buy the “cheaper” alternative regardless of its legality and authenticity. Many cities have infamous “markets” for pirated software and duplicate merchandise. Driving out from Delhi NCR region to nearby Uttar Pradesh and Haryana towns, one comes across “Bhatura King”, a fast-food joint chain. The name and logo used by this chain are cannily … [Read more...] about Why is an infringement of intellectual property acceptable but not royalty payments?
How to make volatility your friend
There are many reasons for volatility of prices to deviate from business earnings. Maybe it is belief of a different macro environment. (Representative image) The term “volatility” finds unique use in Indian stock market lingo. I am not aware of any other market where “volatility” is so frequently referred to by market participants. In India, it stands for corrections/crashes many a time. Indian TV channels when describing markets on a day as having gone up or down (even a 50 point move in the Nifty) term them as “volatile” markets. However, volatility in its universal sense refers to a move away from trend –... … [Read more...] about How to make volatility your friend
