Photo by PR Phuket. Phuket taxi drivers are calling for authorities to get tough on illegal drivers. On Thursday, over 100 drivers protested about the issue at Phuket City Hall. The president of the Patong Taxi Operators Association, Thinnakorn Chommueang, said that local, legal taxi drivers on the island province were suffering, especially those operating through apps. He said… “Therefore would like to demand that the provincial governor issue a provincial order to government agencies to deal with illegal ‘black taxis,’ distinguishing cars that are allowed to operate through the application is proper.” Thinnakorn added that taxis legally operating through apps should be easily identifiable in the way that vehicles with green-coloured license plates are, The Phuket News reported. Hotel Report: Russians back, zero-baht backlash, crackdown on illegal hotels
PHUKET: Russian arrivals are back to pre-crisis level while the zero-baht tourism ban curbed Q4 growth, the newly released C9 Hotelworks ‘Phuket Hotel Market Update’ for February says. With total airport arrivals surpassing 7.5 million passengers, Phuket experienced a sharp year-on-year rise of 18 per cent, compared to 13 per cent the previous year. This is largely attributed to the resurgence of the Russian source market, which increased 51 per cent last year. The rebound was prompted by the strengthening of the ruble against the Thai baht and political volatility in the Middle East that shifted Russian tourists to the island during high season. Another notable source market is Mainland China, whose arrivals were substantially affected after a nationwide government’s crackdown on zero-baht tourism in September last year (story here ). The growth rate of Chinese visitors for 2016 was down from 35 per cent to 11 per cent. However, the impact from the new enforcement is expected … [Read more...] about Hotel Report: Russians back, zero-baht backlash, crackdown on illegal hotels
New Apple Leak Adds To iPhone 15 Price Fears
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Apple leaks claim that iPhone 15 Pro models are getting more expensive , and now a new leak breaking down iPhone 14 sales data may explain why. According to display analyst Ross Young, iPhone 14 sales are falling behind the iPhone 13. Apple confirmed this in its Q4 earnings call , citing supply chain constraints, but Young revealed something altogether more shocking: iPhone 14 Plus sales have collapsed. And this adds considerable weight to multiple leaks claiming Apple will shake up iPhone 15 pricing to fix this. Young, highly respected for his near-perfect track record, broke down display shipments for all iPhone 14 models in a graph (below). It shows Apple procuring a roughly equal number of displays for iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models ahead of their release in August. By October, iPhone 14 Plus orders had halved before dropping a further 80% in November, with orders … [Read more...] about New Apple Leak Adds To iPhone 15 Price Fears
The Job Market Is Defying Economic Gravity
The economy is slowing down and inflation is cooling, with no mass layoffs in sight—that’s not supposed to happen. Friday’s news that employers kicked hiring into high gear in January by adding 517,000 jobs came as a surprise for a number of reasons. Layoffs at Google ( GOOGL) and other tech companies have dominated headlines . Other parts of the economy have been slowing down , with a multitude of indicators flashing warning signs of a recession. The domino effect of a slow down usually causes a surge in the unemployment level, and economists had expected those headwinds to at least curb the pace of job gains. “It’s clearly the tale of two economies,” said Ryan Sweet, chief U.S. economist at Oxford Economics. “The labor market is extremely tight. It's very strong, but the rest of the economy is slowing down.” Those two things don’t usually go together, but the pandemic may have overturned the old rules. “Historical experience may prove to be misleading in 2023,” said … [Read more...] about The Job Market Is Defying Economic Gravity

Why the next decade is crucial for bird conservation in India
Indian vulture population in the country has declined, from 40 million to 19,000. (Photo by Shantanu Kuveskar via Wikimedia Commons) There was a time when the Great Indian Bustard (GIB) was in the running to become our National Bird. Its range extended all across western India - the Thar Desert and Deccan Plateau being its strongholds. Wildlife experts and enthusiasts recount spotting groups of up to 20 GIBs at a time in the dry grasslands. Rampant poaching, disturbance at breeding sites and loss of habitat have, however, reduced its numbers to 150 in the country (as of 2018). The critically endangered species could go extinct within 20 years, according to estimates by ornithologists. Unfortunately, it isn’t the only bird going the way of the Dodo. The fifth edition of the flagship science publication State of the World’s Birds, released last week, has declared that nearly half of the planet’s bird species are in decline. Painting a grim picture, it states that at least 187 … [Read more...] about Why the next decade is crucial for bird conservation in India

Foreign portfolio investors in India to pay higher tax on debt securities: official
Foreign portfolio investors will lose a preferential tax rate on interest from Indian government securities and corporate and foreign currency bonds, a senior tax official said on Saturday. Foreign portfolio investors have been enjoying a lower 5% tax on interest earned on bonds since 2013, making investments in the country more attractive. Ending this treatment would require them to pay a 20% tax on interest income from July 1. "It has not been extended," Central Board of Direct Taxes chairman Nitin Gupta told Reuters. "Our view point is that it was a revenue foregone by the government "We have certain tax treaty with any jurisdiction which permits the Indian government to deduct tax at a certain rate. We had foregone that right. It was helping the other government, and the other jurisdictions," Gupta said in an interview.
