5 Predictions For How The Trump Era Might Impact Tech Hiring

· May 16, 2017 ·

U.S. President Donald Trump says that he’s on a mission to put Americans first, but as an industry that has historically relied upon its ability to attract the best and brightest from around the world, technology leaders are concerned that some of his rhetoric might impose challenges on their international recruiting efforts. advertisement advertisement Though Trump’s executive orders banning immigrants from seven countries were ultimately blocked, the promised reforms to the H-1B visa program for international workers remains to be seen. His overall hostility to immigration may give tech workers from abroad reason to pause before bringing their talents to the U.S. A decrease in immigration could have a big impact on growth in the tech industry. More than half of all American startups that are valued at $1 billion or more were founded or cofounded by immigrants, according to a study by the National Foundation for American Policy, and the combined value of the … [Read more...] about 5 Predictions For How The Trump Era Might Impact Tech Hiring

Toronto doesn’t want to be Silicon Valley. It’s building something better

· June 3, 2019 ·

It’s a sunny Thursday afternoon in Toronto, and a group of international tourists and new immigrants are staring at me through the glass doors of the reception area of the mayor’s office. I try to ignore them as I prepare for my meeting with the city’s top official when one opens the door and asks me, in broken English, if she can go in and see the mayor. advertisement advertisement Midway through my poor attempt at explaining how I don’t have the power to grant her such permission, Mayor John Tory opens the door behind me, prompting cheers and camera flashes from the crowd. “I’m sorry I’m running late,” he says to me, “but I’ll need another minute.” Then he heads toward the group gathered in the hallway. It’s Newcomer Day in Toronto, an annual celebration that invites those seeking to or in the process of making Canada their home to experience the country’s cuisine, music, and culture, while … [Read more...] about Toronto doesn’t want to be Silicon Valley. The modeling industry is filled with exploitation—this labor activist is fighting back

· December 10, 2019 ·

In her two decades as a professional model—appearing in campaigns for designers such as Stella McCartney and Tommy Hilfiger—Sara Ziff has seen the industry’s glamorous side and its underbelly, which is rife with child labor, low wages, and sexual harassment. Model Alliance, the nonprofit she founded in 2012, advocates for fair labor standards and safer workplaces for models. Under Ziff, the alliance has pushed lawmakers in New York and California to protect underage models, partnered with researchers to study human trafficking and other issues, and launched a high-profile campaign—signed by close to 140 models—to get Victoria’s Secret to commit to safeguarding its models from sexual misconduct. Here, she talks about how modeling agencies have enabled the likes of Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein, and why the exploitation of models should concern us all. advertisement advertisement Fast Company: Modeling has always seemed so aspirational. … [Read more...] about The modeling industry is filled with exploitation—this labor activist is fighting back
