- A + A (Nov 29): Royal Bank of Canada agreed to buy HSBC Holdings Plc’s Canadian unit — the country’s seventh-largest bank —for C$13.5 billion (US$10 billion) in cash, expanding its roster of business clients and bulking up its retail presence on the West Coast as HSBC focuses on Asia. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin One of the Democratic Party’s long-running criticisms of President Donald Trump over the past four years has centered on allegations that his conduct of foreign policy often had the impact of alienating America’s allies. Incoming President Joe Biden now risks doing exactly that with his promise to immediately act to cancel the cross-border permit for the northern expansion of the Keystone XL Pipeline upon assuming office on Wednesday. Keystone XL has presented politicians in Washington, DC with a plum opportunity to play political football since the early days of the Obama/Biden Administration. Former President Obama and his officials spent the better part of 8 years currying favor with the leftwing anti-fossil fuels lobby by going to extraordinary lengths to constantly delay the project under specious reasoning that it would harm the environment. Meanwhile, President Trump was able to gain support with oil and gas industry … [Read more...] about To Kill A Pipeline: Canada Pushes Back On Biden Plan To Cancel Keystone XL

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The list of corporations that terminated sponsorship relationships with players who left the PGA Tour for the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit is a long one that includes Mastercard MA , Rocket Mortgage, Workday WDAY and KPMG. But ambassador defections stung the Royal Bank of Canada particularly hard. Back in June, team members Dustin Johnson and Graeme McDowell, two of their most high-profile players, announced they were playing in the breakaway league’s first event. The news broke just a couple weeks ahead of the RBC Canadian Open—one of two PGA Tour events where RBC serves as the title sponsor. Harold Varner III, who had been their community junior golf program brand ambassador, followed suit a couple months later. “We were certainly disappointed when we lost DJ, G-Mac and HVIII. They’ve all been just terrific ambassadors for RBC. But we also understand that they needed to make a decision for their own purposes … [Read more...] about In Wake Of LIV Departures, RBC Reloads With Trio Of The PGA Tour’s Brightest Lights
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The pushback from Canada I wrote about on Tuesday has apparently fallen on deaf ears for the incoming new administration, and President Joe Biden will likely move to cancel the cross-border permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline System . That move could effectively kill the project to complete the northern leg of the system which would facilitate the import of large volumes of heavy Canadian crude every day for refining in the United States. The question that too few, if any, in the news media will ask the new President is, why? Why would a President who likes to portray himself as a champion of the environment move to cancel a pipeline that has pledged to turn itself into America’s first all-renewable energy interstate/international pipeline system? Other than a simple raw exercise in political power designed to impress one of the Democratic Party’s most loyal and powerful interest groups, the move makes little sense. It … [Read more...] about Keystone XL Update: President Biden Plans To Axe America’s First All-Renewable Energy Pipeline

Democratic Virginia Rep. A. Donald McEachin died Monday at the age of 61, his office announced. First elected to Congress in 2016, McEachin had been suffering from colorectal cancer since 2013, Chief of Staff Tara Rountree said in a statement. McEachin won his bid for a fourth term in the November midterms, defeating Republican challenger Leon Benjamin by 27 points. “We are all devastated at the passing of our boss and friend, Congressman Donald McEachin. Valiantly, for years now, we have watched him fight and triumph over the secondary effects of his colorectal cancer from 2013. Tonight, he lost that battle, and the people of Virginia’s Fourth Congressional District lost a hero who always, always fought for them and put them first,” Rountree said. “Until a new representative is elected, our office will remain open and continue to serve our constituents. The family asks for privacy at this time. Arrangements will be announced over the next few days.” … [Read more...] about Congressman Donald McEachin Dead At 61
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It wasn’t all that long ago when the Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger and Brewers’ Christian Yelich duked it out for the NL MVP award. Yelich had the trophy in 2018 and was having an even better year in 2019 when his fractured kneecap gave the young Dodger the opening he needed to prevent a repeat. Those award-winning campaigns were massive - Yelich went .326-.402-.598 (164 Baseball Reference OPS+) in 2018, and Bellinger .305-.406-.629 (167) the following season. Plus, both were quite young (Yelich was 27, Bellinger 23 in their MVP campaigns) and appeared poised to be at the top of the charts for the foreseeable future. It hasn’t quite worked out that way, and now Bellinger is on the free agent market searching for a new employer while Yelich has gone from a bargain Brewer to a borderline albatross contract situation. Let’s peel a couple of layers back on both players and attempt to determine whether they can recover their peak … [Read more...] about Can Cody Bellinger And Christian Yelich Get Their Respective Grooves Back?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Hakim Ziyech , or “the wizard” as the Ajax fans dubbed him back when he was scoring goals in Netherlands’ Eredivisie, is on the verge of bidding farewell to English Premier League side Chelsea. Among the European soccer clubs that are courting the Moroccan winger are the Serie A reigning champions AC Milan, who are looking to strengthen their roster in the January transfer window . Ziyech, a left-footed player gifted with incredible technique, hasn’t been able to express all his potential at Chelsea, where he racked up 14 goals in 92 appearances over the last three seasons. In the 2022/23 campaign, Ziyech has only stepped on the field five times in the English Premier League due to strong competition within the Blues’ squad, as he currently ranks behind Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz and Conor Gallagher in manager Graham Potter’s hierarchy. Sitting on the bench is certainly … [Read more...] about Would Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech Be A Good Fit For Serie A Side AC Milan?
